Classical:NEXT 2015: Erste Programmdetails und Neuer „Innovation Award“
Rotterdam/Berlin: Classical:NEXT – die weltweit führende Messe für klassische und
zeitgenössische Musik – hat die ersten Programmpunkte für die diesjährige Ausgabe in
Rotterdam, Niederlande, veröffentlicht. Zusätzlich zu der Messe bietet das Fachtreffen eine
breite Palette an Konferenz-Themen sowie unorthodoxe Abendkonzerte (Live Showcases), die
auch dem öffentlichen Publikum zugänglich sein werden.
Eine „Double-Keynote“ mit Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest) und
einer weiteren nocht nicht bekannt gegebenen Schlüsselfigur der Branche wird die
Classical:NEXT am Mittwoch den 20. Mai eröffnen. Ein neuer Programmhöhepunkt ist der
„Classical:NEXT Innovation Award“, der erstmals auf der Abschlussveranstaltung am 23. Mai
2015 vergeben werden wird.
Während der dazwischen liegenden vier Tage sprechen auf der Konferenz Vertreter u.a. von der
Metropolitan Opera, El Sistema, Interlochen Centre for the Arts, Concertgebouw Amsterdam,
Universal / ECM, der Digital Concert Hall, Klassik.TV und viele mehr zu drängenden Themen
wie dem Streaming-Markt, Trends in der Musikvermittlung, strategischem Management für
Orchester, „Experience Marketing“ und neuen Studienergebnissen zu den Klassikhörern von
heute. Abends werden jeweils internationale Showcases Experimente mit neuen
Konzertformaten, Visuals, Mischungen mit Jazz oder Musik aus dem Nahen Osten sowie
spezielle Programme für Kinder präsentieren.
Die Organisatoren von Piranha Arts und ihr lokaler Partner de Doelen – nicht nur das
renommierte Konzerthaus Rotterdams, sondern auch etabliertes Konferenz-Zentrum – werden
während der nächsten Wochen weitere öffentliche Showcases, Konferenz-Sessions sowie das
Programm des Openings einschließlich des ausstehenden zweiten Keynote-Sprechers bekannt
geben.

Preisträger um solche Projekte zu ergänzen. Wie auch die Classical:NEXT selbst, ist der
Innovation Award ein demokratischer Preis, eine Gemeinschaftsinitiative, sowie auch ein „Workin-Progress“. Diese erste Verleihung ist gewissermaßen der Prototyp, eine Beta-Ausgabe. Der
Anfang von etwas Wunderbarem, dass wir in den nächsten Jahren noch ausarbeiten und
erweitern möchten.“
Classical:NEXT Innovation Award – The Community Votes
A completely new item on the Classical:NEXT schedule will be the “Innovation Award”, designed
to place the spotlight on forward-thinking activities taking place around the world. For
Classical:NEXT director Jennifer Dautermann, the new award is a complementary initiative to the
existing industry awards with the goal to raise awareness:

“This award aims to give international recognition to the people who are doing the most to push
things forward with daring yet intelligent, effective and successful “out-of-the-box” thinking,
planning and action. I firmly believe the time has come to add such a distinction to the list of
already existing awards. As with Classical:NEXT itself, the Innovation Award is a democratic,
community effort and a work-in-progress. This first year is a beta-version, a prototype. It will be
just the starting point and we hope to refine and expand it over the coming years.”
The award’s nominees have been selected by a committee of music journalists and bloggers
from 14 countries from Brazil to China, who in their work focus on renewal and trends in classical
music. The list of nominees is to be announced soon. The award winner will be determined this
March via an online vote open to the entire Classical:NEXT community, i.e. the almost 2,000
delegates who have attended any of the first three editions from 2012 to 2014 and are linked via
the online networking platform C:N NET.
This community is likely to grow as, organisers have announced, 2015 has already seen more
early-bird registrations and stand bookings than last year, which saw 900 professional delegates
from 40 countries attend Classical:NEXT.

Live Showcases - Visuals, Audience Involvement and Challenging of Genre
In the evenings, international showcases will feature unorthodox approaches and new formats
ranging from music composed live by audience involvement (Ensemble U:, Estonia) to visual art
accompanying the piano (Marc Tritschler playing Bunita Marcus, USA/Germany) or a blend of
solo performance and sound installation (Zefiro Torna, Belgium). The classical genre will be

challenged in contemporary compositions (Kaleidoscope String Quartet, Switzerland) and recompositions (Uwaga!, Germany) also crossing the borders to jazz or even Middle Eastern
music (Rembrandt Frerichs Trio, The Netherlands). The showcases will further reflect recent
trends such as classical music in comedy (James Rhodes, UK) or special programmes for
children (Cellostorm project, The Netherlands).

Conference Sessions Will Address All Sectors of Classical Music
As in the years before, the 2015 conference sessions were selected from hundreds of proposals
by an independent jury. The sessions announced today (more will be announced soon,
organisers say) address many different issues of the classical world, first of all the study of
today’s audiences and the digital platforms to reach out to them. Pioneers of The Metropolitan
Opera in New York and the Digital Concert Hall in Berlin, amongst others, will discuss the
latest developments in the music streaming market where many pre-selected offers compete
with the established streaming services. Regional focuses on Brazil and Korea proved
successful at last year’s Classical:NEXT. This year network sessions on France and the Middle
East are already confirmed. Curators and presenters will exchange on the topic of late night
music programming or even highly-improvised programmes, another trend will be strategic
management for orchestras ensembles and institutions and educational projects. Highly
interactive sessions promise to map out the future of classical in the long term going as far as to
look into completely different spheres “outside of music to enhance music” as Edgar Barroso,
who will chair a session called “Music for cellists and astronaut”, points out:
“Classical:NEXT is a unique opportunity to seek the spirit of collaboration, the exchange of ideas
and the opening of possibilities.”

Über die Classical:NEXT
Die Classical:NEXT ist das internationale Fachforum für alle Bereiche der Klassik-Branche. Die
Netzwerkveranstaltung umfasst eine Expo und eine Konferenz, des Weiteren ShowcaseKonzerte und Video-Screenings. Veranstalter der Messe ist die Piranha Arts AG aus Berlin
(www.piranha-arts.com), welche seit 1994 jährlich die Musikmesse WOMEX – the World Music
Expo – ausrichtet (www.womex.com). Die Classical:NEXT wurde 2012 von Piranha und CLASS
- Association of Classical Independents in Germany e.V. (www.class-germany.de) ins Leben
gerufen.
