PAST TIME
PRETERITE SIMPLE :

3- Past actions whose importance has dwindled
She took 2 tablets half an hour ago.
Time markers :
Yesterday, …. Ago (3 days ago, 6 months ago, 5 years ago), last … (Monday, week, month, year), formerly,
previously, in (1970), in the 18th century.
In the old days, once upon a time, during the war.
PRETERITE CONTINUOUS :
Il s'agit d'une action passée mais plus longue dans le temps que pour le preterite simple.
On utilise Was/were + ING (he was eating ; they were listening)

Meanings :
1- Simultaneity of 2 actions (in the past)
She was calling the ambulance while her husband was giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
2- Actions of different lengths (in the past)
The telephone rang while she was giving an injection.
3- Temporary past action
Last winter she was expecting a baby.
4- Duration
The research team was making quick progress.

Meanings :
1- In-depth vision of events
As soon as penicillin had been discovered, certain diseases were eradicated.
2- Necessary order of events

PLU PERFECT CONTINUOUS :
Comme le plu perfect simple mais avec une notion de durée dans le temps.
Meanings :
1- In-depth vision of events (emphasis on duration)
The anaesthetist had been working for 15 non-stop when the incident occured.
2- Emphasis on duration
Researchers had been trying to find a cure for diphteria for years and years when they finally came up
with a vaccine.

Fill in the gaps with the most suitable appropriate tenses.
Choose from PRESENT, PRETERITE, PRESENT PERFECT, simple or continuous.
Also Beware of the PASSIVE.
We are an NGO and are currently recruited doctors to work in our rural Health Centre in Senegal. The Health
Centre was created 5 years ago and serves a population of 7,000 people, with full services, accomodation,
clinical support and ambulance for patient transfer.
Applicants must be single and have had at least 3 years previous experience in the field. Preference will be given
to candidates who have been working in tropical medicine and/or who have had experience in emergencies.

Rappel : Jusqu’à « et demi » on utilise PAST, puis après « et demi » on utilise TO.
On utilise o'clock que pour une heure fixe, jamais avec PAST et TO.
Exemples : 3 o'clock = 3 heure ; a quarter past 3 = 3 heure et quart ; half past 3 = 3 heure et demi ; a quarter
to 4 = 4 heure moins le quart ; ten to 3 = 3 heure moins dix
