Focus and Preliminary Program
Biopolyesters are high molecular weight biodegradable
and biocompatible polymers synthesized by a wide variety
of microorganisms. Intense research during the past 25
years revealed that these biopolyesters are versatile with
respect to physical and chemical properties and thus may
range from highly crystalline to completely amorphous and
from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Depending on the carbon
source the biopolyesters may contain side chains with
functional groups that are accessible to chemical modifications. Thus, a multitude of applications becomes feasible in engineering, chemistry, and life sciences.
During these two days of the Symposium representatives
from industry and academia will address the following topics:
• Biopolyesters on the market
• Tailored biosynthesis
• Genetical engineering to control polymer composition
• Chemical modification and customizing for industrial
applications
• Medical and pharmaceutical applications

Please note that personal cheques cannot be accepted.
The payments must be net of bank charges. A confirmation will be sent to participants upon receipt of payment of
the registration fee and payment for any accompanying
person wishing to attend the dinner.
Cancellation and Refund
If a written cancellation addressed to the Symposium
office by fax or by mail is received before April 7 a full
refund will be granted, between April 7 and May 1, 50%
will be reimbursed. No refunds can be made after May 1,
2004.
Symposium Dinner
The Symposium dinner will take place in the scenic countryside village Appenzell, www.appenzell.ch.
Call for Abstracts
Scientific contributions to the above mentioned topics are
welcome. The abstract form for the Symposium can be
downloaded from www.empa.ch/ESBP04. The scientific committee will evaluate the abstracts for poster or oral
presentation (please indicate on the abstract form).
The maximum poster size is 90 x 120 cm (width x height).
Poster presentation and discussion will take place during
breaks and in poster sessions. The three best posters will
be awarded at the Symposium dinner.
