Hachar Trust helps 431 scholars pursue education goals
Times staff reports
A total of 431 Laredo and
area collegians are pursuing
higher education in Laredo,
in Texas and other campuses in the U.S. through the
generosity of the D.D.
Hachar Charitable Trust
Fund.
For the academic year
2003-2004, the Hachar Trust
Fund has awarded $748,900
to help young men and
women attending colleges
and universities in Texas
and elsewhere in the U. S.
The scholars include 100
local high school graduates
chosen for individual $3,000
scholarships to attend Texas
A&M
International
University. Another 331 students are the beneficiaries
of $448,000 in scholarships
for the current academic
year, according to Vidal M.
Treviño, executive director
for
the
D.D.
Hachar
Charitable Trust Fund at the
Laredo National Bank. The
Trust Department of LNB
administers the fund.
Since its inception, the
Hachar Charitable Trust
Fund has provided financial
assistance to thousands of
Laredo high school graduates from public and private
high schools.
Treviño said LNB has the
oldest trust department in
Laredo. An independently
appointed advisory committee manages the trust.
“Nothing gives all of us
associated with the foundation more pleasure than to
see hundreds of students
each year awarded scholarships to attend the college or
university of their choice,”
Gary G. Jacobs, LNB president and CEO, said.
Members of the advisory
committee are Jacobs,
chairman, Dr. Joaquin G.
Cigarroa
Jr.
Alejandro
Cabezut and Dr. Dennis
Cantu.
Cigarroa formerly served
on the boards of the Laredo
Independent School District
and Laredo Community
College (Laredo Junior
College, and did a stint on
the State Commission for
Colleges and Universities
(higher education). Cantu is
president of the LISD board
of trustees.
The bank Trust Committee
includes
C.
Edward
Whitworth, chairman, Peter
R. Arguindegui Jr., Luis
Lidsky, J.C. Martin III,
Renato Zapata Jr., and
Joaquin Romero Jr.
Whitworth pointed out that
the D. D. Hachar scholars
are enrolled in 47 different
colleges and universities.
The schools include Cornell
University, Duke University,
Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), Stanford
University, University of
Denver, University of Notre
Dame, Yale University,
Georgetown University, and
Princeton University.
“We want students to
remain in school, get good
grades and work with their
senior counselors to apply
for a D.D. Hachar scholarship to pursue degrees at
the colleges and universities
of their choice,” Romero,
head of the LNB Trust
Department, said.
Romero said college students can get information
and application from the
D.D. Hachar Charitable
Trust office at 914 Hidalgo in
December.
According to Romero,
applicants must be in need
of financial assistance and
attend an accredited college/university. Scholarship
recipients must be enrolled
full-time
(12
semester
hours), be bonafide Laredo
residents (Webb County),
indicate ability to satisfy college minimum requirements
and maintain cumulative
grade point averages of 2.25
or above as freshmen, 2.50
or above as sophomores;
and 2.75 or above as
juniors, and seniors.
Graduating high school
seniors are encouraged to
visit with their school counselors to determine qualifications. Lisa Menchaca,
Hachar
fund
assistant
account administrator, is
available at the Hachar Trust
office to provide additional
information.
“It was the desire of
Demetrio David Hachar to
help the young people of
Laredo and surrounding
area achieve the highest
possible level of education,”
Jacobs said.
Hachar, a successful businessman, accumulated a
fortune in Laredo and left
most of his fortune to help
Laredo’s young people seek
a college education. To that
end he established the D.D.
Hachar Charitable Trust
Fund.
Treviño said the $300,000
awarded to TAMIU students
goes to students participating in the D.D. Hachar
Honors Program at Texas
A&M
International
University.
Treviño said the scholarships awarded high school
graduates for undergraduate
students are renewable as
long as the scholars maintained their grades.
