RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND TOPICS
My research follows three main lines of development, concerning the literatures in French of the 20th and 21st centuries and
following a critical and theoretical approach.
The first deals with semiotic intertextuality, with special reference to the French and European contexts. The core of my research
consists of the comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of various artistic expressions of the contemporary age, with a special
interest in visual and narrative textualities: the literatures in French of the 20th and 21st centuries; contemporary poetry; visual and
digital culture and the application of scientific theories and philosophy to literature. Among Silvia Riva’s major publications in this
field, a monograph devoted to Byzantium in French Literature (ed. Liana Nissim and Silvia Riva, Sauver Byzance de la barbarie du monde
(Milan: Cisalpino-Monduzzi, 2004, 502 p.) and several essays dedicated to the work of Dominique Fourcade, Yves Bonnefoy and
Pascal Quignard.
The second field of my research aims at re-defining the edges, that are still critically fluid and open, of the literary and cultural
productions of Sub-Saharan Africa through a comparative analysis with other Francophone and Anglophone cultures, especially
from the Antilles, Asia and Europe, and other disciplines (i.e. History and anthropology).
The concept of "réseau" has been fundamental, inter alia, for the definition of a corpus (a terminus a quo and ad quem), the readership
and the public, editorial policies, the circulation of texts. As far as monographic studies on authors or Francophone works, I followed
an approach that emphasizes issues of identity, cultural exchange, and cross-cultural hybridization of forms and genres.
The third is more recent and aims to conciliate the first two lines of research. It deals with World Literature, intended as a discipline
which assumes the global dimension of literary phenomena nowadays. It focuses on the importance of anthological choices, literary
translation and circulation of texts in the edition field and milieu.
