Performance to date in the supervision of doctorates
F. Paulsen is successfully active in different areas of basic research at the ocular surface
and the lacrimal apparatus. He has a strong expertise in the understanding of tear film dynamics and innate immune mechanisms of the ocular surface and tear film. He has been
member of the Dry eye Workshop Study (DEWS) group (International board of 60 scientists)
that published 2007 the Dry Eye Workshop study report and of the Meibomian Gland Workshop group (International board of 40 scientists) that published 2011 the Meibomian Gland
Dysfunction Workshop report. He is a worldwide leading expert in the understanding of dry
eye syndrome pathophysiology as well as tear film physiology, tear film dynamics and tear
outflow mechanisms. These activities are the basis for the supervision of so far successfully
completed Dr. med./Dr. med. dent. Theses.
