The ACCS is a multi-million dollar project funded by various grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC). It is a leading longitudinal study of place that includes four waves of data collection in Brisbane, one wave of data collection in Melbourne, four in-depth case studies of Brisbane neighborhoods and an ethnic community sample of residents from Indian, Vietnamese and Arabic speaking backgrounds in both cities. The ACCS draws on a range of sociological and criminological theories to better understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of community resilience, crime, disorder, and inter-group violence. In this seminar, I discuss the theoretical background that lead to the development of the ACCS and provide an overview of the project methodology. I then highlight the key findings that are emerging from this body of research and note their implications for theory and policy. Biographical note Rebecca Wickes is an ARC Research Fellow in Criminology at the School of Social Science, The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Her research focusses on demographic changes in urban communities and their influence on community regulation, crime and disorder. Dr. Wickes is a co-director of the Australian Community Capacity Study, a multisite, longitudinal study of place.
