Press release from 4th July 2013 Sommer Oper Bamberg 5th European Orchestra and Opera Workshop September 8th October 12th 2013 Don Giovanni coming! The cast – singers and orchestra – of this year’s production of Sommer Oper Bamberg has been chosen. The selection of offspring talents who take part in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni at E.T.A.-Hoffmann-Theatre in October could not be more international and promising – and for the first time a young franconian singer participates: Victoria Kunze (Hirschaid) has been chosen out of over 100 contenders to sing the part of Zerlina. 327 singers altogether had applied for Sommer Oper Bamberg 2013. Bamberg. Till Fabian Weser, conductor and artistic director of Sommer Oper Bamberg, had to travel about 10,000 kilometres, a quarter of the earth’s circumference, in order to assemble an orchestra. He listened to nearly 250 musicians from all over Europe – the 9 auditions took him to Hamburg, Berlin, Salamanca (ES), Linz (AT), Maastricht (NL) et al. This journey resulted in an international orchestra of 35 talented young musicians who were able to convince the jury during their audition. During a short workshop period in September, Weser will have to form a homogeneously sounding body out of these 35 individualists from 14 nations. He is very optimistic and sees a high potential in the musicians selected: Until the premiere on 4th October Mozarts Don Giovanni, which is musically challenging for everybody, is going to sound monolithic. Titel role of Don Giovanni finally assigned after 3 auditions! Several auditions had been scheduled not only for the instrumentalists, but also for the young singers. For the jury it was not only important to win the best voices for SOB13, but also to establish two homogeneous ensembles, which will take turns performing „Don Giovanni“ in October. Not less than 15 opera singers between 21 and 33 years of age are going to work on Mozarts „Don Giovanni“, in a masterclass by Kammersängerin Angelika Kirchschlager, guided by conductor and artistic director Till F. Weser and stage director (and theatre manager) Rainer Lewandowski. „Many of them have fascinating biograhpies “, Weser enthuses about his cast, „but it is important to know that the opera requires experienced singers. Especially the 1
recitatives are extremely challenging for the singers: They have to convey the dramatic as well as the humorous nature of the opera“.
