Study Description
Introduction
The Documentation Report of the AUTNES Post Post Election Survey 2009 –
CSES release is a document to accompany and document the data of the
AUTNES questionnaire.
The election in question is the Austrian National Election held on 28 September
2008. The body elected was the National Parliament (Nationalrat).
The Documentation Report is structured in five sections. The Study Description
contains some essential information about the study itself. The section Study
Design informs about coverage, fieldwork, language, sampling procedure,
weighting and other important aspects of the survey design. The third section
contains information about the conditions of use of the data. Next, a List of
Variables is provided, as along with a Codebook for the open questions in the
survey. The Questionnaire in German and English can be found in the last
section.

Study Design
Coverage
The unit of analysis are enfranchised Austrian residents, aged 17+. The total
sample size is 1.203 persons. The AUTNES-dataset also contains 38 noncitizens. A variable (‘citizen’) has been provided to indicate citizenship (Austrian
citizen = 1; not Austrian citizen = 0). This has to be taken into account before
analyzing the data.
Fieldwork
Fieldwork was conducted between 6 May 2009 and 2 July 2009 by ComputerAssisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI).
Language
The survey was conducted in German. The translation of the CSES
questionnaire was carried out by AUTNES researchers.
Sampling Procedure
The sample was drawn using multiple stratification with a clustered address
random procedure:
a. Austria was divided into nine provinces proportional to their population
(age 17 and above)
b. These provinces were then divided in 121 administrative districts, again
proportional to their population,
c. These districts were finally divided in 9 different town sizes.
d. Communities were then randomly selected, and within each community a
PAC (post-certified address code) and then 5 addresses, again randomly.
e. The Kish Method was used to reach younger people in each household.
The sampling frame for stratification is based on census data provided by
Statistics Austria; the selection of households is based on the Austrian
telephone book (Österreichische Post AG).

A demographic sample weight is included (variable A5: ‘Original Weight:
Demographic) that adjusts sample characteristics to those of the population

Data cleaning
The data set was checked for duplication of ID numbers, variable names and
formats, empty records, and logical inconsistencies. Missing values have been
assigned the following values throughout the survey:
88 = Don’t know
99 = No answer
Response Rate
The response rate of the main survey was 75,7%.
Initial sample size 1640 (100%)
Net sample size 1589 (96,9%)
Net sample size 1589 (100,0%)
Non response 386 (24,3%)
Response 1203 (75,5%)
The dataset contains an additional variable indicating the number of contact
attempts (‘contacttry’), i.e. the number of contacts with sample persons.
Interviewers
A total of 78 interviewers were involved in the data collection (43 female, 35
male). The interviewers were trained by the data collector GfK Austria. The
average number of interviews conducted per interviewer was 15.4.
The quality control of interviewers was also carried out GfK Austria. Following
the interviews, GfK contacted 240 (about 20%) of the respondents by
telephone. They were asked to confirm that the interview had been conducted.
Several questions from the survey were then asked again in order to ensure
that the interview had been conducted correctly.

Three questions were asked openly and ex-post coded by the AUTNES staff.
Two questions asked for the most and second most important issue Austria is
facing (Q2a and Q2b). The third question was on the main occupation of the
respondent (D11).

Political Information Item Q24
Question Q24 is designed to evaluate respondents’ general political knowledge.
Respondents were asked for party positions on the policy area of the opening of
the Austrian job market to the new EU member states. Q24a is the answer for
the SPÖ, Q24b the answer for the ÖVP and Q24c the answer for the FPÖ. The
correct answers are 1 for Q24a and Q24b and 2 for Q24c.
Question 24c was very easy (95% of respondents answered correctly);
questions 24a and 24b were more difficult (around 60 per cent answered
correctly).
Household Income D20
The respondents were asked to which income group they belong to. In order to
achieve a higher response rate with this sensitive question, respondents were
presented showcards with the income groups, with each income group was
denominated by a letter. The respondents were asked to tell the interviewer just
the letter of the income group they belong to without having to explicitly tell the
income group.
