Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is defined as one of the disorders some people might experience after a traumatic
experience. We will review the definition and the biological and psychological correlates for this disorder. As well, we
will talk about the biological and psychological treatment. A review of potential future treatment options will be
addressed.

Lors de cette demi-journée consacrée à l’interface des troubles anxieux avec la toxicomanie, nous aborderons les
sujets suivants : l’épidémiologie de la comorbidité de l’abus de substances et des troubles anxieux, le dépistage des
troubles anxieux auprès de la clientèle d’un centre de réadaptation pour toxicomanes, l’anxiété et son traitement
chez les patients souffrant d’un trouble sévère de la personnalité et d’un problème d’usage de substances, une
introduction à l’entretien motivationnel adapté à l’abus de substances pour patients anxieux et les défis que posent la
double problématique de l’anxiété et de la toxicomanie à l’organisation actuelle des soins ainsi qu’à la recherche.

Plusieurs symptômes des différents troubles anxieux chevauchent les symptômes du trouble déficitaire d’attention; la
comorbidité entre les deux pathologies est d’ailleurs fréquente. L’identification de ces deux entités diagnostiques
représente un défi clinique et des traitements spécifiques permettent de mieux cibler les différents aspects de ces
troubles. À partir de cas cliniques et des données de recherches récentes sur le sujet, nous discuterons des enjeux
souvent rencontrés dans le travail auprès des gens souffrant de ces pathologies.

Anxiety in Children and Adolescents (English presentation)

Anxiety disorders can be debilitating for up to 10% of children, interfering with life at home, at school, and socially.
Fortunately, psychological and medical treatments have been developed and evaluated that can improve these
outcomes. This presentation will review common anxiety disorders as they manifest at different ages, and helpful
interventions that parents, therapists, and doctors can provide.

Cet atelier portera sur l’évaluation et le traitement des problèmes d’anxiété chez les enfants et les adolescents. Nous
présenterons d’abord quelques données récentes sur l’épidémiologie et les facteurs de risque. La majeure partie de la
présentation portera sur les stratégies de traitement reconnues efficaces, comme la thérapie cognitivo-comportementale
(surtout restructuration cognitive et exposition), avec une emphase sur la spécificité des manifestations de l’anxiété chez
les jeunes. Des vignettes cliniques serviront à illustrer la présentation.

Full Catastrophe Living: The impact of our stressful lives

How stressful are our lives? What is the impact, if any, of daily stressors or major stressful life events on our physical
and mental health? This presentation will review recent research attempting to answer these questions. Meditation
and mindfulness living will be discussed as additional tools to use in the context of stress management and treatment
of anxiety related disorders. How all of this relates to the concept of happiness will briefly be discussed.

Anxiety in the geriatric population: a review of diagnostic challenges and treatment approaches
(English presentation)

Since accurate diagnosis and full consideration of the concurrent medical and psychiatric problems are key issues in
geriatric mental health care, we will first review the various medical and psychiatric illnesses that present with anxiety
symptoms in the elderly. Then, the main treatment options for anxiety disorders will be reviewed focusing on studies
done in geriatric populations. Finally, this presentation will address practical issues related to minimizing the use of
benzodiazepines in the elderly while providing adequate control of anxiety symptoms and applying recommended
longer term treatments.

Anxiety: Fear of illness and death (English presentation)
John Walker, Ph.D.
Fear of illness and death is common in the community and among people seeking treatment for stress and anxiety.
Healthy anxiety may range from milder worries about somatic symptoms to full-blown hypochondriasis. This
presentation will describe a practical approach to cognitive behavior therapy for these problems including exposure to
feared health problems and to themes related to death, response prevention, cognitive reappraisal, acceptance, and
focusing on positive goals and enjoyment of life.

La prévalence des troubles anxieux et de l'humeur chez les asthmatiques (adultes), ainsi que l'impact de ces
troubles sur le contrôle de l'asthme et la qualité de vie des asthmatiques seront présentés au cours de cette session.
La prévalence des troubles anxieux et de l'humeur chez les patients souffrant de maladie pulmonaire obstructive
chronique (MPOC), et l'impact de ces troubles sur la pronostic de la maladie seront également abordés.

Comorbidity in childhood anxiety (English Presentation)

Anxiety disorders in childhood are common and serve as the foundation for anxiety disorders in later life. Children
presenting for treatment of anxiety disorders frequently have comorbid conditions such as ADHD. This presentation
will discuss the assessment and management of anxiety disorders with common comorbid conditions during
childhood and adolescence. Treatment of these conditions has important implications for educational achievement
and quality of life.

Anxiety and Depression (English presentation)

This workshop will review the various aspects of diagnoses and treatment of the mood and anxiety disorders in terms
of co-morbidity and options for management. The workshop will also review the results of having more than one
diagnosis comorbid with depression and specifically how anxiety worsens the prognosis in patients suffering with
depression and the need for more intense treatment. As well, the workshop will review the pathogenesis, suggesting
why anxiety disorders may make someone more susceptible to comorbidity, depression and substance abuse, with a
model of their development discussed.

Dans cette présentation nous allons revoir la littérature qui examine la relation entre le stress mental, les attaques de
panique et la maladie coronarienne. La recherche des études du « Montreal Heart Panic Project » sera présentée.
Ce projet étudie la relation entre la douleur thoracique, les consultations aux départements d’urgence, la perfusion
du myocarde et les attaques de panique induites.

L’hypocondrie est un syndrome bien connu depuis l’antiquité. Quoique classée dans la catégorie des troubles
somatoformes, la phénoménologie clinique nous questionne sur les liens avec d’autres psychopathologies surtout
anxieuses mais aussi dépressives ou des formes mineures d’inquiétudes reliées à la santé.
Dans de cet atelier, les participants pourront :
• mieux faire le diagnostic différentiel et mieux comprendre les liens avec les autres psychopathologies en
particulier avec les troubles anxieux.
• développer un cadre conceptuel
• élaborer un plan de traitement et mettre en place des interventions thérapeutiques qui se sont avérés
efficaces avec cette clientèle.

Anxiety and Chronic pain (English presentation)
Michael Sullivan, Ph.D.
During the course of the last century, mental health treatment began to focus on chronic pain. More recently, the
scientific community has witnessed a shift in theoretical and clinical interest in the cognitive and affective
determinants in chronic pain. Research has shown that negative emotional states such as depression, anger and
anxiety can contribute to the intensity of perceived pain and the rate of incapacity related to this pain. This
presentation will provide an overview of different psychological approaches to the treatment of chronic pain. As well,
specific psychological treatment for the management of chronic pain and its incapacitating effects will be discussed.
Finally, future theoretical and clinical developments will be explored.

Anxiety and Respiratory Problems (English presentation)

The prevalence of anxiety and mood disorders in adult asthmatics as well as the impact of these disorders on asthma
control and quality of life will be discussed. As well, the prevalence of anxiety and mood disorders in patients with
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as the impact of these disorders on exacerbation rates will be
explored.

Anxiété et Insomnie (Présentation en français)

Près de 40% des patients atteints de dépression, de troubles anxieux ou de schizophrénie ont des difficultés
chroniques avec leur sommeil. De plus, de nombreux patients atteints d'insomnie chronique présentent des
symptômes anxieux ou dépressifs pouvant être, du moins en partie, secondaires à l'insomnie. Finalement, même en
l'absence de symptômes anxieux ou dépressifs francs, l'insomnie chronique peut être conceptualisée dans un
continuum avec ces pathologies, surtout l'anxiété.
Cet atelier tentera d'exposer et de mieux comprendre les interactions entre l'insomnie et l'anxiété et proposera un
algorithme thérapeutique en conformité avec une approche dimensionnelle de l'insomnie chronique.

Anxiété et cancer (Présentation en français)

L’impact du cancer se fait ressentir tout au long de la maladie, dès sa détection jusqu’en phase palliative. L’anxiété
est au premier plan de la réponse du patient à cette maladie grave. Le trouble d’adaptation, le stress posttraumatique, la peur de la récidive sont autant de manifestations possibles. Durant cette session, nous explorons
l’anxiété secondaire au cancer et les traitements adaptés à cette population spécifique, souvent aux prises avec des
questionnements existentiels.

The understanding of anxiety disorders and their comorbidities requires a close look at the complex hormonal and inflammatory
mechanisms which fall outside the framework of traditional mental health practice. As existing anxiolytic medications are largely
represented by benzodiazepines and antidepressants, one can surmise the growing importance of molecules originally destined
to treat other psychiatric conditions and or systemic ones such as cardiovascular disease. On the psychological front, virtual
reality and telepsychotherapy offer important advantages to both patients and professionals. After a brief overview of the
advantages of using these new technologies, the results of principal studies in this area will be reviewed. Attendees will have the
opportunity to see the extent to which reality now goes beyond fiction.
La compréhension de l'anxiété et de ses comorbidités fait appel à des mécanismes hormonaux et inflammatoires complexes qui
dépassent largement le cadre traditionnel de la santé mentale. Si la médication anxiolytique actuelle est majoritairement
représentée par les benzodiazépines et les antidépresseurs, on pourra voir ici l'importance grandissante des molécules
destinées au départ à traiter d'autres affections psychiatriques et systémiques, entre autres du système cardiovasculaire. Sur le
plan psychologique, la réalité virtuelle et la télépsychothérapie offrent des avantages importants pour les professionnels et les
patients. Après un bref exposé de ces avantages, les résultats des principales études démontant l'efficacité des thérapies
utilisant ces technologies seront présentés. Les participants pourront ainsi constater jusqu'à quel point la réalité dépasse
désormais la fiction.

This session will review the anxiety disorders in terms of the biological correlates and psychological
considerations and how our understanding of these will help us understand the required approaches to
pharmacological and psychological treatment of such disorders. A review of future options and new
