Direct and Indirect Object Cheat Sheet First read the sentence and comprehend what it is saying. Next find the subject of the sentence and label it. Then find the verb(s) and label it or them. Finally put the two together and ask what or whom to find the direct object. Once you have that label it. Go on and ask to or for whom after saying the subject verb and direct object to find the indirect object and label it. S + V + What = Direct Object S+V + (Direct Object if one is in the sentence) + to or for whom = indirect object Once you have found them all and labeled everything decide pronoun you will use to replace the direct and indirect objects. Here is a chart of Direct object pronouns. French Me/m’ Te/t’ Le/la/l’ English Me You (sing., familiar) It, him/her French Nous Vous Les English Us You (formal, plural) them To use them you need to place the pronoun before the conjugated verb, or in front of the infinitive. Two examples of each use follows: Without a DO pronoun Ils regardent le defile? With a DO pronoun Ils le regardent? Je t’invite chez moi pour le noël. . Without a DO pronoun Vous allez acheter la bouche de noel? With a DO pronoun Vous allez l’acheter ? Elle va nous invite chez moi. Indirect object pronoun is use to avoid repetition. Place the indirect object pronoun in front of the conjugated verb or in front of the infinitive. Examples follow: Je vous envoie un invitation a ma fête. Tu pourrais lui offrir un CD. If you have a direct object and an indirect object in the same sentence use the following chart to decide in which order to place the object pronouns.
