This is a paean to San Francisco by a young German woman who spent a year there working and living in one of
the most diverse cities in the United States. It is also referred to the “Gayest” city in America. The book is set-up
like a diary where she not only discusses her personal life but also the life of the city.
San Francisco, never called “Frisco” and “The City” by its’ natives is an unusual place ever for the States.
Geographically, it is located half way up the State of California, on a peninsula located between the Pacific Ocean,
the Golden Gate Estuary and San Francisco Bay. Called the city of hills, like Rome it is built on seven prominent
hills. The roads that run north south are known for their steepness (see the chase scene in “Bullet”).
Johanna is surprised to see that so many of the stereotypes about America were true, and how even more weren’t
true. The most marked difference was the way that Americans are open to friendship so easily and are more “out”

related to dating, apartment hunting and just meeting people.
This is truly a book to be read by ‘foreigners’ who are planning to travel to San Francisco. It will give you a chance
to ‘see’ the difference between how the typical ‘young’ single American lives and how it differs from Europe and
Asia.

|Hanni, a German entrepreneur, jumps at the opportunity to spend a year in San Francisco for her employer, a
dream she always toyed with in the back of her mind. During her yearlong venture she is exposed to American
culture and all the city has to offer. She meets new friends, has a love interest, and a business plan that might
allow her to stay in the city of wonder and achieve the American dream. The book is a month to month synopsis
of what Hanni experiences in San Francisco and the events that take place during each month. I did find it hard to
follow at times with the flash backs and jumping from one undertaking to the next with no defining endpoint. The
characters felt one dimensional to fulfill the point of best friend, roommate, boyfriend, business partner, etc. I
would have liked to see more character development so that when the story ended there was more of an
emotional connection to them and a desire to know where they went from there but as is it was lacking. Overall a
good idea of how to bring sightseeing into a different view and not just as another travel log.|"Beinahe fühlt sich

Hanni Bayers erhält von ihrer Firma das Angebot, ein Jahr in San Francisco zu arbeiten, um den amerikanischen
Markt mit aufzubauen. Da ihre Beziehung zu Hause gerade in die Brüche gegangen ist, nimmt sie das Angebot
gern an, steigt in den Flieger Richtung Westen und beginnt ihr Leben in der "Golden City".

Jedesmal, wenn man eines dieser Bücher aufschlägt und darin versinkt, ist es wie ein kleiner Kurzurlaub. Das Buch
von Hanni Bayers bildet da keine Ausnahme. Gemeinsam mit ihr erkunden wir “The City by the Bay”, lernen neue spannende - Menschen kennen, tauchen ein in den Alltag, der sich doch so sehr von unserem unterscheidet,
erahnen den Hauch von Flower Power, der noch immer in der Stadt zu spüren ist und geniessen mit Hanni den
Californian Way Of Life. Wir bewundern mit ihr den großen Drachen während des Neujahrsfestes in Chinatown, wir
lachen über die merkwürdigen Gestalten beim Bay to Breakers, einem Lauf an dem 75.000 Menschen teilnehmen alle in den merkwürdigsten Kostümen, wir wundern uns mit ihr über die Nackten der Stadt, denn Nudistentum ist
in San Fransico durchaus erlaubt und wir bangen mit ihr, wenn es um ihr kleines Startup Projekt geht.
Hanni Bayers schafft es, ihre Begeisterung für die Stadt und die Menschen darin in jede einzelne Zeile des Buches
zu packen.
Wer schon einmal das Glück hatte, in San Francisco Urlaub zu machen, wird viel wiedererkennen und sich
zurückversetzt fühlen in eine ganz besondere Stadt. Wer noch nicht da war, hat die Gelegenheit vom Sofa aus
dorthin zu reisen. Und diese Reise lohnt sich. Wie Hanni war auch ich begeistert von der Lockerheit der Menschen,
wie einfach es ist, mit ihnen ins Gespräch zu kommen und Freundschaften zu schliessen. Es ist wunderbar zu
sehen, wie dort ganz unterschiedliche Kulturen ihr zu Hause finden. Frühstücken in Amerika, Mittagessen in China
und Abendessen in Italien - in SF gar kein Problem. In vielen Städten in den USA gibt es diese verschiedenen
Länderviertel, doch in keiner herrscht diese Leichtigkeit, diese Entspanntheit. Eine Tatsache, die sicher auf die
Geschichte Friscos zurückzuführen ist und die mit dazu führt, dass sich die Autorin so sehr in ihre neue Heimat
verliebt.
Sie erkundet die Stadt und die Umgebung mit den neu gewonnen Freunden. Sie besucht Parks, fährt die Küste
entlang, entdeckt die besten Restaurants, fährt mit der Cable Car und macht einen Abstecher ins “DotCom Land” –
dem Silicon Valley. Sie ist begeistert mit welchem Optimismus und Enthusiasmus die Menschen hier Ideen
entwickeln und umsetzen – alles ist möglich, wenn man nur will. Es ist ok, Fehler zu machen, nur durch sie wird

Neben den Erzählungen über ihr Leben und ihren Alltag in der Stadt gibt Hanni Bayers dem Leser auch viele Tipps
für die eigene Reise. Nach jedem Kapitel erzählt sie in der Rubrik “Streifzug” von besonders schönen Stellen in der
Stadt, von Festen, die man besucht haben muss und von Ausflugszielen, die auf keiner Reiseroute fehlen sollten.
Aber sie berichtet auch über die Geschichte der Stadt und der Coast of Dreams und wie sich diese noch heute
positiv auf das Leben vor Ort auswirkt.
Gegen Ende der Lektüre möchte eigentlich nur noch seinen Koffer packen und losfliegen und ein größeres
Kompliment für ein Buch wie dieses, gibt es doch kaum.

woman who is living and working there for a year. It shows the city in a more in depth way as Hanni tries to live
and work all while visiting the famous spots. Making friends who know the ins and outs is quite helpful. I liked the
added history blurbs as well. Hanni compares her home country to the differences- food, housing, relationships,
religion, and politics are just a few issues she encounters. The author also interjected these differences with other
Europeans who cross Hanni's path.
