This is UNICEF television.
This nine year old girl likes to play board
games and she plays with Michel almost
every day. He sees their games as a useful
form of therapy.
In her village of Lubunga, she was pulled of
the road and raped. After 2 months in
hospital, she has recovered physically, but
is now afraid of most adults.
Children and women have borne the brunt
of the war in the Democratic Republic of
Congo. In the East, constant movement
and upheaval has left them perpetual
victims. In places where the scars remain,
but the fighting has ended, rape is still a
weapon.

“Sexual violence has become a daily
phenomenon here in Lubunga. We get wind
of cases every day. Sometimes two,
sometimes three…”
Based on reports of rape, the majority of
the culprits here are military men. There is
a base hidden behind the forests, where
5,000 militia and government soldiers are
being integrated. It is the army that still
targets the population.

Script
La petite fille de neuf ans aime jouer à des jeux
de sociétés. Elle joue avec Michel presque tous
les jours.
Il considère leurs jeux comme une forme de
thérapie.
Elle a été violée dans son village. Après avoir
passé deux mois à l’hôpital, elle est désormais
guérie de ses blessures, mais elle a toujours peur
des adultes.
Les enfants et les femmes ont été les plus
touchés par cette guerre en République
Démocratique du Congo. Dans l’est du pays, les
déplacements constants de populations ont fait
des femmes de perpétuelles victimes.

Il y a ici une caserne, cachée dans la forêt, où
cinq mille miliciens et soldats gouvernementaux
se trouvent. C’est l’armée qui continue à s’en
prendre à la population.
Cette fille de douze ans est intelligente et
extravertie, et voudrait devenir professeur.
Elle a vécu une expérience qui arrive trop souvent
aux jeunes filles.
SOUNDBITE Selina, 12 ans
« J’étais partie chercher de l’eau et j’avais
presque fini lorsque j’ai senti quelqu’un arriver
derrière moi. J’ai vu que c’était quelqu’un en
uniforme militaire. Il a pris une pierre, me l’a mise
dans la bouche et m’a emportée dans les
buissons. Il m’a frappée au visage, m’a pris à la
gorge et puis il m’a violée. »
Il reste peu de place pour l’espoir. Cependant, les
enfants se rassemblent pour parler du fléau que
sont le viol et la violence ; et c’est à de réagir pour
aider la génération affectée.
