Vor Jahren, fast noch als Kind, hat Jack ein entsetzliches Verbrechen begangen. Die meiste Zeit seines Lebens hat er in unterschiedlichen Anstalten verbracht. Jetzt ist er 24 und wird aus dem Gefängnis entlassen. Ausgestattet
mit einem neuen Namen und mit einem Job, muss er sich nicht nur in der
ihm unbekannten Welt der Erwachsenen, sondern in einem ganz neuen
Leben zurechtfinden. Nur sein Bewährungshelfer Terry weiß um seine wahre
Identität.
Unter falschem Namen zu leben, ist für Jack einerseits ein Segen, andererseits ist es ein Fluch. Denn während er verzweifelt versucht, seine neue
Existenz in den Griff zu kriegen und sich der zweiten Chance, die er bekommen hat, wert zu erweisen, leidet er doch zugleich darunter, dass er den
Menschen, die er nun kennen und lieben lernt, nichts von seiner Vergangenheit erzählen kann, sondern die monströse Tat der Vergangenheit als
sein Geheimnis bewahren muss.
Drehbuchautor Mark O’Rowe: „Als ich das Buch von Jonathan Trigell zum
ersten Mal las, fand ich die ersten zwei Kapitel furchterregend. Man weiß,
dass dieser Bursche Jack etwas Fürchterliches getan haben muss, aber man
weiß nicht, was. Daraus ergibt sich die Spannung. Im Film haben wir nun
versucht, dass das Publikum Sympathien für Jack entwickelt, ehe wir die
Wahrheit über das Verbrechen verraten, das er begangen hat oder wegen
dessen er verurteilt wurde. Deshalb: Wenn man Jack kennenlernt, ist er
zunächst einmal einfach nur ein gutmütiger Junge …“

Years ago, when he was virtually still a child, Jack committed a terrible crime.
He has spent almost all his life in different institutions. Now he is released
from prison. He is twenty-four. Equipped with a new name and a job, he has
to find his way – not only in the world of adults, but in a completely different life. His parole officer, Terry, is the only one who knows his real identity.
Living under a false name is, on the one hand, a blessing and, on the other,
a curse. Although he is desperate to make his new life work and to make

the most of the second chance he has been given, he suffers because he is
not able to tell the people he has met and learned to love anything about
his past. Instead, he must keep the monstrous deed to himself.
Screenwriter Mark O’Rowe: “When I read the book for the first time I found
it terrifying for the first two chapters. You know that this guy Jack has done
something appalling, but you don’t quite know what. So there is tension
there. So what we did with the film was try to make the audience fall for the
character of Jack before we reveal the truth of what he did or what he was
convicted of doing. First you meet Jack and he’s just a sweet natured young
guy.”

dort am University College Philosophie und
arbeitete zunächst als Theaterregisseur in
Dublin. Ab 1998 inszenierte er am Donmar
Warehouse Theatre in London, später auch
am Royal National Theatre („The Pillowman“,
2003). Sein erster Kinofilm INTERMISSION
entstand 2003 nach einem Drehbuch des
Dramatikers Mark O’Rowe, der nun auch
Jonathan Trigells preisgekrönten Roman
„Boy A“ für die Leinwand adaptierte.

philosophy at University College and worked
at first as a stage director in Dublin. In 1998
he began directing at Donmar Warehouse in
London, and later at the Royal National
Theatre (“The Pillowman“, 2003). Made in
2003, his first theatrical film, INTERMISSION
was based on a screenplay by dramatist
Mark O’Rowe, who has created this adaptation of Jonathan Trigell’s award-winning
novel “Boy A” for the screen.

Il y a des années, alors qu’il était encore presque un enfant, Jack a commis
un crime horrible. Il a passé la plus grande partie de sa vie dans divers pénitenciers. A 24 ans, il sort maintenant de prison. Pourvu d’un nouveau nom
et d’un emploi, il faut désormais qu’il se débrouille dans l’univers inconnu
des adultes mais aussi dans sa toute nouvelle forme d’existence. Seul Terry,
le délégué chargé de l’accompagner dans la vie civile, est au courant de sa
véritable identité.
Vivre sous un faux nom, c’est pour Jack une bénédiction en même temps
qu’une malédiction. En effet, tandis qu’il tente désespérément de prendre
en main sa nouvelle existence et de prouver qu’il mérite cette seconde
chance qu’on lui a accordée, il souffre de ne rien pouvoir raconter de son
passé aux gens qu’il apprend à connaître et à aimer. Il doit conserver en lui
comme un secret le crime monstrueux d’autrefois.
Le scénariste Mark O’Rowe : « Lorsque j’ai lu pour la première fois le livre de
Jonathan Trigell, j’ai trouvé les deux premiers chapitres terrifiants. On sait
que ce type, Jack, doit avoir commis quelque chose d’effroyable mais on ne
sait pas quoi. C’est ce qui produit le suspense. Dans le film, nous avons
essayé d’éveiller la sympathie du public pour Jack avant de révéler la vérité
sur le crime qu’il a commis ou pour lequel il a été condamné. C’est pourquoi, lorsqu’on fait la connaissance de Jack, c’est au premier abord tout simplement un brave gars … »
