Direktor
des
Potsdam-Institut
für
Klimafolgenforschung (PIK) seit dessen Gründung im Jahr 1992. Er ist Vorsitzender
des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats der Bundesregierung Globale Umweltveränderungen
(WBGU) und Mitglied einer Reihe deutscher und internationaler Gremien zur
Forschungspolitik sowie zur Politikberatung in Umwelt- und Entwicklungsfragen. So
berät er als Mitglied der Sachverständigengruppe Energie und Klimawandel auch den
EU-Kommissionspräsidenten José Manuel Barroso. Er ist Professor für Theoretische
Physik an der Universität Potsdam, External Professor am Santa Fe Institute und
gewähltes Mitglied der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, der Deutschen Akademie der
Wissenschaften (Leopoldina), der US National Academy of Sciences, der LeibnizSozietät, der Geological Society of London und der International Research Society
Sigma Xi.
Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber CBE
Hans Joachim Schellnhuber is director of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact
Research since 1992, Professor for Theoretical Physics at Potsdam University and
External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He is a member of numerous national
and international panels for scientific strategies and policy advice on environment &
development matters like the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina),
the US National Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Society and of the Editorial
Boards of several scientific journals like “Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences”. Schellnhuber is Chairman of the German Advisory Council on Global
Change (WBGU) and also a longstanding member of the IPCC. As a member of the
High Level Expert Group he also advises the President of the European Commission,
José Manuel Barroso, on energy and climate change issues. In 2007 he was Chief
Government Advisor on Climate & Related Issues for the German G8-EU twin
presidency.
