We talked about your baccalauréat - Don`t hesitate to contact me mail
Welcome to Mrs Monnier’s English class. I wish you all the best for this new school year!
☺
We talked about your baccalauréat exam and the 4 notions you’ll have to study this year:
-mythes et héros (myths and heroes)
-espaces et échanges (space and reciprocities/exchanges)
-lieux et formes de pouvoir (places and forms of power)
-l’idée de progrès (the idea of progress)
We started with SPACE AND EXCHANGES
SPACE AND EXCHANGE : our world has never seemed smaller;
POSITIVE REASONS for
travelling :
We travel to work/ to study
Many exchanges : of goods (biens ) , of
people, of cultures…)
To go on a trip= journey/ to go
on holiday
Social network: easy to communicate
For fun : because we like it
TODAY IT IS EASY TO TRAVEL (Quicker
means of transportation )
To go on a school exchange
To discover new cultures, new
ways of life
To practice foreign languages
NEGATIVE REASONS:
We are sometimes forced to
change jobs
Some people must escape
poverty or persecutions
Some travel beause there is a
war in their country
Homework :fill in your identity form and learn lesson + voc ( down to “location”)
See you !!
Wednesday September 18th COURS POUR LES ABSENTS
We started with a little game to revise your vocabulary then you did a recap of the previous lesson.
We practiced for the oral understanding exam (entrainement à la CO) : you listened to a recording
and had to say all you could understand : we then watched the video: it was an extract from the film
THE SPANISH INN (or SPANISH FLAT = auberge espagnole)
HERE IS WHAT WE WROTE IN THE LESSON
SPACE AND EXCHANGE
THE QUESTION RAISED :(la problématique) = WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS OF TRAVELLING AROUND
THE WORLD WHEN YOU ARE A STUDENT?
Document 1 : THE SPANISH FLAT (pour voir le trailer du film aller dans TERM STMG TOPICS)
It is about a French student –Xavier- who is looking for (cherche ) a flat and who would like to rent a
flat/ to share a flat. He is interviewed by other students (an English girl/ a Spanish girl/ an Italian
boy/ a Danish boy/ a German boy ) : they want to know him better to see if he can become their
flatmate ( = colocataire)
The scene takes place in Spain in Barcelona; Xavier studies in Spain (he studies economy) thanks to (
grace à ) the Erasmus programme
ERASMUS?
European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students
ERASMUS = it is a programme for European students to help them study in another country
European region action scheme for the mobility of university students
IT STARTED IN 1987
33 COUNTRIES PARTICIPATE IN THE EXCHANGE
CONDITIONS TO PARTICIPATE
-
You must finish your first year in a French university
-
You must study in a European country for minimum 3 months
You don’t need to pay extra tuition fees (you pay in France only)
Your degree = diploma is recognized in France
The Erasmus social network helps you to find an accomodation
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF FLAT SHARING?
-
-
It is less expensive =cheaper than renting a flat alone
It’s more convivial/ communal atmosphere/ it enables you to (cela vous permet de ) make
new friends You don’t feel lonely and miserable
It’s easier when you arrive abroad/ in a foreign country: you can meet people it allows you
to (cela vous permet de ) discover the place with someone who knows it already/ easier to
find your way through the town and avoid tourist traps (éviter les pièges à tourists)/ other
room mates can show the place around and act as guides
You can share the rent (le loyer), the food but also the household chores ! (les tâches
ménagères)

COMPREHENSION ORALE; voice la CORRECTION:
WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS OF TRAVELLING AROUND THE WORLD WHEN YOU ARE A STUDENT?
COUCH SURFING.com (practicing for the oral comprehension exam)
Todd: So, Jonathan, I thought we would talk a bit about your travels and this new
thing called couch surfing. Can you explain what couch surfing is?
Jonathan: Couch surfing is a fairly new website, and what it does is it
__allows___________ travelers from different parts of the world _______to meet
people___________ in the destinations they're going to. People offer a
__couch_______in their home or perhaps __space on their floor______________,
and in return you’re excopected in your own hometown to offer the same kind of
things to people who might ____visit you_________.
Todd: So basically, people __sign up = register_____________, and if they find
somebody that has, you know, a _couch_________ in some city, they can go and
stay with that person _for free__________?
Jonathan: Yes, it is ____for free______, but people aren't expected to
___abuse__________it. It's not for people who are _____cheap_________and want
to ______save money_____________. It is for people who are like-minded and want
to perhaps __share____________ their experiences and meet someone from the
local ____culture_________. You're not going to have a good experience if you show
up and just expect to freeload ( to take advantage of the system)
Todd: What about security? I mean aren’t people a little bit ___worried_________
about safety and security with this?
Jonathan: I think some people do ___worry_________ but couch surfing has a
system where you can vouch for people that you have stayed with. You can leave
references and you can become verified as a host or a couch surfer by registering
through the system. So if there's someone that you're a little bit
____suspicious______ of, you don't need to offer them a couch. It's not necessary.
HOW DOES THE WEBSITE WORK?
1- You register = sign up to offer a couch or to find a couch
2- You email the host and start chatting
3- You meet the host at his place , you can sleep at his place and visit the town
4- The host can vouch you* ( leave a comment on you and say if you are a good couch
surfer) and you can vouch the host (say if your stay was good or not) : you leave
comments and references on the website so it is safe; the website is not for freeloaders = people who only want to save money (ce n’est pas pour les “profiteurs”)
*To vouch = se porter garant : attester de votre fiabilité
Homework→ FOR FRIDAY
LEARN THE LESSON AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS :
1- What are the advantages of couchsurfing for the hosts? For the guests?
2- Would you like to register on this website?
ATTENTION CETTE PARTIE SUR COUCHSURFING EST LA DERNIERE DU THEME
Friday Ocotber 18th
ADVANTAGES FOR THE HOSTS
They can meet people from all over the world
without moving from their homes
They can learn foreign languages without
travelling
They can have the same service in return; if they
want to travel they can travel for free in return
ADVANTAGES FOR THE GUESTS
They can have a free couch
A free kitchen,A free car
The hosts can show them around : it enables
travelers to avoid tourist traps
ADVANTAGES FOR THE HOSTS AND THE GUESTS:
Thanks to couch surfing you learn to trust Ø= have confidence in other
people; you become less prejudiced = less biased = more open-minded
Ex : in the text TAKE THE COUCH Vincent learnt that all Americans are not as
the media depict them : all of them don’t carry guns !!
You are not afraid of foreigners: you understand their culture better
Couch surfing is a good ways of making friends : you can start a life long

EVERY DAY THREAT
A threat = a menace
To threaten = to menace
The Taliban threatened to throw acid at girls’s
faces if they went to school
They threatened to turn schools into religious
seminaries
They beheadED people
She lived in a war zone

HOW TO WRITE A DIARY
●Start with the date ex : for Malala’s diary : Wednesday, October 26th 2009
●Write about your experience : what happened to you/ how you feel. BE CAREFUL: THE
TENSES (temps) YOU USE DEPEND ON WHEN YOU WRITE AND WHAT YOU REFER TO
Exemples of tenses you can use :
-
TODAY, I have seen my friends/ I haven’t been to school PRESENT PERFECT (have +participle
passé). On utilise le PRESENT PERFECT car la journée n’est pas encore finie
-
THIS MORNING, I went /played/ I didn’t go to school PRETERIT (Si on est le soir : le matin est
terminé , on utilise le passé)
-
TONIGHT , I feel , I am ….PRESENT SIMPLE ou I am writing this diary PRESENT EN BE + ING
(parce qu’on écrit en ce moment)
-
YESTERDAY/ LAST WEEK/ 2 DAYS AGO I saw/ bought/ I accepted/I didn’t see/buy/accept
PRETERIT SIMPLE ( parce qu’on parle du passé)
Ou bien : I was sleeping PRETERIT EN BE + ING (j’étais en train de )when I saw/ I was
playing when I heard a strange noise (j’étais en train de jouer quand j’ai entendu)PRETERIT
EN BE + ING pour décrire une action longue interrompue par une autre action courte au
passé
-
TOMORROW , Iwill go/ I am going to go/ I would like to V/ I intend to V/ I plan to V (on
exprime des projets = plans)
●FEELINGS : when someone writes a diary it is to express his or her feeling so you must know

Correction du devoir. POUR JULIE CINDY JOHANNA ET HILDA
Voici ce que vous devez inscrire dans le cours et qui vous servira pour votre oral sur Malala
1- The fighter
-
Malala is regarded as a heroine and a role model because she is a fighter :
she never gives up (= abandoner)
she is brave : she supports the others (when Malala was treated in an English hospital after
the attack , she phoned Ayesha, a victim of the Taliban to support her !)
she fights for compulsory (obligatoire) education for girls
she fights against the Taliban ‘s strict rules
but she also had to fight to survive (she almost died and spent a lot of time in rehabilitation
(=réeducation)
2- MALALA AND HER FATHER
When she was only 11 Malala made a speech against the Taliban: she reproached them
with taking away her education : it was very dangerous to do that but her father let her do it
(l’a laissé faire)
So some people blame her father for putting his daughter in danger
He is an activist and wanted his daughter to become an activist too : he wants her to
become a politician while her dream was to become a doctor…
3- MALALA FROM AN ACTIVIST TO A MARTYR AND A SYMBOL
She was an activist but she has become a symbol.WHY? The Taliban didn’t manage to silence
her: she has become a martyr so she is all the more powerful: she has become a role model
for many people;thanks to this attack by the Taliban her voice has been heard all over the
world : she has become popular and her cause =”education for all children” has become
popular too.

NOTION n°3 : idea of progress
THE QUESTION RAISED :should we change our consumption habits to make our lives and our world
better ?
PROGRESS MEANS TO CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
INTRODUCTION
When we think of progress we think of scientific progress in the medical field for example some
scientists have created an artificial heart or we think of progress in society with social improvements
such as new laws in favour of homosexual marriage or women’s rights; we also think of new
technologies with new computers or cell phones which are smaller but more efficient
But progress can also be negative when the cult of novelty leads to excess
TODAY MORE AND MORE PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT OUR CONSUMPTION HABITS HAVE NEGATIVE
CONSEQUENCES ON OUR WORLD AND OUR LIVES SO WE CAN WONDER IF WE SHOULD CHANGE OUR
CONSUMPTION HABITS
First we studied a sculpture by Duane Hanson denouncing the consumer society : a society based on
materialistic values where people buy more and more even things they don’t need.
I) THE CONSUMER SOCIETY
A- DUANE HANSON the supermarket lady .
This is a sculpture by Duane Hanson an American who wanted to denounce overconsumption in the
1970’s: it was the beginning of big supermarkets : it shows the stereotype of the American consumer
:she is a bit fat, her cart is filled with industrial products : she is buying too much and eating too much
: Duana Hanson wanted to denounce overconsumption : people buy too many things , they buy
things they don’t need : he denounces the consumer society
People tend to consume more and more
The consumer society is a society based on materialistic values
People are used to spending more and more (ont l’habitude) : they keep consuming (= they spend
their time consuming
B Adverts are everywhere
We are used to seeing adverts in magazines, on billboards, on TV
But in the US there are adverts on school buses in schools. Channel 1 offers equipment for some
schools and in returns pupils must watch tv for 10 minutes each day.
C- Shops are bigger and bigger
In the US the Mall of America in MINNESOTA is one of the biggest malls
It opened in 1992 the fourth largest mall in the USA.
There are 520 stores
27 rides and attractions : a funpark
50 restaurants
An aquarium !!!
Today we practiced reading striking figures about this mall, we’ll go on on Friday
Homework : learn the vocabulary list down to “endetter” and learn today’s lesson

86 hours is the length of time it would take to complete your
visit to the Mall if you were to spend just 10 minutes in each store
100+ pounds of food are fed daily to animals at SEA LIFE
Minnesota Aquarium - plus 90 extra pounds on the days the
sharks are fed
258 Statues of Liberty could lie inside the Mall
400+ events are held at Mall of America each year
520+ stores are located in Mall of America
5,000+ weddings have been performed at Mall of America
11,000 year-round employees at Mall of America (13,000
during peak periods)
30,000+ live plants and 400 live trees climbing as high as 35
feet tall in Nickelodeon Universe
32,000+ tons of trash recycled each year
40 million visitors annually which is more than the combined
populations of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa...and Canada

$650+ million cost to build
Nearly $2 billion Mall of America generates in economic
activity annual for the state of Minnesota
Choisissez 3 chiffres qui vous semblent le + frappant que vous pourrez utiliser pour votre

Ex : we could put two hundred and fifty eight Statues of liberty in the mall
Five thousand weddings are celebrated every year in the mall
Eleven thousand employees work in this mall
APART FROM STORES AND MALLS WHERE ELSE CAN YOU SHOP?
You can shop on the phone (each day telemarketers phone to sell items)
You can order products from magazines
you can shop on TV thanks to teleshopping programmes (in the US some channels are
devoted to teleshopping programmes all day long)
You can shop on the NET for example on ebay
WHAT FOR YOU THE ADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS OF SHOPPING ON THE NET?
ADVANTAGES PROS
You don’t have to move from your home= you
needn’t move
There is a large variety of choice
There are bargains (=less expensive= cheaper)
DRAWBACKS CONS
It is more difficult to get an exchange and to be
refunded ( paid back)
You don’t see what you buy=purchase
You can’t try on the clothes you buy
You need a credit card
You must be over 18
You can easily get into debts =in the red
You can become a shopping addict

NOTION 4 PLACES AND FORMS OF POWER
To exercise power is to influence other people, to control them
There are different types of powers; powers that influence our every day life
like the power of the media (the 4th power) , the power of advertising (adverts incite us to buy more
and more), the power of economy (our lives are influenced by the crisis), the power of books, of art
(this power influences our feelings, out behaviours), religious power (think of the power of the
Taliban: their rules are very strict see lesson on Malala)
in some countries the power of nature and natural disasters can influence people’s every day life….
But there are also institutional powers:
The 3 branches of power are
The executive power : the power of the president/ of the government: they are in charge of
governing the country;they decide a policy for their country; in the US the president is elected for 4
years and he is the army chief; he can veto laws
The judicial power that is exercised in courts (in the US there is the Supreme court)
The legislative power : it is responsible for passing laws; Congress (in the Capitol) can impeach the
president
When there are powers there are also counter powers
-movements that resist power ex: freegans/ adbuster organisation resist the power of advertising
and resist overconsumption
-lobbies : influential groups that try and influence politicians, laws
In class we raised the question : what is the power of guns and gun lobbies in the US? To what extent
can President Obama exercise his power against gun lobbies?
PART 1 FACTS AND FIGURES
Doc 1 : a commercial for a gun rack (un support pour ranger son arme près de son lit!!)
If there is a threat = une menace for example a robber = a burglar (cambrioleur) , a rapist (violeur) , a
mugger (agresseur) you can easily take your weapon thanks to the gun rack ; it is on the side of your
bed so you just need to take your gun and shoot !!
The gunrack is not expensive
It is very handy (pratique !!!) but of course very risky for children
In the US people are allowed to carry a gun : it is part of the Constitution of the US (2nd amendment)
There are 320 million inhabitants and it is estimated there are 200 million guns in circulation !!
there are more gun dealers than Mac Donald restaurants or supermarkets!!
On Black Friday 54 000 guns were sold !!!

SUITE PART 1 FACTS AND FIGURES
-What are the 3 types of weapons referred to in the documents above? What are the laws
concerning these 3 types of weapons ? Under which President was an important law in
favour of gun control voted?
-shotguns or rifles : there are almost no laws to restrict the use of shotguns: you don’t need
to be registered in most states + you don’t need a permit
-handguns : the rules are stricter ; in 38 states you need a permit to carry a handgun
-semi automatic weapons : there are very few restrictions
Under Bill Clinton , the Brady law was voted ( James Brady was shot after an attempt to
assassinate Reagan, was severely injured ; since this event he has championed gun control : he
started the Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence);
This law was voted in 1993 to require a background check (verification des antecedents ) of anyone
who wants to buy a gun (there is a five day waiting period during which your background is checked
to see if you are not a criminal); problem: it applied to only 60 %of gun sales but it does not apply to
guns you buy on the net or in a gun show
d-Is President Obama in favour or against gun control?
In 2012 there was a mass shooting in a school in Newtown Connecticut : a gunman killed
27 people : 20 pupils + 1 teacher + his mother
After the mass shooting Obama made proposals :
He is in favour of gun control he wanted to pass a law to have background checks for all
weapons and to ban assault weapons it is very difficult because the laws vary in each state + his
proposals were rejected by the Senate.
Today what has changed in many schools?
After Columbine High school mass shooting in 1999 (it took place in Colorado 2 students killed 12
other students ) metal detectors were installed in schools to prevent criminals from entering schools
WHICH FILM DENOUNCED THE SHOOTING?
Michael Moore is a film director who wants to sensitize people to the problem of guns and gun
lobbies. He denounced the problem of guns in his film BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE
Michael Moore is a whistle blower = lanceur d’alerte : he wants to change things and ban guns
In 2011 32 thousand people were killed by guns and 40 % households (ménages) own a gun

Cours pour les absents
PART 2 : WHY IS THERE A GUN CULTURE IN THE USA?
THE HISTORICAL EXPLANATION : why did people start using guns?
THE USA is a nation of gun fighters
- It is part of their culture because they carried guns to protect themselves against
wild animals, Native Americans, thieves= bandits
- During the conquest of the west they needed a gun to fight against a “wild world”
They passed the 2ND AMENDMENT in 1791: the 2nd amendment says that all
AMERICANS have the right to carry a gun
What qualities are associated with guns?
Guns still symbolize power, courage, strength, manhood (virilité) like in westerns and
other movies; to carry a gun is to be strong
In movies, heroes often have a gun as a sign of their manhoood
THE SOCIAL EXPLANATION : why do people use guns? What makes some young people
violent?
poor people live in inner cities = ghettoes and violence prevails (règne) there; they
own guns to feel powerful and to feel safer (for examples in places where there are a
lot of gangs )+ many people are influenced by what they see on TV; children want to
imitate their heroes; it is said video games are also a cause for violence
THE POLITICAL EXPLANATION what are the NRA and the HCI? What is the link between the
NRA and political parties
-the NRA= NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION (4 million members) subsidizes (
subentionne) the Republican party and is extremely powerful and influential in the
US; it spent almost 6 million dollars against Obama; politicians don’t want to fight
against the NRA because they need their money
It organizes annual meetings and sponsors education programmes: it is very influential
It organizes gun shows where you can buy guns
It organizes youth days: children can become free members of the NRA
The slogan of the NRA is “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”
It means that only mad people kill the others for no reason
But normal people must have the right to carry a gun to defend themselves
They don’t understand that the 2nd amendment dates back to 1871 , a time when guns were
needed
-
THE HCI = HANDGUN CONTROL INCORPORATION
It has fewer members only 150,000 it is in favour of gun control but not as powerful as the
NRA; they can’t really fight against the NRA
Does Obama question the 2nd AMENDMENT?
No he knows he can’t change the constitution but he would like to limit the right to carry
guns
