Deep ravines, torrents, pools and waterfalls create a rich, diverse and attractive landscape,
perfect for multiple outdoor sports and activities.
Numerous sites and easy trails, in the heart of the National Park, provide endless opportunities
to explore this unique countryside and remain constantly on the move. If you’re looking for
unique encounters, in exceptional surroundings, Reunion Island is the place for you!
Safeguarding and sharing these treasures with future generations should be a responsibility
that we all share!
As part of your outdoor activities, you’re going to encounter some remarkable natural
environments.
This heritage is fragile, so here are a few simple rules to follow to help preserve it:
• take all your rubbish with you, even if it’s biodegradable (it encourages the presence of cats
and rats which are harmful to native birds).
• stay on signposted trails and don’t take shortcuts
• respect the surrounding vegetation without trampling plants underfoot or breaking branches
• when lighting a fire, you must only use designated fire sites; help protect the natural environment
from any fire risk (cigarettes, matches, camp fire, fire works).

Pitons, cirques and
remparts of Reunion Island
inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2010
IRT/Anakaopress©
The island’s Pitons, Cirques and Remparts were included on UNESCO’s exclusive world heritage list in 2010, in recognition of their exceptional natural
beauty and the richness of the biodiversity that they support. Reunion Island’s
National Park oversees this area which extends over 40% of the island, including the heart of the region.
ON LAND
Trembling on top of a volcano
With its microclimates and range of landscapes, it’s impossible to remain indifferent to the
charms of Reunion Island. You can enjoy hikes, horse-riding or mountain biking on trails
throughout the islands. The island’s unique volcano transports you into a fantasy world. You
can visit its underground galleries and explore the very bowels of the earth; the island’s interior
offers numerous adventure and discovery courses, designed to cater for all tastes.
Golf, potholing, climbing or a simple walk in the forest, exploring the highland tamarinds and
coastal beaches: the choice is yours!

ON LAND
With more than 900 kilometres of marked routes and three long-distance
footpaths, Reunion is a paradise for hikers.
Its Pitons, Cirques and Remparts have been included on UNESCO’s world
heritage list, and serve as a showcase for the island’s heritage. A succession
of exceptional sites and landscapes will inspire you to explore some of the
island’s more remote spots. From kids’ trails and family walks, to extreme
hikes ... there’s something to make everyone happy. Whether you prefer
hiking with experienced guides or under your own steam, there are numerous
mountain gîtes and establishments offering table d’hôtes meals where you can
enjoy hospitality and friendship. Heritage, culture, geology, photo trekking and
environmental tourism all intersect along your route.
6
The Piton de la Fournaise is one of the world’s most
active volcanoes. It’s also unique in being one of the
most accessible. You can even go down into the Enclos
Fouqué, one of the calderas. Follow signposted trails or a
guide who can lead you further afield to explore the unique
surroundings. The vast area, surrounding the volcano, will
certainly pique your interest: the road that leads to the
volcano and cuts across the Plaine des Sables alone is
worth a trip. The Rivière des Remparts, the Nez Coupé
de Sainte-Rose, the Cassé de la Rivière de l’Est, the
Piton de l’Eau and the Route des Laves can all be done
in a day.

VOLCANO
Bélouve forest is quite unique. It is one of the most
beautiful tamarind forests in the island. Located in the
eastern highlands, it looks out onto the cirque of Salazie
and the spectacular Trou de Fer waterfalls. There are
many endemic species and tree ferns along the trail.
Botany enthusiasts will just love it.
The site can be reached via a route through the forest,
where you can enjoy plenty of designated picnic areas.

ON LAND
The Piton des Neiges summit is a must for any serious
hiker. At 3,071 metres, it’s the highest point in the
Vanilla Islands. The sun rising over the clouds is a
simply stupendous sight. There are a variety of possible
itineraries, via Les Plaines, Cilaos, le Dimitile, Bélouve
and Salazie, requiring varying levels of endurance. We
recommend spending a night at the refuge to watch the
sun rise over the entire island.

PITON DES NEIGES

MAÏDO
Le Piton Maïdo is very popular, particularly if you
enjoy family excursions. Its major attraction is the view.
Wherever you look, whether over the Cirque of Mafate,
the Piton des Neiges, the Roche Ecrite or the west
coast, you’ll be dazzled by some truly magnificent
scenery. It’s also one of the access points down to the
Cirque of Mafate, and the îlets de Roche Plate and les
Orangers.
Experienced hikers can follow trails to the Grand Bénare,
the island’s third highest peak (2,898 m), which offers an
exceptional panoramic view, or take an alternative route
towards the historic site of la Glacière.
Other attractions here include: the Maïdo’s highland
tamarind forest and the geranium fields, to which the
island’s perfume distilleries owe their age-old reputation.
And if you enjoy observing the night sky, the Maïdo is the
place for you.
THE DIMITILE
THE CIRQUES
8
The Dos d’Âne and La Roche Écrite hiking
trails offer exceptional views. The trek from Cap
Noir to Dos d’Ane, overlooking the Cirque of
Mafate, is an easy walk. Plaine des Chicots,
en route to the Roche Ecrite, is Reunion cuckoo
shrike - a native bird that is also a protected
species - country. The Plaine d’Affouches
region, the Colorado, the Chemin des Anglais
and the coastal path which borders the coast
between Saint-Denis and Sainte-Suzanne, also
have their fans.
SAINTE-ROSE
IRT/Emmanuel Virin©
The three cirques on the island (Salazie, Cilaos and
Mafate) are vast amphitheatres marked out by remparts
which are part of the National Park. There are many,
and varied trails through this authentic scenery. Mafate,
a unique paradise for hikers, can only be accessed on
foot via five entry points: the Rivière des Galets, Dos
d’Âne, Salazie, Cilaos and le Maïdo. There are many
trails and hiking refuges. You can hike for several days
through there.
The beauty of lush, green Salazie, with its waterfalls
and legendary peaks overlooked by Bélouve forest
and the Piton des Neiges, is sure to delight. Cilaos is
a memorable and popular mountain resort that offers a
range of activities.
Hiking is accessible to everyone here.
THE NORTH
The peak offers a splendid panoramic view of
Cilaos, L’Entre-Deux, the Piton des Neiges
and the Piton de la Fournaise. The trail follows
the footsteps of runaway slaves, giving you a
glimpse of the history of slavery. L’Entre-Deux,
a typical Creole village, offers a number of
original, varied itineraries where you can enjoy
tranquil surroundings, views of Cilaos and the
south of the island.
L’ÉTANG-SALÉ
The Sainte Rose region has a range of short
and long hikes - along cliffs, volcanic trails and
the coast with its abundance of screwpine trees
- that are not too taxing. Unless you decide
to explore the Grand Brûlé, a unique and
exceptional site at the foot of the volcano.
L’Étang-Salé is divided between a black, sandy
beach and a state-owned forest. Whatever
your preference, the region has enough hiking
trails to delight everyone, thanks to its variety of
landscapes. Nearby, the coastal trail which links
the Etang du Gol to Saint-Louis, Le Souffleur
with its rocky coastline, and the ocean sunsets,
are also popular with the small community of
local hikers.

THREE LONG-DISTANCE
FOOT PATHS
With its three long distance foot paths, Reunion Island offers
a range of trails for visitors - kitted out with walking boots
and backpacks - to explore. You can go hiking for several
days along these trails. These itineraries, along marked,
well-maintained trails, are typically based on 6 hours a day
walking. The legendary Piton des Neiges Tour (GRR1) can be
completed in 6 stages, taking in the island’s three cirques and
the Vanilla Island’s highest peak.
The GRR2 long distance trail takes you right across the island
in 12 days while the GRR3, the Cirque of Mafate Tour, can be
completed in 5 stages.

CLIMBING
With its Pitons, Cirques and Remparts, classified as UNESCO world heritage
sites, you’ll encounter no end of exceptional landscapes. From high mountain to
climbing school courses, from basalt cliffs to boulder-strewn gullies, there’s something
for all levels and interests. In Cilaos, the Piton de Sucre and its major climbing
routes (up to 300 metres high) are set against the backdrop of the erupted magma
chamber of the Piton des Neiges. Don’t miss the "Légende des Tropiques," the
multi-pitch route that runs right next to the waterfall at Fleurs Jaunes canyon.
Are you in good shape? If so, head for the Trois Salazes ridge with its three rocky
peaks, or perhaps the Piton des Calumets, in the heart of Mafate, and then the
Cimendef pyramid which translates as, "You can’t go through!" It’s these kinds
of routes, leading along narrow ridges, that make mountaineering in Reunion so
attractive and so special.

Supervised "adventure courses," in the middle of the countryside can be enjoyed by
all age groups throughout the island. Safety procedures and equipment are checked
regularly. In the East, the Niagara waterfall’s Via Ferrata provides a unique
setting. Its cliff face will certainly appeal to fans of vertical drops.
In La Petite France, in the west, and les Makes and Cilaos, in the South, the variety
of landscapes has given rise to three forest tree-top adventure courses. They offer a
number of workshops that will delight all the family. With a Tibetan Bridge that
spans the waterfall, and a zipwire, adventure is very much on the agenda, for novices
and veterans alike!

Reunion Island has long kept its treasures under wraps. This is no longer
the case today! It’s now possible to explore the lava tubes in complete safety.
This special and unique underground world remains very fragile but you can
explore it alongside enthusiastic professionals and specialists who’ll introduce
you to an astonishing natural environment. Certain routes can extend over
kilometres, turning into genuine explorations. Others are more accessible and
involve shorter visits. Kitted out with helmets and head torches, as a family you
can enjoy some fun, life-sized, Natural Science lessons.
The bowels of the earth provide an impressive spectacle with solidified lava
cascades and stalagmites. Reunion Island has turned this into a unique, oneof-a-kind attraction.

ON LAND
In the East, a tour of the ancient volcanic
lake, Grand-Étang, is a great way of exploring
a quite unique site. Discover the local
flora, listen to the birds, pick fruit without
dismounting, all at your own pace: these are
the delights that await you. Around SainteAnne and Bras Canot, your horse will steer
you between orchards of lychee fruit and
fields of sugar cane and pineapples.

GRAND-ÉTANG
HORSE RIDING
Trekking enthusiasts will find something to delight them throughout the island,
whether it’s riding along forest trails, under the shade of filaos trees, over cool
high plateaus, surrounded by volcanic wasteland or across the savanna.
Whether you prefer a beginner’s trek or a bivouac expedition, the equestrian
tourist centres will be delighted to share their love of horses with you.
22
A day’s trek on horse-back to Bourg-Murat,
is a highlight for any horse-riding enthusiast.
The village is located on the outer edges of
the volcano. The trails snake towards the
Plaine des Sables and then lead to the Pas
de Bellecombe. The panoramic view extends
over craters and old lava flows. Other sites,
such as the high plateaus and Notre-Dame
de la Paix also offer spectacular views.
SAINT-PAUL
The vast network of equestrian trails around
Le Maïdo, in the hills of Saint-Paul, look
out across the entire west coast, traversing
forests of highland tamarinds. In the Hauts
de Saint-Leu Forest, visitors can enjoy
glimpses of the ocean in the distant horizon,
interspersed with other exceptional views.
The savanna, in Saint-Paul, bordering the
coast around Cap La Houssaye, is the
perfect place for mastering your three paces
and enjoying some zen moments.
WILD SOUTH
The Wild South certainly lives up to its name.
Horse-trekking takes on a whole new dimension, on the coastal trail from Manapany
to Grand-Anse, along the coast. A detour
via the traditional village of Grand Coude
will certainly surprise you. The fabulous endemic forests of Saint-Philippe and the
coastal scenery in Petite-Ile mean you’ll
never want the adventure to end.
LES MAKES
A trek across Les Makes plateau will lead you
through forests of cryptomerias.
In this South-Westerly region, the trails cut
through diverse, tropical vegetation. Go on a
trek to a traditional, charming village and explore the local farms. Why not treat yourself
to a horse-riding excursion in the middle of
the countryside.

RIVER-BASED
Thrills and chills
Reunion Island boasts an incredible number of rivers, pools and gullies.
Canyoning is a fun way of exploring, and immersing yourself in this landscape, with its internationally
renowned sites. Each corner of the island has something surprising to offer.
The range of activities is vast. You can also enjoy aquatic hiking, rafting, canoe-rafting and kayaking
in some outstanding locations. Water levels are highest during the period between November and April.
Kitted out with special equipment, designed to ensure your comfort, novices and skilled athletes alike can
enjoy descending some of the island’s magnificent rivers, in complete safety.
29
TROU BLANC
Trou Blanc is renowned in Hell-Bourg as Reunion
Island’s canyoning jewel. Located in the Cirque
of Salazie, with its numerous waterfalls, it’s well
known throughout the island for its slides. It’s also
one of the most fun sites and recommended by the
experts. There is water everywhere in this country
which is green all year round. You’ll end your trip on
a 40 m high zipwire, so get ready to jump! Laughter,
happiness and high spirits guaranteed!

RIVER-BASED
TROU DE FER
It takes two days and a genuine expedition to
conquer the Trou de Fer canyon.
Spectacular images of the site are already famous
around the world. A night in a bivouac will leave
you with some unforgettable memories, memories
that are as vast as the vertical drops that characterise this amazing site, surrounded by extraordinary
landscapes. You’ll find yourself in the very heart of
Reunion Island and its primary forest.
CANYONING
Canyoning is the outdoor pursuit par excellence and Reunion Island is the
sport’s most beautiful adventure playground. Swimming, climbing, abseiling,
jumps, slides: the island’s rugged relief provides no end of natural resources.
From the mountainous region of Cilaos to the white waters in the east: the
outdoor courses are accessible all year round but may vary depending on the
season. There’s a huge amount of variety in the forests, with numerous waterfalls
and cliffs. Some, such as the Trou de Fer, now rank amongst the planet’s most
spectacular sites. In Reunion Island, everyone can experience the thrill of
canyoning. Novices, thrill-seekers, fun-lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts,
there’s something for everyone. In this veritable canyoning paradise, the safety
of canyoning routes, and the professionalism of service providers have become
the gold standard.
30
TAKAMAKA
In the east, descending the superb Takamaka, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, is something
you have to experience. Specialists will particularly enjoy the technical component of this extensive
canyon. The wild landscapes of Bras Sec, in the
Saint-Benoit region, are reserved solely for thrill-seekers and fans of huge voids and vertical drops.
CILAOS
The canyons of Gobert, Bras-Rouge and Ferrière,
at the foot of the Piton des Neiges, certainly rival
that of Fleurs Jaunes.
The multitude of slides, jumps and waterfalls
are sure to delight all. Here and there, hot water
springs spurt from the river banks, reminding us
of the country’s thermal origins. In addition to the
amazing colours, there are many more surprises in
store for visitors to the Cirque of Cilaos, a veritable
paradise for canyoning!
31
RIVIÈRE LANGEVIN
The area around Saint-Joseph and the Langevin
river, in the Wild South, is a real delight!
It’s the ideal place to have fun with family and
friends - without fear! "Ti Cap" and "Grain Galet"
canyons, near the Grand-Galet waterfall, offer a
variety of jumps and slides that are perfect for
enjoying the water. Abseiling and zipwires offer a
perfect complement to these sites much loved on
account of their unspoiled and natural beauty.
RIVIÈRE
SAINT-SUZANNE
Sainte-Suzanne, located a stone’s throw from the
coast and the capital, between fields of sugar cane,
is unique in the North-East.
In this island, full of treasures, the site can seem
rather remote to canyoning enthusiasts. But be
wary of appearances! A series of pools, lush vegetation, jumps, abseiling and zipwires conceal a
wonderful surprise - a passage through a lava cave!
RIVER-BASED

FOCUS
"FLEURS JAUNES INTÉGRALE"
in Cilaos, is a jewel amongst the island’s many canyoning sites.
It enjoys an exceptional setting. Should I describe its slides,
its 50 metre abseil, the succession of seven waterfalls and its
"spider-wire" descent extending over nearly 100 metres?
Perhaps you and your family should test out the mini Fleur
Jaunes before attempting the "integrale"... But, most
importantly, be sure to take time to appreciate the amazing
view of the cirque of Cilaos and the Piton des Neiges.

WHITE WATER
White water enthusiasts will be delighted by the range of activities on offer in Reunion Island!
The Rivière des Roches and the Rivière des Marsouins in the East, or the Rivière Langevin
in the Wild South, will be their exclusive playground.
There’s no shortage of jumps, slides and bathing sites amongst the multitude of natural pools.
The main attraction: they’re suitable for all. Learning the ropes, exploring the surroundings
or tackling the extreme, everything’s allowed. Kayaking also has its place here, with both one
and two-seaters available. The Rivière des Marsouins which borders lychee orchards is open
for white water activities all year round. Rafting and Air Boat canyoning are also suitable for
family or active excursions, as the vessels used today are renowned for their stability.
RIVIÈRE DES ROCHES
The Rivière des Roches which forms the border between Bras-Panon and Saint-Benoît is a site
which is particularly popular with fans of aquatic trekking.
The succession of pools, such as Bassin la Mer and Bassin la Paix are a real delight.
The site is suitable for all ability levels.

AT SEA
Flirting with the Indian Ocean
Reunion Island boasts 200 kilometres of land bordered by the ocean and distant horizon.
All aspects of the sea and sea-life converge here.
This wealth of riches means that there’s a whole range of activities available, both family-friendly
and more unusual excursions such as the Natural Marine Reserve’s under water trail, or for the
sporting amongst you, diving and deep-sea fishing.
Now, all that remains is to meet the whales and dolphins!
36
37
On Trou d’Eau beach, at Saline-les-Bains, there is a
special area set aside for Windsurf and Kitesurfing.
Fans of the sport have fun being carried along by the
wind. Near Ravine Blanche, as in Saint-Pierre, they have
developed a technical site where daredevil sportsmen
and woman put on some great, high-level performances.
Boat trips and cruises on the open sea, encounters with whales, dolphins and turtles,
deep-sea fishing, sea kayaking and transparent kayaking, Flyboarding, Kitesurfing,
Stand Up Paddle, aquatic hikes and treks... In Reunion Island there are waterbased activities to suit all tastes. Whether it’s at sea, in the lagoon, along the beaches
and coasts, there’s something for everyone. There are numerous professionals and
a variety of equipment and secure sites available. Whether you’re after a sporty
or friendly, fun experience; whether you want to relax or simply enjoy the spectacle,
there’s everything you need here to enjoy the beach and ocean.
Everyone is free to immerse themselves in their own underwater environment,
throughout the year. Whether you’re young or old, alone or with your family, you can
just follow your heart’s desire!
38
Join an excursion and enjoy a pleasant evening out on
the open sea, admiring the sunset with family or friends.
Another option: sail on a traditional, wooden Norwegian
sailboat, dating back to 1937.
IRT/Serge Gélabert©
WATER-BASED LEISURE
ACTIVITIES
Liveaboard catamarans, the largest measuring 14.3 m
long, are a great way of discovering the island and its
coasts from the ocean; so as soon as the wind permits,
it’s full sail ahead! Take to the open seas to meet dolphins
and whales during whale-watching season!
39
IRT/Studio Lumière©
The still, shallow waters of Ermitage lagoon, extending
as far as Saline-les-Bains, are protected by the coral
reef. Stand Up Paddle has arrived on the scene. It’s a
new activity, suitable for all. Qualified, trained leaders
will teach you the ropes so you can enjoy the delights of
exploring the lagoon.
Whether its a simple outing or a genuine trek, covering
several kilometres along the beach, everyone will find
something to suit their level. Thanks to the transparency
of the water, it’s also a great alternative way of exploring
the wildlife and the environment protected by the Natural
Marine Reserve. In addition to the more traditional sporty
kayaks, transparent kayaks have also arrived on the
beaches of Reunion Island.

In the fish-bearing waters of Reunion Island, deep-sea fishing often results in recordbreaking catches. Marlins weighing in excess of 200 kg are not uncommon. Deepsea fishing can be practised all year round and it’s not uncommon to return to
dock with bream, bonito, marlins, tuna, sailfish etc... There are around thirty fish
aggregating devices (FAD) along the coast. The sea is often calm with a western
zone protected from prevailing winds. One of the region’s main attractions: fishing
spots that are just 20 minutes away and reduced sailing times; this means there is
plenty of scope for organising half-day excursions, which are rare in the world of
deep-sea fishing, and particularly popular amongst novices and groups of friends. In
the South, in Saint-Pierre or in the west, in Saint-Gilles, equipped boats, available
to rent, can be hired for special occasions.

LA POSSESSION
In the bay, on the bottom of the black sand, the only reefs
are those created by the shipwrecked Sea Venture and
the old barge. The area is teaming with shoals of fish and
night dives around the barge make it a very popular destination. Cap La Houssaye, just a stone’s throw away,
is accessible from the shore and suitable for divers of all
levels. With its numerous faults, drops-offs and caves,
it’s the site boasting the richest variety of fish and colour.
Turtles are not uncommon.
SAINT-GILLES
DIVING
The water is warm (between 23° and 29°Celsius) and clear (between 25 and 50 metres) all year
round in Reunion Island! It’s the perfect opportunity to get into the water and enjoy some scuba
diving and the variety of easily accessible diving sites. The most distant sites are no more than
25 minutes away by boat. Sites offer all types of diving, for all ability levels. You can swim with
dolphins, go for an underwater hike or try an introductory dive at a diving centre. Snorkels and
flippers are another way of exploring the lagoon and discovering a large number of the colourful,
tropical aquatic life forms that populate the waters of Reunion Island. Extending over an area
of 35 km2, the Natural Marine Reserve is one of France’s largest marine protected areas.
With 160 varieties of hard coral and 550 species of tropical fish linked to the reserve’s coral
environment, numerous shipwrecks all around the island and amazing underground landscapes,
Reunion Island is worth exploring in depth!
44
Major diving sites in the island. With the Pain de Sucre,
the Cheminée and the Passe de l’Ermitage, Reunion
Island’s underwater landscape certainly rivals that of
its land-based mountains. The Haï Siang shipwreck, a
49 metre lobster fishing boat is a major attraction. And
it’s not the only one. The diversity of fish, off the coast
of Saint-Gilles, is incredible. Moray eels, lobsters, eagle rays, fusiliers, parrot-fish and all types of other fish
congregate there. The Passe de l’Ermitage, which descends to a depth of around 20 metres, is accessible to all.
It’s a green turtle cleaning station.

SAINT-PAUL
SAINT-LEU
The Sec Jaune, the Jardin des Kiosques, the Point au Sel
drop-off, the Arche de Noël, the Deux Arches, the Antonio Lorenzo shipwreck: it’s certainly no coincidence that
Saint-Leu, like Saint-Gilles, is home to numerous diving
centres. There are opportunities for divers of all levels.
Traces of volcanic activity, the clear waters (up to 50
metres), the coral reef and canyons have all contributed
to the area’s reputation. The Pointe au Sel drop-off is the
island’s gold standard for diving excursions.
This 60 metre drop-off is the favourite hunting ground for
pelagic fish.
45
IRT/Louise Canovas©
IRT/Antoine Mettra©
Drops-offs and rocky outcrops, 20-60 m deep, reveal a
dense and varied marine life. Pelagic fish (tuna, sailfish,
sword fish, wahoos, king mackerel), reef fish, groupers,
white gorgonians and scorpion fish can be found here.
It’s a paradise for photographers and biologists.

SAINT-PIERRE
There are numerous diving sites in the South. At SaintPierre and towards the south, you’ll find twenty kilometres of "underwater mountains." The only restrictions are those imposed by the sea which at times is
somewhat changeable. Collapsed lava flows, rocky
peaks separating valleys of sand, faults and fractures,
caves: sites of breath-taking magnitude! At Saint-Pierre:
Dédale, the Grand Tombant, the Tombant aux Ancres,
the orientation trail, Cathedrale, la Galère, Bénitier and
the Trois Arches should all form part of your programme.
You’ll enjoy the beauty of the reef flats around Ravine

REUNION ISLAND’S
NATURAL MARINE RESERVE
It was created in 2007, extending over 35 km2 between
Cap la Houssaye, Saint-Paul and the Roche aux Oiseaux,
in l’Etang-Salé. It protects 80% of the island’s coral massif. More than 3,500 species of animals and plants have
been identified here, including 366 different types of coral, jelly fish and anemones, 530 crustaceans and 1,305
molluscs, starfish, sea urchins and other shellfish.
And to this wealth of riches, you can also add more than
900 species of fish. Of all France’s overseas territories,
Reunion Island is recognised as having one of the highest
levels of recorded biodiversity.

For several years now, the presence of cetaceans around Reunion Island, between the months of
June and October, has made whale and dolphin watching excursions a must. The whales are
easy to spot and willing to approach the island’s shores, which is not the case in most destinations.
Professional organisations have been trained in whale watching and raising awareness about
whale protection and will be delighted to share their knowledge with you.
Although it is possible, and certainly an unforgettable experience, to participate in a whale or
dolphin watching excursion on a hire boat, a catamaran, or cruise boat, such excursions can only
be undertaken if they comply with framework guidelines and conditions for conduct vis à vis the
animals: hence the implementation of a wildlife observation charter which you can consult by
scanning the QRcode. (See cruise providers on page 41). The more adventurous among you may
be lucky enough to observe cetaceans in the water during a underwater trek, adhering to current
regulations and the charter (See diving service providers pages 47-48).
Whale watching mostly takes place on the west coast, between Saint-Paul bay, off the coast of
Saint-Gilles and along the coral reef. Dolphins are present all year round off the island’s coast.

To be included on your itinerary when visiting Reunion Island: the world paragliding
championships! The island is classified as an exceptional site with ideal weather and flying
conditions. Top specialists regularly stop off here, particularly for the World Cup Series
fixtures. The competition allows them to enjoy the rich diversity of landscapes as well as the
joys of flying between land and sea on the other side of the world.
Why not try it yourself, whether you’re interested in learning or enjoying new experiences.
You can simply fly over the lagoon and land on the fine sandy beach. There are very few
destinations in the world that offer such varied landscapes. Take a dual-flight, for a thrilling
introduction to paragliding; you can also learn how to paraglide or improve your paragliding
skills, assisted by enthusiastic instructors.

THE BIG THRILL
Words simply can’t convey the wonders of
flying over the Piton des Neiges summit,
deemed an exceptional site by experienced
paragliders. It’s possible to take off from the
Vanilla Island’s highest peak, which is 3,071
metres above sea level.
And you’ll have certainly earned this pleasure,
after a hike lasting several hours and an
overnight stay in Caverne Dufour gîte.
Sensational and unforgettable are the words
used by those lucky enough to have enjoyed
such an experience, once they’ve landed back

Les Colimaçons is one of the world’s most beautiful paragliding
sites. At 800 m above sea level, the hills of Saint-Leu, with their
uninterrupted view of the west coast, the lagoon and coral reef, are
a unique spot, particularly if you’re lucky enough to see any whales
or dolphins before landing on the sand. Gliding above fields of sugar
cane, Mascarin’s National Botanical Conservatory and Kelonia, the
Marine Turtle Observatory, is an experience that can’t fail to move
you. The thermal currents for which the region is renowned, can
extend the duration of a flight, prolonging the thrilling experience.
Acrobatic and aerobatic paragliding flights are also available. Equally

ANNIVERSARY
OF THE INCLUSION OF "THE PITONS, CIRQUES AND REMPARTS OF REUNION ISLAND"
ON THE WORLD HERITAGE LIST
In August 2010, UNESCO decided to include the "Pitons, cirques
and remparts" of Reunion Island on the list of Natural World
Heritage Sites. These exceptional jewels of the natural world
fully deserve such recognition and include: the unique Piton des
Neiges, the "Roof of the Indian Ocean"; the volcanically active
Piton de La Fournaise; the lush green Cirques of Cilaos, Mafate
and Salazie; the island’s spectacularly beautifully landscapes; its
rich biodiversity; its remarkable flora and natural environments;
its rich and diverse wildlife; and its range of natural phenomena.
The entire site is partitioned by imposing "remparts," which
you can explore during the many wonderful hikes around the
National Park, in the heart of the island. Reunion Island is one of
the world’s essential destinations. A visit to Reunion Island is an
opportunity to explore nature, meet the island’s inhabitants and
learn about their culture, in an environmentally responsible way.
In 2015, Reunion Island was listed as one of the world’s Top 10
eco-friendly destinations.
