IACA welcomes the initiatives and decisions taken recently by the Minister of Tourism, Zoheir Garana. Assistant Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou stated in a press article (Daily News, 4 Jan): “the Minister of Tourism has agreed to exempt hotel establishments from tourism promotion fees which the Ministry collects from the hotels to lessen their burdens during the financial crisis”. IACA further received information that Egypt’s Aviation Minister had agreed to reduce landing and take-off fees, as well as ground-handling fees, and to waive them entirely in certain cases. Luc Geens, IACA’s Manager Ground Operations comments: “IACA has established over the years excellent links with the Ministry of Tourism, the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authorities and the Egyptian Airports Company. Egypt is undertaking huge efforts to increase the quality of services and attract additional traffic and tourists by offering interesting incentives to the aviation world. IACA is looking forward to the speedy formalization of the offered incentives, enabling the incorporation of savings into the holiday package prices that will be sold soon”. Luc Geens concluded: “In order to maintain Egypt’s attractiveness for tourism and to cope with the current worldwide economical crisis, it is vital that the Egyptian Government helps the Aviation industry with incentives like those offered today”. We’re looking at several opportunities where we can work together, such as sharing case studies and best practice, to enable the industry in Japan to overcome these difficulties,” says Shahram. “I was also very pleased to meet a number of influential industry stakeholders during my visit to Tokyo, including Mr. Ryuji Funayama, Chairman -Tourism Industry Association of Japan (TIAJ); Mr. Tadatoshi Mamiya, President -JNTO; Mr. Hiromichi Itaya, Executive Vice President -JNTO; Mr. Kaneyuki Ono, Director, Corporate Planning -JNTO; Mr. Toshihiko Tadokoro – Vice President for Tourism Promotion, International Sales Planning and Marketing -JAL; Mr Hideaki Noguchi, President & CEO of Global Marketing & Travel -JTB; Mr. Kosuke Shibata, President of JATA; Mr. Masatsugu Nishiyori, Vice President, Marketing & Sales -ANA and Ms. Takako Koseki, Secretary -PATA Japan Chapter,” he adds. Since the year 2000 holiday autos and Selectair have collaborated to offer the clients of over 100 Selectair travel agencies in Belgium the best possible car rental services. The collaboration between the two companies has always been very gratifying, which is why they will continue to work together for at least the next 2 years. This means that Selectairs travel agents can beneft from holiday autos’ incentive program, by saving kilometers with which they can book presents on www.holidayautosbenelux.com. Furthermore the Selectair travel agents who book many cars via holiday autos have a shot at being treated to an exciting vacation by holiday autos. Last year the Selectair travel agents Joeri Vlamynck from Selectair – Apollo Travel and Patrick De Vos from Selectair – World of Travel were among the winners. Because they had booked loyally with holiday autos they were treated to a well deserved action packed vacation in Lapland. This year’s destination will soon be revealed. Responding to weak demand, especially on international routes, resulting from the global economic slowdown, JAL aims to better match supply to demand by conducting a bold review of its network and flight frequency, whilst continuing to implement its fleet strategy of aircraft downsizing. The airline group is also targeting greater operational efficiency and profitability by increasing the role of two of its lower overhead subsidiaries: JAL Express and J-AIR. In FY2009, JAL Express will start operating on international routes for the first time, and on domestic routes, J-AIR services using the cutting-edge Embraer 170 regional jet will be expanded. 1. International Operations With the aim of improving profitability, the daily service between Osaka (Kansai) and London (Heathrow) will be suspended (already announced on Aug 7, 2008), while flight frequency between Tokyo (Narita) and London (Heathrow) will be doubled from 7 to 14 flights per week. Flight frequency will decrease on three international routes. On the Tokyo – New York route flight frequency will decrease from 14 to 10 flights per week, on the Tokyo – Bangkok from 21 to 14 flights per week, and the Tokyo (Narita) – Seoul (Incheon) from 26 to 25 flights per week. For added convenience, the number of flights for international passengers wishing to connect via Narita onto Osaka or Sapporo will be increased. To improve profitability, seat supply on seven routes will be decreased through aircraft downsizing. For example, the smaller, more fuel efficient 777-200ER will replace the 747-400 currently used on the Tokyo – Sydney route. The airline’s award-winning business class, the JAL Shell Flat Seat, will be introduced onto four more routes: Milan, Mexico, Rome and Vancouver. JAL’s very latest seats in first and business class – the JAL Suite and JAL Shell Flat Neo seat respectively – will be introduced on the Chicago and Los Angeles routes, as will the airline’s new Premium Economy service. JAL Express, which up until now has only operated on Japan domestic routes will also start operating on international routes. This lower overheads JAL Group subsidiary will operate on 3 routes serving between China and Japan. 2. Domestic Operations Through a review of under-performing routes, aircraft renewal and downsizing, the JAL Group aims to improve profitability, and, through increased flight frequency using smaller aircraft, the airline group aims to increase customer convenience. J-AIR operations will be expanded once the lower overhead subsidiary starts using the cutting-edge Embraer 170 regional jet, starting in Feb 2009. 3. Cargo Operations After looking at the demand on each route, JAL has made adjustments to its cargo network in terms of routing, flight frequency and the type of aircraft being operated, once again with the aim of securing profitability. Cargo flights to Manila will be suspended. Through changes to frequency and routings, JAL will start offering five flights a week to both Dalian and Tianjin, increasing the airline’s competitiveness in the northern China region. The airline is currently in talks with Nippon Cargo Airlines regarding code share operations in fiscal year 2009. An announcement will be made when a final decision has been made. Mekong Ministers Pleased with Progress Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) tourism ministers praised the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office’s efforts to accelerate the sub-region’s program of tourism development and marketing. The ministers praised the MTCO for improving coordination in the implementation of the region’s tourism strategy and organizing three seminars in 2008 that were aimed at accelerating implementation of preferred projects under the region’s tourism development plan. The ministers acknowledged the assistance of the French government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in enhancing the MTCO’s financial and technical capacities, and spoke highly of Thailand’s initiative in launching the Mekong Tourism Year 2009-2010. The second meeting of GMS tourism ministers, which took place January 9 within the framework of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in Hanoi, Vietnam, passed a joint declaration on cooperation between the region’s tourism authorities. The declaration noted the GMS’ tourism sector’s continued growth and assured that the sector would stand firm against the fallout from the global financial crisis. The six GMS countries’ tourism ministers affirmed that they would make full use of the sub-region’s infrastructure and improve their co-ordination to promote the development of sustainable tourism in a socially responsible manner. The ministers asked that the GMS Tourism Working Group and MTCO exploit all available resources. MTCO will present in-depth proposals for further development at a conference later this year, and launch a new website for tourism promotion activities at www.exploremekong.org that will complement the trade portal at www.mekongtourism.org.
