Purpose:
•relaxing – mentally stimulating activity
•Music and communication

•In combination with tactile stimulation of a volunteer/ family or other relative –
Agitation reduces
Design:
•Monthly or as much as possible
•30 persons
•Group is a combination of people with dementia and family – contact (example EME
were only people with dementia and some volunteers
•1hour of music
•Multidisciplinary consultation to implementate this project/ musical and social thinking
in the total mentality/ institute

oConsultation in the elderly home or institute: In Luxembourg EME did this in advance
before I came in the view.
We discussed the most important things as:
o space,
ohow many people
oHow to sit
oAn instrument (that is tuned)
oWho? All the different levels of dementia
oAlso family
oThe timing
In Belgium I have a brief consultation after every session with the animation
team/ music therapistes.. To tune and balance the project organisational,
practical and substantive. Is this significant for this person? Does the interuption
is more important then not being there? Is it not better that she sits on the other
side?...
Communication is very important from the start. Afterwords it is still important
always to involve the total institute because you do want to achieve more than a
concert.

oCaregivers: besides the musician there should be at least one caregiver. Better is more
healty people to support and make physical contact.
oRoom: board on the door: do not interup. Curtains closed, nice smell and candle?
oSet-up: half circle, wheelchairs, close to piano/ musician. The musician need to see
everybody
oComfort: transfers, comfortabel chairs
