100 CULT GUITARS celebrates 100 remarkable instruments which
have caught the imagination over the years – and confronts the two
paradoxes that make the world of guitars so intriguing. You can learn
the basics of how to play one after just a few hours of practice,
but you need years to master it. And if guitars are easily affordable
contents
when factory-made, some are works of art and sell for astronomical
prices. Guitars are also now part of our culture, and counter-culture,
like no other instrument.

Mustang
A textbook case
F
ender wanted to grab the
attention of budding guitarists
from when they were young.
Being very up to date with
educational practices, the company
unveiled two electric guitars in
1956, presenting them as being
“ideal for beginners, and adults with
small hands”. The single-pickup
version was called the Musicmaster,
and the two-pickup version was
called the Duo-Sonic. These student
models, the cheapest in the Fender
catalogue, were joined by a third
guitar that was a bit more
sophisticated, boasting two pickups
and a tremolo bar. This was the
Mustang, which, like the Jaguar, was
inspired by the automobile world;
and it went on sale in 1964 to great
success. The Mustang was available

in three colors (Dakota Red,
Olympic White, Daphne Blue) and
was sold at an affordable price,
making it very popular with young
people, just in time for the “British
Invasion” of America by rock and
pop acts from the UK. The Mustang
was every bit the equal of the
Fender’s more expensive models,
and was so successful that
production had a hard time keeping
up with demand. Later, in the 1980s
and 1990s, the Mustang, with its
vintage look, became popular with
indie acts such as Pixies, Sonic
Youth, and Nirvana. Kurt Cobain’s
Mustang Competition, from 1969,
can be seen in the mosh-tastic video
for Smells Like Teen Spirit. The very
last model made by Leo Fender,
before he sold his company to CBS
in 1965 for health reasons, was a
Mustang bass. The company is still
in fine form.

D
ean Zelinsky developed a
passion for guitar-making
when he was just nineteen.
Self-taught, his first prototypes
were inspired by Gibson’s Flying V
and Explorer. The young man went
on a couple of public tours of the
Gisbon factory in Kalamazoo and
learned enough from those to set up
his own factory in Evanston, Illinois.
Dean focused on the quality of
finishing, the power of the sound,
and eccentric design.
To help him publicize his
outlandishly shaped models, he
hired some Playboy models for
a risqué marketing campaign.
With its pointed shape
and raw sound, the
Razorback is a 100%
heavy metal beast.
This sexist stance aroused some
controversy but brought Dean
closer to the young generation of
male guitarists. Paradoxically, the
first fans of his guitars came from
serious “Hard FM” bands such as
Kansas or The Doobie Brothers.
However, his eye-catching yet
tuneful guitars also became popular
with heavy metal bands.
Dimebag Darrell began his career
with cult metal band Pantera, and
his first Dean guitar was a present
from his father when he was a
teenager. His legendary midnight
blue Dean ML was the first of the
Dimebag Signature series. His
last design was a variation on the
ML, with an even more aggressive
shape. He named it Razorback.
This axe is equipped with a
Dimebucker pickup specially
designed by Seymour Duncan, the
leader in top-notch winding. Sadly,
Dimebag Darrell was killed by a
mentally unbalanced fan the night
before the Razorback ‘s unveiling in
December 2004.

Starplayer TV
German-born
Duesenberg was
founded in 1986 and
has since forged
an international
reputation, thanks to
its audacious designs.
D
uesenberg was originally a
manufacturer of luxury
automobiles founded by
brothers Frederick and August
Duesenberg in 1913. In the years
preceding the Great Depression, a
Duesenberg was the car of choice
for royalty and Hollywood stars.
Many decades later, German
designer Dieter Gölsdorf
remembered this prestigious name
and chose it for the collection of
guitars he launched in 1986. These
Duesenbergs have a somewhat Art
Deco aesthetic, evoking
comparisons to famous models by
Gretsch and Gibson.
In addition to their elegant, retro
look, Duesenbergs have an original
sound, bold yet rounded, that is
much appreciated by rock bands.
The Starplayer TV is the signature
model, with a semi-hollow body and
a central block for greater sustain.
The soundboard is laminated, with
a single f-shaped sound hole on
the left-hand side. The standard
version is fitted with two pickups:
a Domino P90 in the neck position,
and a Grand Vintage humbucker
in the bridge position. Tremolo
versions are fitted with the excellent
Duesenberg Diamond Deluxe
Tremola designed by Dieter himself.
Available with various features,
perhaps the most famous Starplayer
TV is the one with a mosaic finish
made for Stones guitarist Ron Wood.
Some models are true works of art:
one example is the Duesenberg
Johnny Depp Signature, produced
in a limited edition of just 52, and
decorated with the actor/musician’s
tattoos.

J
ust imagine what American
guitars represented for four
young men from Liverpool who
were crazy about rock ’n’ roll. The
Beatles were doing the rounds of
smoky Hamburg clubs at the time,
playing quite basic instruments. It
was only in late 1960 that John
Lennon bought his first proper
good-quality Made-in-USA guitar –
and brand-new, too!
It was a Rickenbacker 325, which
had been sitting in the store for two
years without a buyer – perhaps
because this three-quarter size,
hollow body guitar with a very short
scale length, no sound holes, and
three pickups was something that
wouldn’t suit a lot of people. But
Lennon loved it, and played virtually
nothing else for the next five years,
both on stage and in the studio at
Abbey Road.
The Rickenbacker had a few
modifications made to it, such
as the fitting of a tremolo arm by
John himself, despite him having
no particular technical skills.
But above all, he painted over its
natural finish to match George
Harrison’s black Gretsch Duo Jet.
With its logo stretched along its
head, the Rickenbacker found
8
itself in the whirl of the media
storm surrounding Beatlemania,
particularly during The Beatles’
1964 performance on the Ed
Sullivan Show, watched by 73
million American viewers.
The Fab Four became total
Rickenbacker fans, whether sixstring, twelve-string, or bass,
sending sales rocketing, to such
an extent the brand might have
been advised to change its name to
“Beatles-backer”!

beat. Sa formation de luthier lui permet
d’imaginer des formes de guitares peu
communes, certainement inspirées
des boîtes à cigares transformées
en instruments de fortune par les
bluesmen déshérités.
Sa guitare rectangulaire fait
sensation, décorée de toutes sortes
de colifichets, d’autocollants ou même
du nouveau signe de paix qui apparaît
dès 1956. Celui que l’on surnomme
« The Originator » met un point
sa partenaire féminine The Duchess.
