PREVIEW : GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS
Girondins de Bordeaux - Olympique Lyonnais Feature Preview
After a chastening 6-1 defeat away to OGC Nice in midweek, Girondins de Bordeaux have a chance to bounce back quickly but a
home clash with Olympique Lyonnais at the Matmut Atlantique on Saturday is possibly the last thing Willy Sagnol's side wanted just
now.
Bordeaux took the lead against Nice at the Allianz Riviera on Wednesday thanks to Jaroslav Plasil's early goal but they were trailing
by half-time and capitulated in the second half after Enzo Crivelli was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Jérémy
Pied. It was the first time Les Girondins had conceded six goals in a game since a UEFA Cup mauling from Parma in 1999 and the
first time they had let in six in a league match since losing 6-3 at Monaco in 1995.
However, Sagnol's side suffered a similarly heavy loss the last time they played host to Lyon, losing 5-0 at the Stade
Chaban-Delmas last December. Memories of that night are still fresh as the teams prepare to clash again, although this time they will
do so in Bordeaux's new stadium.
Les Girondins were already enduring a slow start to the Ligue 1 campaign before the Nice debacle and have won just once in seven
matches so far, at home to FC Nantes last month. They could therefore desperately do with a boost before making the long trip to
Russia to face Rubin Kazan on Europa League duty next week.
"It was a real humiliation which puts our feet back on the ground," said Sagnol of the defeat on the Côte d'Azur. "After the match we
had a long exchange in the dressing room although we knew we would not find a solution immediately. I have nothing I need to say to
the players. They know what I expect of them in the match against Lyon. I want to see men on the pitch, not especially footballers.
"We have always been honest about the fact this is a team lacking experience and maturity. When the state of mind is not adequate
for a top-level match, we are in difficulty. There were already signs of weakness, notably in the first half against Toulouse," added
Sagnol of last weekend's 1-1 draw in the Garonne derby, when Bordeaux needed a late goal by Crivelli to take a point.
Crivelli will serve an automatic suspension this weekend against a Lyon side dealing with a lengthy injury list but buoyed by a 2-0
victory at home to SC Bastia in midweek that leaves them unbeaten in five games in all competitions.
With Nabil Fekir missing long term and Mathieu Valbuena also on the sidelines along with the likes of Clément Grenier, Gueïda
Fofana, Bakary Koné, Henri Bedimo, Rafael, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Rachid Ghezzal, OL looked to their productive academy for
solutions in midweek. They were rewarded as teenager Aldo Kalulu marked his first Ligue 1 start with a first goal to set them on their
way before Corentin Tolisso secured the points late on.
That win against a Bastia side who played more than half the game with 10 men came as a boost to Lyon after they had failed to
hold on to leads in their previous two matches at Gent in the Champions League and at Marseille, despite their opponents having
men sent off on each occasion.
"We had been impatiently waiting for this victory even if we are still a little weak in certain areas," said right-back Christophe Jallet.
"It wasn't our best performance but it was good to build on the display at Marseille. In terms of the scenario it was an improvement on
the last two games."
Coach Hubert Fournier must now decide whether to shuffle his squad again as he looks to keep in touch with Paris Saint-Germain
and AS Saint-Etienne at the top of the table while also keeping an eye on Tuesday's Champions League clash at home to Valencia.

Week 8
Girondins de Bordeaux - Olympique Lyonnais
Girondins de Bordeaux - Olympique Lyonnais
- HISTORY: Bordeaux have hosted Lyon on 50 previous occasions in the top flight. Bordeaux have recorded 22 wins, Lyon have won
13 and there have been 15 draws.
- Bordeaux have scored 82 goals in this fixture, Lyon have scored 57.
- This will be the first meeting of the clubs at Bordeaux's new home, the Matmut Atlantique.
- Lyon won 5-0 in last season's corresponding fixture at the Stade Chaban-Delmas on December 21, 2014. Alexandre Lacazette (39',
90'), Corentin Tolisso (56'), Nabil Fekir (81') and Jordan Ferri (85') scored for OL while Bordeaux had Nicolas Pallois sent off in the
65th minute in front of 31,873 fans.
- Lyon have won on each of their last three visits to Bordeaux, scoring 11 goals and conceding one. Bordeaux last won at home to OL
in February 2012, when Yoan Gouffran's goal secured a 1-0 victory.
- The most recent meeting of the clubs came at the Stade Municipal de Gerland on May 16 and ended in a 1-1 draw. Enzo Crivelli (3')
put Bordeaux ahead with Nabil Fekir (9') levelling for Lyon in front of 39,961 fans.
- Lyon's win in Bordeaux last season was their biggest ever in the fixture. Bordeaux's record win at home to OL remains a 6-1
success in the first meeting of the sides in the top flight, back in September 1951.
- GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX
- GENERAL: Bordeaux come into Week 8 in 16th place in Ligue 1 with seven points, having won one, drawn four and lost two of their
seven games to date. They are four points adrift of the top half and four clear of the relegation zone.
- This time last season, Bordeaux were second with 14 points, two points adrift of leaders Olympique de Marseille. However, at the
same stage in 2013-14 they were 18th with six points.
- Willy Sagnol's side were not lower than seventh at any point last season, but have not been higher than 10th this season.
- In their last outing, Bordeaux were beaten 6-1 by OGC Nice at the Allianz Riviera on Wednesday. Jaroslav Plasil (6') put the visitors
in front on the Côte d'Azur, but Valère Germain (33') and Mickaël Le Bihan (42') scored to have Nice ahead by the break. Bordeaux
had Enzo Crivelli sent off five minutes after the break and capitulated to further goals by Nicolas Pallois (og-51'), Hatem Ben Arfa (68',
75') and Alexandre Mendy (75') in front of 13,686 fans.
- The Bordeaux line-up in Nice (4-3-3): Carrasso; Guilbert, Pablo, Pallois, Poundjé; Plasil (Rolán, 55'), Chantôme, Saivet (c); Khazri
(Biyogo Poko, 56'), Crivelli, Maurice-Belay (Jussiê, 71').
- That result ended a run of four matches without defeat in all competitions for Bordeaux and was their first loss in Ligue 1 in six
outings since the opening weekend of the season.
- It was Bordeaux's heaviest defeat since losing 5-0 at home to Lyon in December last year and the first time they had conceded six
goals in a game since a 6-0 defeat to Parma in Italy in the UEFA Cup quarter-final second leg in 1998-99. Les Girondins had not
conceded six in the league since a 6-3 defeat at Monaco in March 1995.
- Abdou Traoré and Wahbi Khazri's next appearances will be their 100th in Ligue 1. Grégory Sertic has started 100 Ligue 1 games.
- Bordeaux have scored eight goals so far this season, giving them the joint 11th-best attack coming into the weekend. Their 0-0 draw
away to LOSC Lille in Week 3 is the only game in which they have failed to score.
- Wahbi Khazri is Bordeaux's leading scorer so far this season with three Ligue 1 goals, followed by Henri Saivet with two. Khazri has
also provided two assists. The Tunisian has scored four goals in all competitions.
- Sagnol's men have conceded 12 goals. Only SC Bastia and ESTAC Troyes had let in more coming into the weekend. They have
kept two clean sheets as well as shipping six to Nice in midweek.
- Nicolas Pallois is the only Bordeaux player to have started all seven Ligue 1 games this season. Nicolas Maurice-Belay (5 starts/2
substitute appearances) and André Biyogo Poko (4/3) have also appeared in every game.
- No Bordeaux player appeared in every match last season. Cédric Carrasso (37) made the most starts.
