Flatiron Wins $176M Design-Build Project in North Carolina
Firestone, Colorado (May 7, 2014) –Flatiron, one of the largest infrastructure contractors in
North America, has secured a contract for the Interstate 73/Piedmont Triad International Airport
project in Greensboro, NC. The $176 million design-build project for owner North Carolina
Department of Transportation will reduce congestion in the area and provide better access to
the busy PTI Airport.
Work includes design and construction of 9.4-miles of four-lane divided freeway with a 46- to 70foot-wide median and three interchanges. The project will run on I-73 from the interchange of
Bryan Boulevard (SR 2085) and Airport Parkway west to the existing NC 68, and then northeast
to US 220 near the Haw River.
The project is part of a planned future extension of I-73 that stretches though the state of North
Carolina, and will provide a much needed connector between NC 68 and US 220 north of
Greensboro. Once complete, the project is expected to improve traffic mobility, encourage
economic growth and help create employment opportunities in the surrounding area.
Flatiron has a 70 percent share in the project, and joint venture partner Blythe Development
Company has a 30 percent share. The project designer is RK&K. The project is scheduled for
completion in 2017.
