Proposition de sujet de thèse 2016 (A remplir par les équipes d'accueil et à retourner à Isabelle HAMMAD : [email protected] MASTER : Ordre de priorité de la proposition(1) : Candidat(e)(1) Nom - Prénom : Date de naissance : Cursus de second cycle (origine, années, mention) : Mention et classement au Master (Xème sur Y) : Sujet de doctorat proposé Intitulé : Sources and processes governing mercury cycling in a changing Arctic Ocean Descriptif : Understanding persistent high levels of mercury (Hg) in arctic biota has been an elusive goal for nearly two decades. Little is known about where exactly inorganic Hg inputs into the Arctic generate the toxic methylmercury (MeHg) form that bioaccumulates to record levels in arctic biota. Arctic coastal sediments, coastal marine waters and surface snow are known sites for MeHg production. Observations on Hg dynamics in seawater, however, have been restricted to the Canadian Archipelago and the Beaufort Sea (<79°N). Our few preliminary data (4 stations) from the 2011 TransArc cruise were the first in the central Arctic Ocean (79 90°N, Figure 1, Heimbürger et al., 2015). Figure 1: Methylmercury (MeHg) profiles in picomoles per litre (pM) at the coastal influenced open water Laptev Sea station (PS78/280:79°N; brown triangles), the open water Amundsen Basin station at the sea ice edge (PS78/273:81°N; red dots), the >75% sea ice covered Makarov Basin station (PS78/245:85°N; green squares), and the permanently sea ice-covered North Pole station (PS78/218:90°N, purple diamonds). The white line indicates the sea ice extent during the time of sampling. The blue line shows the general oceanic circulation of intermediate and Atlantic waters. For this study we developed a new double isotope-dilution MeHg detection method with exceptional precision and lowest detection limit. MeHg maxima occur in the pycnocline waters, although noticeably shallower than in the other oceans (150 m in the Arctic versus roughly 1000 m in the Atlantic). These shallow maxima are probably due to the accumulation of settling biogenic particles slowed down by the strong density barrier of the arctic pycnocline, which in turn will favor their microbial degradation and MeHg production. The shallow MeHg maxima likely result in enhanced biological uptake at the base of the marine food web and may explain the elevated MeHg levels in Arctic wildlife. A much broader description of our mercury research in the arctic can be found in an article in THE CONVERSATION and a RESEARCHGATE blog. Our findings from those first 4 water column Hg species profiles (Heimbürger et al., 2015) have inspired multiple new projects. During the international Arctic GEOTRACES multi-ship survey during summer 2015 (Figure 2) we collected onboard RV Polarstern (TransArc II cruise : 17.08.-14.10.2015) seawater, suspended particles (in situ pumps), phyto-/zooplankton, ice and sediment cores samples for Hg species determination. Figure 2: RV Polarstern and USCGC Healy meet on September 7 2015 at North Pole. © Stefan Hendricks Total mercury was already determined on board (typically 24 depths resolution). MeHg was sampled at all stations (typically 12 depths), analyzed in the laboratory following Heimbürger et al. (2015), and the results were recently presented at the 2016 Ocean Sciences Meeting (Heimbürger et al. 2016). Another Polarstern GEOTRACES cruise at Fram Strait is planned for this summer (GRIFF cruise : 19.7.-9.9. 2016). We will collect high resolution water column profiles, suspended particles (in situ pumps), phyto-/zooplankton, ice and sediment cores to study the influence of North Atlantic water in/outflow, the transpolar drift, the Greenland shelf and glaciers on arctic Hg cycling. In parallel to the oceanographic cruises we sample since 2012 several Siberian Rivers. Today it remains unclear whether the major Hg flux to the Arctic occurs via the atmosphere (AMAP,2011) or Arctic Rivers (Sonke and Heimbürger, 2012). Our rivers observations, especially during spring flood, will contribute to solve this debate. However, our preliminary data show that the river inputs cannot simply be added to the arctic Hg and MeHg budgets (Soerensen et al. 2016). To reconcile open Arctic Ocean with river observations we will focus in the future on the dynamics and processes that may alter the river Hg inputs at the interface along the salinity gradient in the Siberian Estuaries. The PhD student will analyze the samples at the MIO (Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography, AMU) and the PROTEE (PROcessus de Transferts et d'Echanges dans l'Environnement, UTLN) laboratories following previous established and validated methods. S/he will be trained in ultra-trace clean techniques, participate in several field campaigns, help with the validation and interpretation of all acquired data, help with the implementation of the data into numerical models (collaboration U Harvard) and contribute to the publication of our findings. The PhD student will be lead author on at least 2 publications. References: LE Heimbürger, D Cossa, MJA Rijkenberg, G Sarthou, M Rutgers van der Loeff, EM Sunderland, JE Sonke (2016).
