ENKAINA-E-RETOTO (helping hand) c/o K. Armbruster Hohlstrasse 421 8048 Zürich Project: Solar Water Pump for Loiborsoit Concept Version 3.0: March-31-2014 Background The existing water pump driven by a Diesel generator in Loiborsoit TZ serves as the main supply of water for the inhabitants of Loiborsoit TZ during dry periods. 300 to 500 Maasai women cue there daily in order to get 40 to 60 liters of water for their families. The flow rate of the existing water pump is approximately 24,000 liters / day (based on a daily generator operation time of 20h-24h). A cistern with approx. 40,000 liter capacity is also available. The system was installed in 1993 by a Swedish aid organization (SSL). Today the system has to be regarded as obsolete and worn out. The system was out of service for longer periods and had to be revised at several occasions. A replacement of the whole system is necessary within the next future. Idea In the course of a visit of Dario Schwoerer from TOP TO TOP in July 2011 the idea of installing an environmental friendly solar driven system was created. Discussions with the village authorities, the local population and the leaders of SSL confirmed by the end of 2012 that this idea should be realized. In January 2013 the feasibility was discussed with possible project partners from TOP TO TOP and Medici Engineering GmbH. It was decided to initiate the project and it was agreed on the basic concept and layout of the system. Aim The aim of the project is to replace the existing water pump including diesel driven generator in Loiborsoit TZ with a solar driven water pump system. System parameters In a first concept it was the idea, to use a combined solar-battery system that can on one hand supply any standard 230V equipment and also could run a submersible water pump. This system was intended to be based on the Enda Solar solution ESB-6500. However during the project it was decided to start with a smaller investment, as the main focus is on water pumping and not on energy supply. Water pumping can be done with a combination of solar modules, a controller box and a submersible DC-pump: Project Solar Water Pump for Loiborsoit Version 3.0 March-31-2014 Page 2 / 10 Borehole Basic Data The borehole has the following specification: Borehole depth: Static water level: Quantity yield: Total pumping height: 120 m 97 m 2.8 m3/h 114 m Further it was defined, that the requirement is to pump around 20 m3 per day (20’000 Liters) in order to keep at least the current status. Pump Selection and System Engineering It was agreed to use Swiss / European technology in order to guarantee good quality and a longlife cycle. The pump selection and system engineering was done by Enda Solar Ltd. (which is based in Arusha TZ and is operated by Swiss technicians) in coordination with the local supplier Davis & Shirtliff. For the engineering both companies used the software “Compass” from the pump vendor Lorentz. The detail report is attached to this concept (see page 7 - 10). Each string is a combination of 1 x 3S poly 225W + 4 x 3S mono 225W + 3 x Trina poly 260W It will be not optimal to combine different types of modules, but the specification of the modules allows this combination, as their current specifications are almost the same (7.9A at 3S and 8.5A at Trina). It will be necessary to measure the actual voltage and current, once the modules are installed. Mainly it has to be checked, if with the given solar modules, the recommended minimum Voltage for the controller of 238 V can be reached. If the Voltage is too low, the pump will not work in its optimal power range. Then we recommend to buy and install two additional Trina modules. The 5 to 7 members of the committee will be appointed by the project partners and the village of Loiborsoit. Ownership, reimbursement and running costs The complete system will be owned by the community of Loiborsoit after their contribution according to the budget has been made. No further reimbursement is being looked for. The system must be operated in such way, that all running costs, reserves for contingencies and possible future investments can be covered. This means that also in the future pumped water will not be available for free. An appropriate fee that is based on the existing one (e.g. 100TSH for 20 liters) has to be payed by all users. Details regarding the financial topics such as fees for water, payment system (cash, payment in kind, accounting, ….) will be arranged and supervised by the Loiborsoit Water Committee. These details will be fixed in a contract between the community of Loiborsoit and ENKAINA-E-RETOTO on behalf of all remaining stakeholders. This has to be done in a transparent way. Maintenance and operational concept The system shall be operated by the community of Loiborsoit. The administration of Loiborsoit provided already a list with possible suitable candidates for the technical support. The nomination of the person(s) who will be definitely responsible for the system maintenance will be taken on site by the technicians of Enda Solar. Enda Solar together with ENKAINA-E-RETOTO will provide ongoing support of operation, maintenance and consulting. It is proposed that this service will be fixed by a contract. The water supply system can be controlled and monitored directly from Europe, so e.g. running time, water quantities etc. will be known. In addition the system can be switched off and disconnected via remote control from Europe. With this it is possible to apply a certain pressure on the responsible persons to run the system in a proper way: technically as well as operationally and financially. It is planned that the installed solar system initially will provide energy exclusively for the operation of the solar pump. After the successful operation over a certain period (e.g. minimum 1 year) and on basis of the experience made within this time the connection of more users (shops, school, corn mill, ….) to the system and the addition of a battery system will be envisaged as a second step. This will be organized within a separate project. The solar panels donated by Jürg Zahnd (TOP TO TOP) were transported by Urs Ruggli Mat Transport AG, Pratteln. Enkaina-e-retoto financed the shipping costs (included in budget). The panels arrived in March 2014 at Enda Solar close to Arusha TZ and are thus ready for installation. The effective date for completion of installation can be fixed when the following open points are arranged: Funding completed (Markus Heeb, Ulf Haake, Dario Schwoerer, Gabriella Bolliger) Infrastructure available in Loiborsoit (Lengai Salash Ngulik, Barbara Schachenmann) Installation crew on site (Lengai Salash Ngulik, Barbara Schachenmann, John Laswai) Loiborsoit Water Committee nominated (Markus Heeb, Ulf Haake, Lengai Salash Ngulik, village authority) Timetable Action Transport of the solar panels to Tanzania Clarification of borehole details Definition of pump details Distribution of project proposal V1.2 Feedback to project proposal V1.2 Negotiations with community Water pump paid Preparation of infrastructure Distribution of project proposal V2.0 Feedback to project proposal V2.0 Final project description V3.0 Distribution of final project proposal Crowdfunding Funding completed Installation begin Final definition of operational concept, nomination of Loiborsoit Water Committee, signing of contracts Begin of training for technical staff Begin of operation Who Jürg / Alessandro / U.
