University Institute of Graduate Studies
and Research in Health Care – IUFRS
Origin
The IUFRS was created in a context marked by the increasing needs of the population in terms
of health care (aging population, increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and comorbidities,
complexity of mental health problems and sophistication and critical acute care), by a shortage
of health professionals, by higher public expectations about the quality of care as well as by
system pressures to minimize costs, particularly through effective and efficient clinical
practices.
It is to meet these challenges and to participate in the development of specific nursing
knowledge in Switzerland and francophone Europe, that several organizations became
partners to create the IUFRS in 2007. These partners are: the University of Lausanne (UNIL),
the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO), the University
Hospital of Vaud (CHUV), the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG), the University of Geneva,
and the La Source Foundation, The Swiss Association of Nurses. The IUFRS is attached to the
UNIL academically and to the CHUV administratively.
Mission
The IUFRS offers graduate study programs in nursing science (MSc, PhD), participates in
knowledge generation through research and knowledge transfer, ensures linkage between,
training, practice and research, and contributes to the well-being of society by putting safety
and quality of care to patients, families or relatives at the center of its concerns.
Governance
The IUFRS is headed by a UNIL professor in nursing science who works under the
responsibility of a Board of Directors composed of eight members representing the institutions
listed above. The IUFRS director; is attached to the CHUV’s University Department of
Community Health and Medicine.
Education
The primary objective of the IUFRS is to enable nurses from the francophone part of
Switzerland as well as from other francophone countries in Europe and around the world, to
continue their graduate studies in their discipline. To this end, programs for a Master of
Science Degree in Nursing (MSc since 2009) and PhD in Nursing (since 2008) are offered.
Both programs are academically affiliated with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the
UNIL. The MSc is a joint program UNIL - HES-SO which provides the required link with the
Bachelor in Nursing Science delivered by the HES-SO. Thus, seminars are led under the joint
responsibility of UNIL, HES-SO as well as by visiting professors and lecturers from different
universities in Switzerland (ex.: University of Geneva, etc.), or international universities.
Research
In addition to offering these world-class graduate study programs, the IUFRS also develops
nursing research in collaboration with the larger scientific community of health sciences. Three
major areas of clinical research are actually targeted: nursing care for the aging population,
nursing care in the field of mental health and nursing care in context of critical or acute
situations.
Outreach and Partnership
To achieve its goals, the IUFRS can count on a network of scientific and clinical partners.
Partnerships between IUFRS and clinical settings are providing favorable niches to foster
interprofessional collaboration. The IUFRS also ensures inter-institutional collaborations,
especially with the Institute of Nursing Science at University of Basel in Switzerland, as well as
with other universities offering advanced training courses in Europe or elsewhere in the world.
Finally, the IUFRS is a promoting member of the International Secretariat of Nurses of the
Francophone World and an active partner within the Joanna Briggs Institute.
