Upper Franconia - a region sitting halfway between Munich and Berlin and between Frankfurt
and Prague, at the crossroads of trade links between the West and the East since borders to
the Central and Eastern European countries were opened.

Universities in Bamberg and Bayreuth and Universities of Applied Sciences in Coburg
and Hof.

Modern institutes of higher learning offer a top-rate up-to-date academic education in
fields such as economics, business administration and the engineering sciences;
Bayreuth for instance, offers specialized engineering study courses, in
particular in metallurgical sciences, while Bamberg features high-quality instruction in
the fields of computer sciences for business data processing or the automotive
industry studies (this being the only professorship for this subject in Europe).

The Bavarian State Government is currently sponsoring and running a high-tech
initiative which, among other things, includes and features the following projects the
Competenzzentrum für die Nordbayerische Automobilindustrie; (Competence Center
for the North Bavarian Automotive Industry) (CNA) in Bamberg, and the
Kompetenzzentrum Neue Materialien : Verbundwerkstoffe, Werkstoffverbunde
Nordbayern (i.e. Competence Center for New Materials: Composite materials,
materials compounds, in Northern Bavaria) in Bayreuth.

New establishment of a great number of service corporations engaging in supraregional operations, which are now amongst the Regions growth-promoting
performers. Increase in employment figures attained over the last 10 years: 35 %.
