Hop Researchers Meet in Poland for Information Exchange
Auf Einladung der Wissenschaftlichen Kommission (WK)
des Internationalen Hopfenbaubüros haben Wissenschaftler der Bayerischen Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft (LfL)
an einer Tagung in Lublin, Polen, teilgenommen. Insgesamt kamen 52 Experten der Hopfen- und Brauwirtschaft
aus 13 Ländern im Namen des internationalen Hopfenpflanzerverbandes zum Informations- und Wissensaustausch zusammen. Organisiert wurde die Tagung von Prof.
Dr. Ewa Solarska von der Universität für Biowissenschaften in Lublin als Gastgeberin und von Dr. Elisabeth Seigner von der LfL als Vorsitzende der WK.
Reges Interesse an der Tagung zeigten neben dem polnischen
Hopfenpflanzerpräsident Jan Madej und Professoren der Universität Lublin auch Politiker der Stadt und Region Lublin
sowie ein Parlamentsabgeordneter mit ihren Grußworten im
Rahmen der Auftaktveranstaltung. Anschließend referierten
die Wissenschaftler während der dreitägigen Veranstaltung
über ihre Arbeiten. Dabei wurden die neuesten Erkenntnisse in
der Hopfenzüchtung, Biotechnologie und Molekularbiologie
sowie Strategien zum Management von Hopfen-Krankheiten
und -schädlingen präsentiert und diskutiert. Große Beachtung
fanden auch die Arbeiten zur Analyse von Hopfeninhaltsstoffen, die nicht nur für die Bierherstellung entscheidend sind,
sondern auch neue alternative Einsatzmöglichkeiten für Hop46

By invitation of the Economic Commission of the International Hop Growers' Convention (IHGC), 52 hops and brewing industry experts from 13 countries attended a meeting in
Lublin Poland, from June 19 to 23, 2011. The meeting was
organized by Prof. Dr. Ewa Solarska of the University of Life
Sciences in Lublin as host and Dr. Elisabeth Seigner of the
Hüll Hop Research Center of the Bavarian State Research
Center for Agriculture (LfL) as chairman of the Economic
Committee.
Nach den ersten Vorträgen versammelten sich die Hopfenexperten vor ihrem
Tagungshotel im Zentrum von Lublin zu einem gemeinsamen Foto. After the

In their welcome speeches during the kick-off event, Polish hop growers' president Jan Madej, professors of Lublin university, politicians of
the city and region of Lublin, and a member of parliament showed their
keen interest in the meeting. During the three-day event, the scientists
held lectures on their work, presenting and discussing the latest
insight in hop breeding, biotechnology, molecular biology, hop disease
and pest management strategies, as well as innovations in production
technology. The presentations on the analysis of hop substances, which
are not only relevant to beer production but also offer new application

stellen. Mit vier Vorträgen und fünf Postern aus allen Themenbereichen leisteten die Forscher des Arbeitsbereiches Hopfen
der LfL einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum wissenschaftlichen
Erfolg dieser Tagung.
Eine Exkursion zum Abschluss der Tagung gab allen Teilnehmern die Möglichkeit, sich eingehend über den Hopfenanbau in Polen zu informieren. Ein Schwerpunkt galt dabei
dem Öko-Hopfenanbau. Insbesondere der Einsatz von
effektiven Mikroorganismen (EM), das sind z. B. Milchsäurebakterien oder Hefen, in Kombination mit Brennnessel-,
Löwenzahn- oder Rainfarn-Extrakten wurde als effektive
Maßnahme zur Kontrolle von Peronospora, Mehltau sowie
von Blattlaus und Spinnmilbe von einem Pflanzer vorgestellt.
Die nächste Tagung der WK wird 2013 in der Ukraine in Kiew stattfinden.
Prof. Dr. Maksym Melnychuk von der National Universität für Bio- undNational University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine) bereitet sich als
neuer Vize-Vorsitzender der WK schon jetzt auf dieses große Event vor. Hier

Committee will be held in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2013. As the new vice-chairman of the
Economic Committee, Prof. Dr. Maksym Melnychuk from the National University of
Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine is already preparing for this great event.

Die Tagung der WK findet auf Initiative des Welthopfenverbandes (IHB) alle zwei Jahre statt und dient dazu, die
internationalen Netzwerke unter den Hopfenexperten weiter auszubauen. Die Forscher zeigen dabei ein breites Spektrum an wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen auf, die zum
Wohle der Hopfen- und Brauwirtschaft genutzt werden

Die Tagung wurde von Hopfenexperten aus aller Welt zum „Fachsimpeln“
und für Fachgespräche genutzt, wie hier im Bild (von links) die slowenische

Research Council und Hopfenexperte bei SAB-Miller, Dr. Florian Weihrauch,

sowie Prof. Anthony Koutoulis, Molekularbiologe der Universität Tasmanien

alternatives for hops in the fields of pharmaceuticals and medicine, also
met with great interest. With four lectures and five posters from all
subject areas, the researchers of the hop workgroup of LfL provided a
significant contribution to the scientific success of this event.
In the evening, the hop experts enjoyed a city tour of Lublin's history,
architecture, and lifestyle, and an aria night with brilliant singers.
An excursion at the end of the meeting gave all participants
opportunity to obtain detailed information on the hop growing
activities in Poland. Attention was drawn especially to ecological
hop growing. One of the growers highlighted the use of effective
microorganisms (EM), e.g. lactic acid bacteria or yeasts, in combination with nettle, dandelion, or tansy extracts, as an effective
measure to control peronospora, mildew, aphids, and spider mites.
The meeting culminated in a festive dinner. The pleasant atmosphere of this event provided an ideal setting for thanking the host
Prof. Ewa Solarska for her excellent event organization on site.
Furthermore, Elisabeth Seigner thanked all hop experts whose lectures, posters, and feedback had helped make this event an all-out
success as well as the sponsors for their financial support. This was
also the right moment to bid farewell to Gerrie Brits, breeder for
SABMiller in South Africa, who was going to retire, and to thank
him cordially on behalf of the Economic Committee for his services
as host of the meeting in South Africa in 2005.
The meeting of the Economic Commission is held every two years
by initiative of the International Hop Growers' Convention
(IHGC). This time, the researchers again featured a wide range of
scientific insight that can be used for the benefit of the hops and
brewing industry. Moreover, the event again helped to further
expand the international networking among the hop experts. With
this event, the Economic Commission set another milestone in line
