From the President
On Saturday the 19th September, we celebrated the 57th
Anniversary of the Rhein-Donau Club. It is always a very
happy evening amongst our members and guests.
Now changes are, not only happening in the world, but also
here in Perth in our Club:
We have welcomed a variety of new groups and activities to
our club. The music and language group LaLeLu, for children ages 0-7 years who meet every Friday in the Sports
Hall, are settling in really well.

Once a month a group of men, from Denmark, are meeting
to have the opportunity to speak only Danish and play games as well as partake of the
food and beverages we offer.
The Dutch Club “Neederlandia” is in need of new premises for a period of time to be able
to continue their club activities. Here in the RDC they have found what they need and
the Committee has assisted and supported them in the process of the move. As of January 2016 they will hire the rooms that they need.
Once a month we have the “Motown” group playing 60’s and 70’s music from 7 and 12
inch vinyl records. The evenings are well attended.
On Friday the 11th September, we had the beginning of a new event “Tag der Deutschen
Sprache”, Day of the German Language. It was a wonderful evening, and you can read
about it in this magazine.
All these activities are beneficial to the club and its members.
Our Oktoberfest is nearly here and we are already working hard to make it a great success.
I have taken the position as President for the second time and I am very grateful to have
the support of a good committee. They say it is always easier the second time around!
Report des Präsidentin
Am Samstag den 19. September, feierten wir den 57. Gründungstag des Rhein Donau
Klubs. Es ist immer ein schönen Abend im Kreise aller Mitglieder und Gäste.
Wir sind im Zeitpunkt der vielen Wechsel in der Welt und so auch bei uns hier im Klub.

Unsere Türen sind weiter geöffnet um auch andere Interessen herein zu lassen.
Die Musik und Sprachgruppe LaLeLu für Kinder vom Alter 0-7 Jahren, die jeden Freitag
morgen in der Sport Halle statt findet, hat guten Fuss gefunden und wir wünschen ihr
weiterhin viel Erfolgt.
Einmal im Monat trifft sich eine Gruppe von Dänen, die an diesen Abend nur Dänisch
sprechen, um die Sprache weiter zu fördern und dabei auch von unsere Küche und Bar
Nutz nehmen.
Der Klub „Neederlandia“ im Wembley, hat seit einiger Zeit eine neue Unterkunft gesucht
für seine Mitglieder. Hier im RDC haben sie es passend gefunden und ab Januar 2016
werden sie Wöchentlich verschiedene Räume mieten. Wir im Komitee haben sie unterstützt und ihnen geholfen das der Umzug ohne Schwierigkeiten vor geht.
Einmal im Monat spielt „Motown“ Schallplatten Musik von den 60iger und 70iger Jahren.
Der Abend ist immer gut besucht.
Am Freitag den 11.September, fand die Eröffnung des „Tag der Deutschen Sprache“
statt. Der RDC war der Gastgeber und es war ein wirklich wunderschöner Abend. Weiteres lesen sie hier im Magazine.
So geht es bei uns vorwärts und zum Vorteil unseres Klubs.
Unser Oktoberfest steht vor der Tür und wir sind alle fleissig dabei das es auch in diesem
Jahr ein grosser Erfolg wird.
Den Posten als Präsidentin habe ich jetzt zum zweiten mal angenommen. Man sagt, das
es beim zweiten mal leichter ist, aber das natürlich geht nur mit einem guten Komitee,
und da bin ich dankbar, das es der Fall ist.

From the Secretary
Now in my third year as Secretary, it is worthwhile reflecting on the
changes that have taken place in the running of the Club over many
decades.
I imagine in the early years there were a large number of members
(probably family groups) who would be spending their entire weekends working, decorating, cleaning, building, painting, fixing, organising, accounting, dancing, singing, shooting, and so on. Within this
group there were those who committed time and energy by taking on various roles on
the Committee to see the Club grow and prosper.
Those days are now past (without too much regret?). The subsequent generations have
come and gone either retaining an interest or moving away from the Club and its activities.
What survives is the following. A healthy membership, who attend regular functions on a
weekly or monthly basis. It is heartening to see the work that is needed to maintain the
Club now being carried out by a committed group of helpers, paid or unpaid – in the form
of:The cleaners who leave the premises in a neat and tidy way after every event no matter
how big or small - our gardener who keeps the verges neat and tidy - a dependable and
efficient office staff - a committee dedicated to making the relevant decisions and to keep
order of all manner of undertakings - group leaders willing to participate when called for bar staff who commit to a regular roster - door tickets sellers also.
And in the current times we do not have family groups here every weekend, and way
less than the 1,500 membership of earlier times. So it is gratifying that even on a more
part-time basis there are enough willing helpers to give a hand when needed. No-one is
‘living’ here any more, yet jobs are done by Club members to the best of their ability and
the result is a still healthily functioning Club.
A short anecdote - A young couple from the country (Bruce Rock) who came for the Motown (4th September), were very pleased with the sense of welcome offered to them to
eat, drink and enjoy the environment within the Club. Almost embarrassed by the cheapness of the drinks, they are willing to pay membership in gratitude for the friendly atmosphere and would like to visit on a regular basis. This brief exchange says a lot for our
Club culture.
I look forward to the busy month of Oktoberfest weekends and getting out alive at the
other end!!

Der “Tag der Deutschen Sprache” wurde am Freitag d. 10.FEB. in der Edelweisshalle gebührlich gefeiert. Rund 200 Gäste folgten der offenen Einladung
des Honorarkonsuls der Bundesrepublik, Torsten Ketelsen, der als Schirmherr
der Veranstaltung auch die Eröffnung Rede hielt. Unter den eingeladenen Gästen, die auch als Sprecher fungierten, befanden sich Herr Peter Abetz, MLA,
als Vertreter der Regierung, sowie Fr. Sue Ellery, die die Opposition vertrat.
Weitere Sprecher waren Dr. Susanne Olberg, Kulturreferendarin der Deutschen
Botschaft in Canberra; Dr. Dale Adams, von der Deutsch-Abteilung der Uni. von
WA; Wolfgang Leonhardt, Verein Deutsche Sprache und Radio Deutsche Stunde; Pamela Millar, Gesellschaft für den Australisch-Deutschen Schüleraustausch; Iris Ludewig-Rohwer, Goethe Society WA, sowie Helen Kuehs,
Deutschlehrer-Verband WA.
Die Reden wirkten keineswegs langweilig, denn eine jede brachte andere Fakten und Aspekte über die Deutsche Sprache und wurden reichlich applaudiert.
Die Veranstaltung, bei der es hauptsächlich um den Erhalt und der Verbreitung
der Deutschen Sprache, sowie um deren Säuberung von Anglizismen, ging,
diente auch dazu den “German Round Language Table in WA” aus der Wiege
zu heben. Dieser will sich dafür einsetzen, daß Deutsch in mehr Schulen in WA
unterrichtet wird. Sodann wurden die besten Gedichte von Kindern, die an einem Gedicht-Wettbewerb teilgenommen hatten, ausgezeichnet.
Der offizielle Teil der Veranstaltung endete mit einem Schlußwort in welchem
Torsten Ketelsen noch einmal Sinn
und Zweck der Veranstaltung skizzierte und Marlene Porzig, Präsidentin
des RDC, der in Perth Zentrum deutschen Lebens sei, für die Bereitstellung der Edelweisshalle dankte. Danach ging man zum gemütlichen Teil
über bei gutem Essen und Trinken.

Tag der deutschen Sprache with Wolfgang Leonhardt
O
ur nights, featuring the music of Tamla Motown, Northern, Modern, and
Classic Soul, are just getting better and better with a great following of
regulars and plenty of new faces at every event. We are also becoming known
as" Motown in Myaree", and that means we, and the club, are easily recognised
by people who previously had no knowledge of either. That is great news for us
all.
With the Oktoberfest coming up, we have a few weeks off and we will be back
in November with a line up of four DJ's each playing what we consider to be
"Simply The Best" music in the world, all on 7 and 12 inch vinyl, the way it
should be played.

The Rhein-Donau Club has many talented musicians and it would be great to
have a regular get together. Musicians young and old can share their talents
and ideas in a fun, friendly atmosphere at the club. It would be a great opportunity to revive some of the German oldies and keep up with what’s happening
on the German music scene.

H
i every one, We have just finished 2 postal shoots with the other clubs
from over East and we have, overall, the strongest Group in 3 Grades.
Grade 1 in resting, Grade 2 in resting and free standing.
Grade C congratulations to Cheryl, Mario and Matt, and well done to all our other Shooters that participated.
We are going to be very busy with the Oktoberfest and we need all the help that
we can get.
We will have our group dance on the 21st of November so please remember
that date.

ue to holidays and winter sniffles (“Schnupfen”), the choirs numbers are
low, but we are soldiering on.
We hope to sing at the Anniversary of the Club, because 57 years is quite a mile
stone.
On the 7th of November we will have a Sing-a-long and I am really hoping that
many members and guests will support the choir on that night.

TABLE TENNIS GROUP
W
e have had good attendance each week with everyone enjoying their Table Tennis.
We welcome Chris and Ken back from their three week
trip down the Rhine and Danube Rivers with a stopover in
Singapore. Chris is unable to play tennis due to an injury
and I hope he will be better soon. Ken Manolas has had a
spell in hospital but is back playing again.
Jerry Lee sadly passed away on 3rd August. An excellent player who enjoyed
his Table Tennis. He will be sadly missed. Thank you to all those attending his
very moving Chinese Burial Ceremony. Our deepest Sympathy to Mrs. Lee and
Family.
Recently the State Titles were held in the WATTA Centre and I won a Silver
Medal.
Paul, Jason and I attended the finals which was an excellent night of Table Tennis. Mid October I will be in Caloundra, QLD. I have a friend in McKay and have
been invited to spend 10 days with her. I am really looking forward to the holiday
and will be doing some bushwalking, which I love.

The mighty Liebherr
A locomotive will come out from the roundhouse onto
the turntable. The table will move and line up with a road to the coal stage
where the loco will ‘coal’. After a while the procedure will reverse itself.
Progress is also made on the ‘loading unloading’ tracks.
To speed up the building progress we have engaged one of the mighty
Liebherr construction site tower cranes.
As usual, during the Oktoberfest we should be running Fridays and Saturdays
from 1900 till about 2100 (7pm – 9pm) depending on the attendance. We will
finish the session on Sunday 1st November with Children’s Day, running from
1300 -1630 (1.00pm – 4.30pm).

Edelweiss Dance Group
W
ell, for those of you who didn't make it to the 40th anniversary of our Alpengaudi, you missed a great night. It was wonderful to have so many
past members of the group there to help us celebrate.
On this special night, it was my pleasure to announce that our group unanimously decided to make Karen Sagenschneider and Peter Hansen, honorary
members. At present, Peter is in Denmark so he will receive his certificate at a
later date. Other members were awarded certificates for participating in the
group for various years, ranging from 40yrs to 50yrs.
We had the debut of two new dancers, Jacqui Hoff and Richard Mann. They
performed most admirably and are an asset to our group. Whilst we did our
usual folkdances, we thought we would charge it up a bit and our boys transformed themselves into "beauties.' It was a sight for sore eyes in more ways
than one. The girls also changed into rugged good-looking fellows.
This past week saw the arrival of another new little Schuhplattler. Jasmine and
Daniel welcomed their little bundle of joy, Koby. Congratulations to the first time
parents and also to Bev on her new role as a grandmother.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make the Alpengaudi a success, from
practising hard and performing to decorating and clearing up. An extra special
thanks to Dieter who manned the door and worked hard on the badges and certificates.
And just before I finish,
the entire group wishes a speedy recovery
to Sieglinde who is
recovering from shoulder surgery. We hope
to see you back soon,

WA Mandolin Orchestra
B
y the time this edition is distributed WAMO will just have held their Italian
Fest. On the night the Orchestra played some well known Italian melodies
and supported Eddie Staszak (accordion) and Roberto Balsamo (vocals) on
some more. West Coast Rhythm supplied dance music for the rest of the evening and pasta and vino was enjoyed by all.
Rehearsals for the end of year concert have begun in earnest. This year the
concert will be held at 7.30 pm on the 21st of November at the Church of Resurrection in Swanbourne. A fine acoustic venue.
Continuing the story of the mandolin's history. We are now in the 1920's and
immigration to America has brought many mandolins across the Atlantic. These
roundback mandolins were really too light and sweet in sound for the developing country and western, swing and bluegrass music of America.
The famous Gibson Guitar Co. was founded by Orville Gibson whose designs
followed the carved top and back style of violins and gave better volume and
extended fingerboard range.
The steamed and bent multi piece European roundback was overshadowed by
this new design.
After Orville's demise the Gibson Co's designer Lloyd Loar extended these ideas to the fashioning of the now readily recognisable Bluegrass mandolin with
the scrolls on the head and shoulder.
Most of the mandolins played in WAMO are of the archtop carved design, many
made for us by the West Australian luthier Scott Wise of Margaret River.

is a multilingual music and dance school in Perth
offering singing, music and movement classes in various languages (English, German,
Mandarin, Polish and Spanish) for children age 0 to 7 years old.
Our classes provide an excellent opportunity for children to have contact with another
language. We sing songs, play music games, learn the basic steps to different dances
from around the world and learn to play different Orff instruments. But above all we want
our students to have a lot of fun and additionally learn and improve a different language.
Children discover rhythm, dynamics and tempo of a wide range of music genres from
around the world. In addition we teach our little students some simple steps and dance
movements as visual interpretations of the songs they listen to. Creative exercises and
small craft projects are also part of the program. In older groups children start learning
the tonic sol-fa, music notes and start playing at glockenspiel and recorder.
At LaLeLu Perth we also focus on classical music and composers from different eras and
countries as well as getting to know orchestral instruments. Leading through the classical
to the modern orchestral music we demonstrate the children how the music has developed over time. On the other hand we cover traditional themes from different cultures as
part of our program.
Since January 2015 LaLeLu Perth offers the following classes at Rhein-Donau Club: German, English, bilingual English-German. Mandarin and Spanish classes will start soon.

Our Community Visitors
Scheme is seeking volunteers speaking German,
who are able to commit to
building a friendship with a
German older person living
in aged care facility or at
home who may be lonely or
isolated.
Our program enriches the
quality of elderly peoples
life through regular friendly
visits.
We ask volunteers for 2
hours per fortnight.
This program provides volunteers with the opportunity of making new friendships and we provide orientation training, reimburse
travelling costs and pay for
police clearance.
If you are interested in volunteering please contact
the program coordinator.

ETTER FROM OUR COOK RUEDI:
Luckily I have been able to secure staff for service and kitchen who are
German speaking "Locals" or Permanent Residents now and therefore I do not
have not to employ Backpackers anymore .
As a special treat to you, I have a Guest Chef and his wife from Germany helping me out. Hans Peter and Karola have been 40+ years employed in the Hospitality Industry and are forming an important part of my strategy to have a successful Kitchen operation !
(They will love having the pressure
