Dear Friends & Fellow Kiwanians,
4
We are now almost 3 months into a new Kiwanis administrative year. It is the first chance which I have, as President of your
Foundation, to share with you some news and thoughts on what the Foundation can do to assist you and your Clubs.
My thanks to our Immediate Past President, George Harvey for his leadership of the work of the Foundation in the past two years.
He has kindly agreed to continue to exercise the editorial pen for this Newsletter.
Your Foundation Board met in early October to undertake a comprehensive review of the Foundation’s work and programs, to
look closely at its financial position and to brainstorm on new targets and initiatives that may assist you, your Clubs and your Divisions in the work which you do. Here are some of the highlights from that meeting:
NEWSLETTER NOTE...
* The Foundation already recognizes Clubs across Canada for Membership Growth. We have added recognition for those Clubs
who sponsor the building of a new Club, adult or youth, during the administrative year. This compliments the Foundation’s existing
commitment to financial support of such activities.
PLEASE ENSURE for future newsletters that ALL PHOTOS ARE either ORIGINALS, or EMAILED (good quality please) and
NOT newspaper or print copies. WE ARE UNABLE TO PRINT NEWSPAPER COPIES (they don’t turn out). THANKS!
* Renewed and updated are our Matching Scholarship and Service Leadership Bursary programs. We have also renewed our support for the Key Leader program across Canada. Each of these are again consistent with the Foundation’s focus on building the
leaders of tomorrow today.
* You will soon find new and updated Brochures regarding the Foundation’s programs making their way around to your Clubs and
Divisions courtesy of Foundation Ambassadors. In fact, we will place renewed emphasis in the year ahead on the work of our bridge
to you, the Ambassadors. Please make a representative of the Foundation a speaker on at least one of your programs during the
next few months. Your Ambassador or one of our Directors would be pleased to attend.

* As the Foundation approaches its capital target of $1 million by the end of 2007, your Board has set a new target, looking to a
capital base of a minimum of $1.5 million by 2015. At a conservative rate of return of 6% per annum, this would provide at least
$90,000 - $100,000 per year available for grants, bursaries and scholarships independent of any other revenues raised.
Think how this could assist community projects and challenges received from all across Canada.
Despite some of the difficulties experienced earlier this year with the Books for Kids program, the Foundation, under the financial
stewardship of our Treasurer, Jim Steele, is on firm ground. Our conservative investment policies meet our dual objective to obtain
moderate long term growth while protecting capital. We also ensure liquidity of a portion of our funds to be able to meet the challenges which you, the Clubs, put in front of us to support your work in your communities and with the leaders of tomorrow.
I would hope that you will feel free to look at our website (www.kfcdn.org) if you need information on any of our programs or
would like to get in touch with us.
Best wishes for a productive Kiwanis year.
Regehr’s Printing Ltd., Winnipeg, Manitoba
George Cadman, President.

President Dan Roberts of the Kiwanis Club of Oliver, B.C is shown
proudly presenting a Matching Scholarship to Mellisa Machial. She
will be studying science at UBC Kelowna and hopes to study medicine.

EDITORIAL
At the front of your newsletter is a form that
will allow you to donate to your Foundation. Please
ensure you do this prior to December 31st 2007.
As a Kiwanian you will of course receive a
Tax Receipt for your donation, which will help defray
some of the taxes we all pay.
Your donations have always been carefully
invested, and the annual interest is used to help
young people further their education, and to assist
in the case of disasters throughout Canada.
One area in which clubs could help the
Foundation, is by purchasing Memorial Cards. These
come in a pack of five costing $125.00. It is a fine
way of remembering your fellow Kiwanians who
have passed away.
You may not know this, but we have a
reciprocal agreement with the Kiwanis International
Foundation, whereby all monies for their programmes
can be paid to us. These funds are reported quarterly
to KIF and can be utilized by asking your District to
make a request to us. If we agree with your request,
we will pass it to the KIF for their approval.
You can also purchase a Hixon and other KIF
honours through our Foundation as an individual
and obtain your Tax Receipt.
Mel Osborne Fellows please also remember
your $150.00 Annual Donation.
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you
and your families.
George Harvey,
Editor.

Val Wilkuns of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa reports that the club has had the
pleasure in presenting a Mel Osborne Scholarship to Trevin Stratton, a long time
member of the Kiwanis Family. When Trevin started high school he joined Key
Club and eventually was elected as the club’s President. While in Key Club he
initiated several projects which still continue. The most significant of these was
organizing high school students to read to elementary school students to promote
literacy. Another was collecting Canadian Tire money to buy needy children gifts
at Christmas. The Canadian Tire Store reduced the cost of the toys so more gifts
could be purchased. Trevin will be continuing his studies at the London School of
Economics as he works towards his Masters on International Policy.
