Übungen zu Vorlesung Sonne und sonnenähnliche Sterne Hausaufgaben: Abgabe 9. Mai 2016 1.) English: We observe the Sun the whole day from sunrise at 6 o’clock in the morning until sunset at 8 o’clock in the evening. You take one radialvelocity measurement per minute. What is the lowest frequency that you can detect? 2.) English: You observe all l and m modes from l=1 to l=100. How many modes are these? 3.) English: Your observation of a star shows that the maximum of the oscillations are at a period of 655.73 seconds. You have spectroscopically determined that the effective temperature of that star to 5777 K, and you have interferometrically determined that it has a radius of 4 solar radii. What is the mass of the star? 4.) English: You observe the same star from sunset at 8 o’clock in the evening until sunrise at 6 o’ clock in the morning. Assume that your temperature and radius determination are perfect. What is he error in the mass determination? Spassaufgabe: Louder than hell? Joke exercise: Louder than hell? I personally do not know how loud it is in hell but we can calculate how loud it is on the Sun. According to studies of Ulmschneider, the total acoustic power at the upper end of the convection zone of the Sun is about 6 1022 W. Compare the acoustic flux-density [Wm-2] (say, “the noise”) at the upper end of the convection zone with what is required to heat the Corona of the Sun to its million degrees temperature (you may call a place that hot “hell“ if you like), which is of the order of 100 Wm-2. Now, compare the acoustic flux density needed to heat the Corona with that of the „Epica“ (certainly not “noise”) concert in Eindhoven. In this concert a total power of 92800W was emitted in to the „Klokgebouw“ which is roughly 40m wide, 50m long, and 9m high. What conclusions can you draw from this? Particularly what conclusions do you draw in respect to the possible heating mechanisms of the Corona of the Sun?
