A word from your president

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, I wish you a
Happy 2013 New Year. I hope that the Holiday Season with your
family and friends was enjoyable and was filled with great
moments.
For Ayrshire Canada, 2013 signifies a year of challenges. We are
still looking for a General Manager. Also, after many dedicated
years to the Ayrshire breed, our Registrar, Members Services
Officer, and Review Editor-in-Chief Jenny Henchoz will be leaving
her position with the Association on March 29th. We wish her well
in her future endeavours.
The beginning of the year also signifies the Annual General
Meeting. This major event, which is coming soon, exists to offer
every member the opportunity to express his or her ideas and opinions just like in the provincial Meetings. Complete information
regarding the National Meeting can be found in this edition of the
Review. People involved in the organisation of the event have
been working hard over the last several weeks and your presence would be their biggest reward. The Association’s image stems
from its members, so show everyone how dynamic and strong the
Ayrshire Association is and how proud of it its members are.
Au nom du conseil d’administration et en mon nom personnel,
nous vous souhaitons une bonne année 2013. J’espère que le temps
des Fêtes avec votre famille et vos amis fut agréable et vous a procuré de bons moments.
Pour Ayrshire Canada, l’année 2013 signifie une année de défis.
Nous sommes toujours à la recherche d’un(e) directeur(trice) général(e). Également, après plusieurs années de dévouement à la race
Ayrshire, notre registraire, responsable du service aux membres et
rédactrice en chef de la Revue, Jenny Henchoz quittera son emploi
à l’Association le 29 mars prochain. Nous lui souhaitons la meilleure des chances dans ses projets futurs.
Le début d’année signifie également Assemblée Annuelle. Cet événement majeur, qui arrivera à grands pas, existe afin que chaque
membre ait l’opportunité de s’exprimer et de donner ses idées et
opinions tout comme les assemblées provinciales. Vous trouverez
tous les détails relatifs à l’Assemblée Nationale dans cette édition de
la revue. Les gens impliqués dans l’organisation de cet événement
travaillent fort depuis plusieurs semaines et la plus grande récompense pour eux sera votre présence. L’image de l’Association part
de ses membres alors, démontrez à tous que l’Association Ayrshire
en est une dynamique et forte et que ses membres en sont fiers.
As you all know, the dairy industry is changing. The number of
enterprises is decreasing, and we must be vigilant about revenues
and expenses. We must centralize and regroup our strengths and
so, with this in mind, we have initiated discussions with Ayrshire
Québec to evaluate the various possible options to work in partnership.
L’industrie laitière est en plein changement, comme vous le savez
tous. Le nombre d’entreprises diminue, et nous devons être vigilant
au niveau des revenus et dépenses. Nous devons centraliser et
regrouper nos forces et c’est dans cette optique que nous avons
entamé des discussions avec Ayrshire Québec afin d’évaluer les différentes avenues possibles pour que nous fassions du travail en
partenariat.
To end on a positive note, we have added 69 new members to the
Association in 2012. These new members are the fruit of the
labour of motivated breeders who have the progress of the
Ayrshire breed at heart.
Pour terminer sur une note positive, nous comptons pour l’année
2012, 69 nouveaux membres à l’Association. Ces nouveaux
membres sont le fruit du travail d’éleveurs motivés qui ont à cœur
l’avancement de la Ayrshire.
Until we meet at the Annual General Meeting, or at your provincial Annual General Meeting, I wish you all a great end to your
Winter.

2012 All-Canadian Contest
Concours Toute-Canadienne 2012
The office received a total of 134 registrations for the 2012 AllCanadian Contest. Thanks to all the breeders who forwarded their
registrations.
Un total de 134 inscriptions sont parvenues au bureau pour le
concours Toute-Canadienne 2012. Merci à tous les éleveurs qui ont
envoyé leurs inscriptions.
Once again this year, we were able to admire the quality of our
Ayrshire cows at the various agricultural exhibitions across the country. Congratulations to those who, by the sustained efforts and passion
they demonstrate when showing their animals, contribute tremendously to the promotion of our race.
Encore une fois cette année, nous avons pu admirer la qualité de nos
Ayrshires aux différentes expositions agricoles au pays. Félicitations à
tous ceux qui par leurs efforts soutenus et par la passion qu’ils démontrent à présenter leurs animaux font une excellente promotion pour
notre race.
Four new classes were added to the 2012 Contest: Summer Calf,
Progeny of Dam, Junior and Senior Breeders’ Herd.
Quatre nouvelles classes se sont ajoutées au concours 2012, soit :
génisse d’été, progéniture de mère, troupeau d’éleveur junior et troupeau d’éleveur sénior.
Sincere congratulations to all of those who registered their animals and
more particularly to those who obtained nominations.
I would also like to thank our 5 judges for this year: François Beaudry,
judge at the International Dairy Showcase; Brian Carscadden, judge at
the Toronto Royal; Richard Lagacé, judge at the Expo Quebec; Jason
Ness, judge at the Metcalfe Fair in Eastern Ontario; and Darryl Smith,
judge in Charlottetown in the Maritimes.

Canadian Ayrshires are entering one the largest dairy cow populations
in the world via embryos. Through the support of Ayrshire Canada and
its breeders, a lot of 50 embryos will be
provided to Brazilian official authorities
for a project that will evaluate the full
potential of the breed in that country.
This opportunity became possible
thanks to Dr. Araken Figueira
Rodrigues, a Brazilian travelling in
Canada, who seeing Ayrshires for the
first time admired them greatly and realized that the breed could suit well for
Brazil. Mr. Rodrigues contacted
PESAGRO-RIO in Brazil and assisted the
communications between them and
Ayrshire
Canada.
Trans-America
Genetics, and its Brazilian distributor, TAG do Brasil, will facilitate the
export and import process as well as the exchange of information.

In December 2011, Ayrshire Canada agreed to participate in a project
that would permit the breed to enter the Brazilian dairy market. The
project is sponsored by the government of the Rio de Janeiro state
through one of its dairy research programs called Rio Leite (Rio-Milk).
The objectives from the Brazilian side are to find new assets that would
help increase volume of dairy production. The Ayrshire breed presents
great advantages for dairy producers in South America. Her rusticity,
higher fertility than most European breeds, higher protein production
and her overall efficiency makes Ayrshires very attractive to these markets.

pour les producteurs laitiers de l’Amérique du Sud. Son côté rustique,
sa plus grande fertilité comparée aux races européennes, sa plus grande
production de protéines et son rendement global la rendent très
attrayante pour ces marchés.
For the purpose of this project, the Ayrshire breed would be introduced
via embryos from Canada and implanted in Brazil at one of the research
farms. The offspring will then be raised in the normal farm environment.
The resistance to disease, climate and also the ability to convert feed
efficiently will be some of the key analysis that will be observed early
on. Then, the ability to turn into producing cows and provide high quality milk in quantities comparative to a normal Brazilian cow will be
observed and monitored. The research findings will be shared with the
Canadian Ayrshire Association.
Dans le cadre de ce projet, la race Ayrshire serait introduite via des
embryons provenant du Canada et qui seraient implantés au Brésil dans
une de leurs fermes de recherche. La progéniture sera ensuite élevée
dans un environnement de ferme traditionnel. La résistance aux maladies, le climat et la capacité à convertir efficacement la nourriture composent certains des facteurs essentiels qui seront analysés dès le début.
Par la suite, on observera et surveillera la capacité de cette progéniture
à devenir des vaches productives et à fournir un lait de grande qualité
dans des quantités comparables aux vaches brésiliennes régulières. Les
résultats de la recherche seront partagés avec l’association canadienne
Ayrshire.

With one of the largest habitant populations in the world,
and growing rapidly, Brazilian
National and State public programs are putting in place
numerous agricultural projects
to achieve rapid growth in
food production. The first
objective is to reach sustainability, and the second, to
develop export markets. In
the last decade, Brazilian agricultural has gained a significant place in the world by
becoming
the
largest
exporters/producers for corn,
soya beans and meat (carcasses: beef, swine and poultry). It
is important to note that the
figures from the UN’s Food
and Agriculture Organisation
(FAO) demonstrate that Brazil
still has over 75% of its potential farmland available for production. Let’s imagine the
future growth… needless to
say, the agriculture business is
in the fast lane and will stay there for many years to come.
From the necessary 50 embryos to get the project started, about 25 of
them have been identified and graciously donated by Canadian Ayrshire
breeders at this point. The embryo shipment out of Canada is due to
leave within the next few months.
Normally, the opportunity to introduce a new breed into a new market
would be extremely costly for an association. Just consider the time that
would be invested and the resources necessary for market research,
market development and travel. It would be very costly, without any
guarantee of success. Entering a country with 23 million dairy cows is a
fantastic opportunity. To be able to do it in an official manner and
through government will increase the potential for success, its visibility,
propaganda and the Association will get research studies done on the
breed at no cost. The board of Directors of Ayrshire Canada are visionaries and see the future through this project.

L’objectif premier est le développement durable et le

Au cours de la dernière décennie, les agriculteurs
brésiliens se sont grandement imposés à travers le
monde en devenant les plus grands exportateurs/producteurs de maïs, de graines de soja et de viande (carcasses : bœuf, porc et volaille). Il est important de noter
que, selon les données fournies par l’Organisation des
Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO),
plus de 75% des terres agricoles potentiellement cultivables du Brésil n’ont pas encore été exploitées.
Imaginons un instant la croissance future… Il va s’en
dire que l’industrie agricole se développe à vive allure
et continuera de le faire pour plusieurs années.
Des 50 embryons requis pour débuter le projet, environ 25
à ce jour ont été identifiés et gracieusement donnés par des
éleveurs Ayrshire canadiens. L’envoi des embryons pour
l’étranger est prévu pour les prochains mois.
Normalement, l’opportunité d’introduire une nouvelle
race au sein d’un nouveau marché s’avère extrêmement
coûteuse pour une association. Imaginez simplement le
temps investi dans et les ressources nécessaires pour l’étude de marché,
le développement du marché et le voyagement. Le tout serait très dispendieux et ce, sans aucune garantie de succès. Intégrer un pays comptant 23 millions de vaches laitières est une opportunité fantastique.
D’être capable de le faire de façon officielle et avec le soutien du gouvernement augmentera nos chances de réussite, notre visibilité et notre

ALLAN BARR
Last August, a great man from the breed passed away: the Late Mr.
Allan Barr. Mr. Felipe Calderon from Columbia wished to pay one last
tribute to this man whom he cared very much about and who so
proudly represented the Ayrshire World throughout his life. Here is his
story.
I first met Allan Barr at the 1984 Toronto Royal Agricultural Winter
Fair. I attended this prestigious show with friends who wanted to
import Ayrshire cows to Columbia and who needed some advice in
order to accomplish this mission.
We had looked at and analyzed Ayrshire cows and what had most
impressed us from these red and white cows were their horns. Allan
was present, but we did not know who this breeder was. We had
taken the liberty to ask him a few questions to learn more about this
breed and he had answered with great reliability and honesty, and his
explanations had finally convinced us that the Ayrshire was the best
breed to export back to our country.
The following year, we travelled to Montreal, Québec to choose our
animals. Allan Barr and Denis Descoteaux were waiting for us upon
arrival, assigned by the Ayrshire Association of Canada to assist us
through our selection process and to tour Ayrshire breeders’ farms.
This is how Allan and I became very close friends. We visited numerous farms and when we finally arrived at his, the well-known
Woodland View Farm, I was able to see and appreciate how special
these cows were. They were tall and deep, and many were of exceptional show caliber. I got acquainted with East River Daisy’s Last 8M,
EX94 5E, the renowned Ayrshire who was crowned Grand Champion
in 1984-1985 and in 1988 at the World Dairy Expo in Madison,
Wisconsin as well as with Da-Ve Ayr Andrea EX 92 3E who was also
later crowned Grand Champion in Madison in 1987.
Allan had a sharp eye for finding the perfect cow. He had the ability
to buy them and turn them into show winners. No other cows in
North America were more honoured in shows than his, having collected numerous Grand Champions titles throughout the entire North

En août dernier, un grand homme de la race nous a quitté soit
Monsieur Allan Barr et, Monsieur Felipe Calderon de la Colombie,
tenait à rendre un dernier hommage à cet homme auquel il tenait
beaucoup et qui a si fièrement représenté le monde Ayrshire au cours
de sa vie. Voici son témoignage.
J’ai rencontré Allan Barr à la Foire Royale d’hiver de l’agriculture de
Toronto en 1984. J’étais allé à cette prestigieuse exposition avec des
amis qui voulaient importés des Ayrshire en Colombie et qui avaient
besoin de conseils afin de réussir cette mission.
Nous avons regardé et analysé les Ayrshire et, ce qui nous avaient le
plus impressionné de ces vaches rouge et blanche, était leurs cornes.
Allan était présent, mais nous ne savions pas qui était cet éleveur.
Nous nous étions permis de lui poser quelques questions afin d’en
connaître plus sur la race et il nous avait répondu avec beaucoup de
sérieux et d’honnêteté et ses explications nous avaient convaincu que
la Ayrshire était la bonne race à exporter dans notre pays.
Nous sommes allés à Montréal, dans la province de Québec l’année
suivante afin de choisir nos animaux. Allan Barr et Denis Descoteaux
étaient présents à notre arrivée, assignés par l’Association Ayrshire du
Canada afin de nous aider à faire la sélection des animaux et nous
faire visiter des fermes d’éleveurs Ayrshire.
C’est de cette façon qu’Allan et moi-même sommes devenus des amis
très proches. Nous nous sommes promenés dans de nombreuses fermes et lorsque nous sommes arrivés; à la sienne, la bien connue
Woodland View Farm, j’ai été en mesure de voir et comprendre combien spéciales étaient ces vaches. Elles étaient grandes et profondes,
et plusieurs étaient des vaches de calibre d’expositions. J’ai fait la connaissance de East River Daisy’s Last 8M, EX 94 5E, la fameuse Ayrshire

doing everything in his power to save this cow and had shared with
me that she had the potential to become the future Grand Champion
at Madison’s. She indeed accomplished this feat the very same year as
well as in 1990 and 1994.

Malheureusement, elle attrapa une mammite lors de l’exposition. Très
inquiet, Allan faisait tout le nécessaire pour sauver sa vache et me
mentionna que pour lui, cette vache avait le potentiel d’être la future
Championne à Madison. Elle réalisa cet exploit cette même année
ainsi qu’en 1990 et en 1994.
It was with great pleasure that I travelled to Madison and watched Mr.
Barr win on several occasions. The Québec Team, with 13 or 14 animals, was winning it all at the World Dairy Expo. No one in the
Ayrshire World brought back home from Madison more “Grand
Champion” rosettes than him.
Ce fut un immense plaisir pour moi de voyager à Madison et de voir
monsieur Barr gagner à plusieurs reprises. L’équipe du Québec, avec
13 ou 14 animaux remportait tout à l’Exposition laitière Mondiale.
Personne dans le monde Ayrshire n’a jamais autant ramené de rosettes
de « Grande championne » de Madison à la maison que lui.
I had the priviledge to join a syndicate during the Spring Show to purchase Vieux Village Jade Star ET, EX 91 with Allan. This cow won the
grand honours in Madison in 1998. Her daughter, Woodland View
Natural 2 ET, was Grand Champion at the Spring Show in 2001 and
Reserve Grand Champion at the Royal in 2000.
J’ai été chanceux de pouvoir me joindre à un syndicat fait lors d’une
édition de l’Expo Printemps afin d’acquérir Vieux Village Jade Star ET,
EX 91 avec Allan. Elle gagna les honneurs à Madison en 1998. Sa fille,
Woodland View Natural 2 ET fut Grande Championne à l’Expo
Printemps en 2001 et Réserve Grande Championne à la Royale en
2000.
We shared some great toys. I only saw him lose once. With genuine
honesty, he simply said: “I made a mistake with the hours of milk put
in this cow.”
Allan could have easily been pretentious given his numerous successes, but being humble and down-to-earth, he would accept his
awards very naturally, genuinely. On his record, the only prize missing was the Madison Supreme Grand Champion, a prize he also coveted. His secret for success was that two heads were always better
than one.
Allan came twice to Columbia to act as the judge for the Agri Expo,
in 1989 and 10 years later. On his last trip, he came accompanied by
Mr. Bob Tolhurst who took a picture of him with a monkey we owned
at home. The monkey had climbed on his head and this now-famous
picture was published in the Canadian Review. This moment is one
of my fondest memories with Allan.
I had the priviledge to travel to South Africa with these two men in
2000 where we had the opportunity of having a great trip in this wonderful country. A few years later, he took a vacation in Columbia with
Bobby Clark, the grandson of this great friend James, during which he
had a great time.
I would often phone him from Bogota saying “Mr. Barr, how are you?”
and he would undoubtedly recognize me. He never complained and
everything was always going well. Last year, he asked me to join him
in Madison. Curtis, his son, was to take care of him. He was very
proud of his son and glad to see that he loved cows. I wanted to
return to Africa with Allan to attend the World Conference, but his
health did not give us this opportunity.
Allan was an exceptional man, a great friend, my “Man” in Canada. I
hope that God keeps him in his Kingdom, with his cows and his
friends.
My sincere condolences to his children, Greg, Curtis, and Nathalie,
and his life partner and friend, James Clark.
Allan Barr
Nous avons partagé des beaux jouets. Je l’ai uniquement vu perdre
une fois. Avec sa simple honnêteté, il me dit : ‘’Je me suis trompé dans
les heures de lait mise dans cette vache’’.
Allan aurait très bien pu être un homme prétentieux avec ses nombreuses victoires, mais étant humble et simple, il prenait ses trophées
comme quelque chose de naturelle pour lui. À son palmarès, il ne lui
manquait uniquement que la Grande Championne Suprême de
Madison, prix qu’il a toujours convoité. . Pour lui, le secret de sa réussite était que deux têtes pensaient plus qu’une seule.
Allan est venu à titre de juge à l’Agro Expo en Colombie 2 fois, soit
en 1989 et 10 ans plus tard. Lors de son dernier passage, il fut accompagné de monsieur Bob Tolhurst. Ce dernier prit une photo d’Allan
accompagné d’un singe que nous possédions à la maison. Le singe
monta sur sa tête, et cette photo devenue fameuse fut publiée dans
la Revue Canadienne. Ce moment figure parmi mes meilleurs souvenirs d’Allan.
J’ai eu la chance d’aller en Afrique du Sud avec ces deux hommes en
2000 où nous avons eu l’opportunité de faire un très beau séjour dans
ce merveilleux pays. Quelques années plus tard, il prit des vacances
en Colombie avec Bobby Clark, le petit-fils de son très grand ami
James où il a eu du très bon temps.
Je l’appelais souvent de Bogota « Monsieur Barr, comment allez-vous
» et il me reconnaissait immédiatement. Il ne se plaignait jamais et tout
allait toujours bien. L’an passé, il me demanda de le rejoindre à
Madison. Curtis, son fils, allait prendre soin de lui. Il était très fier de
son fils et content de voir qu’il aimait les vaches. Je voulais retourner
en Afrique cette année avec Allan afin de participer à la Conférence
mondiale mais sa santé ne nous a pas donné cette chance.
Allan était une personne exceptionnelle, un très bon ami, mon
‘’homme’’ au Canada. Je souhaite que Dieu le garde dans son
Royaume, avec ses vaches et ses amis.
Mes sincères condoléances à ses enfants, Greg, Curtis & Nathalie et à
son partenaire de vie et ami, James Clark.

As a veterinarian, we are sometimes called to examine
calves for lameness. In cows, the majority of lameness
is directly associated to the hoof. However, in calves
the causes are diverse. This article will focus on the
most common causes of calf lameness.

En tant que vétérinaire, nous sommes parfois appelé à
examiner des veaux pour un cas de boiterie. Chez la
vache, la grande majorité des boiteries sont directement
liées à l’onglon. Cependant, chez le veau, l’origine est souvent diverse. Nous ciblerons ici les causes les plus souvent rencontrées.
Contracted flexor tendon :
Contracted flexor tendons are a result of shortened or
retracted tendons in the limb causing abnormal postuJodi Wallace, DVM
re. This can be seen in newborn calves. Tendons in the

locomotor system are affected congenitally. This is the
most common congenital condition in cows and it affects mostly the front limbs.
Calves that are mildly affected walk on the tip of their hooves (their heels never
touch the ground). In more severe cases, calves walk “knuckled over”. Often these
calves eat on their knees.
A certain number of these calves cure spontaneously. Others require immobilisation
of the limb to force extension. Your veterinarian can make a splint. Daily follow-up
of the splint and bandages is important to ensure proper fit and avoid pressure
sores.
Septic arthritis :
Septic arthritis is the infection of the joints. The joints become inflamed and painful and calves are often listless. Septic joints are commonly a result of a secondary
infection from a septicemia due to an umbilical infection, diarrhea (E.coli,
Salmonella, etc..), or a respiratory infection (Mycoplasma). The joint is infected via
the blood system.Treatment is difficult and often disappointing.To achieve the best
results, a treatment plan should be implemented by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Prevention is by far the best treatment. Cleanliness around calving, disinfection
of the umbilical cord, and excellent colostrum feeding are management points to
prioritize. Proper vaccination protocols for cows are also highly suggested to prevent neonatal diarrrhea in calves.
Calving trauma :
Calving problems (dystocia) and pulling calves (forced extractions) can sometimes
cause injuries or trauma to the limbs. Trauma includes fractures, dislocations or
other injuries involving ligaments, tendons or muscles. Excessive force should be
avoided during calving. Proper placement of chains on legs is essential to prevent
fractures. It is recommended to use a “double loop” with the chains. Place the first
loop above the fetlock and the second below the fetlock.
Paralysis following an injection :
Paralysis following an intramuscular injection sometimes happens in calves.
Injections in the rump or thigh can occasionally damage the sciatic nerve or its
branches.This results in a temporary or permanent paralysis.When this happens, the
calf will drag its rear leg or walk on its fetlock. Since calves do not have sufficient
muscular mass, intramuscular injections in these sites should be avoided. We prefer
subcutaneous injections in young calves when indicated.
Contracted tendons are the only cause of lameness that we have little control over
since it is a congenital condition. All the other causes of lameness are preventable,
such as septic arthritis, trauma related to calving, or injection paralysis. Good colostrum management, umbilical disinfection and proper practices around calving all
help to prevent lameness in calves. Again, success is in the prevention!

Nous observons ces cas chez le veau naissant. Ces
contractures, constituent l’affection congénitale de l’appareil locomoteur la plus fréquemment rencontrée chez les bovins et affectant surtout les membres antérieurs. Les
veaux faiblement affectés marchent sur la pointe des onglons sans que le talon n’arrive à toucher le sol. Dans les cas les plus sévères, les veaux se déplacent en appui sur
la face antérieure du pâturon ou du boulet.
Ils s’alimentent généralement à genoux.
Un certain nombre de ces veaux récupèrent spontanément. Pour les autres, il est envisageable de faire une immobilisation des membres atteints en extension forcée. Votre
vétérinaire pourra faire une immobilisation des membres avec une gouttière de PVC
ou de résine. Le suivi quotidien des ces bandages est important pour vérifier qu’ils ne
soient pas trop serrés ou pour éviter les blessures de contact.
Les arthrites septiques :
Les arthrites septiques sont l’infection des articulations chez le veau. Les articulations
atteintes sont enflées et douloureuses et le veau est souvent amorphe. Les arthrites
septiques sont habituellement le résultat d’une septicémie secondaire à une infection
du cordon ombilical, une entérite (E-Coli, salmonelle etc..), ou une infection respiratoire (mycoplasme). La contamination articulaire se fait alors par le sang. Le traitement
peut s’avérer difficile et décevant. Pour être efficace, les traitements doivent être mis
en place précocement par votre vétérinaire. Pour l’arthrite septique, la prévention est
de loin le meilleur moyen à préconiser. L’hygiène autour du vêlage, la désinfection souhaitable du nombril et la bonne distribution du colostrum sont des points de régie à
prioriser. De bons programmes de vaccination pour les vaches sont aussi disponibles
pour prévenir les diarrhées néonatales.
Trauma au vêlage :
Les problèmes de vêlage (dystocie) et les extractions forcées des veaux peuvent être
la cause de certaines blessures ou traumatismes aux membres de ces veaux. Ces traumas sont des fractures, des dislocations ou d’autres lésions impliquant les ligaments,
les tendons ou les muscles. Il faut donc éviter d’exercer une force excessive lors du
vêlage. Le bon positionnement des chaines obstétriques sur les membres est capital
pour prévenir les fractures. Il est conseillé de faire deux anneaux avec les chaines obstétriques. Il faut placer le premier au dessus du boulet et le deuxième sous le boulet.
Une parésie suite à une injection :
Une parésie suite à une injection intramusculaire est rencontrée à l’occasion chez le
jeune veau. Une injection intramusculaire sur la croupe ou dans la cuisse peut occasionner des dommages au nerf sciatique ou à ses branches distales. Il en résulte une
parésie temporaire ou permanente. À ce moment le veau atteint laissera trainer son
membre postérieur ou marchera sur le boulet. Puisque les veaux n’ont pas une masse
musculaire suffisante pour faciliter les injections intramusculaires, cette voie d’injection devrait être proscrite. Nous préconisons donc l’injection sous cutanée chez les
très jeunes veaux.
La contracture des tendons fléchisseurs demeure la seule cause de boiterie relatée ici
sur laquelle nous avons peu de contrôle, puisque c’est un problème congénital. Pour
les autres causes, soit l’arthrite septique, les traumas au vêlage et la parésie suite à une
injection sont toutes des causes qui peuvent être contrôlées. Une bonne gestion du
colostrum, une désinfection adéquate du nombril et de bonnes habitudes de travail au
vêlage sont tous des points de régie qui pourront aider à prévenir la majorité de ces
problèmes locomoteurs chez le veau. Encore une fois, la réussite passe par la prévention!

LA JEUNESSE AYRSHIRE
SE DISTINGUE AU SEIN DE 4-H
Quebec 4-H is continuously busy preparing for events, planning activities and completing projects. Thanks to the dedicated leaders, family
members and staff, 4-H helps youth to excel not only in husbandry and
agricultural practices, but in leadership and personal skills. Members
from Ayrshire farms were busy in 2012.
At the Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic Show in Toronto this past November,
Carrie Simpson of the Ormstown 4-H Club received Honorable Mention
in the Color Breeds with Lashburn Kellybuck Britney of Deerbrae Farm
in Huntingdon. Lashburn Kellybuck Britney was also nominated All
Canadian 4-H calf for this past show season. Upon graduation from high
school, Carrie received among others two scholarships for going into an
agriculture or forestry program, the CO-OP des Frontiers bursary and
the Monsanto Canada Opportunity Scholarship. Carrie is studying in the
Farm Management and Technology program at Macdonald College.
At the club level, members learn judging skills at their local events such
as in Howick where a judging day was held in the spring at Marbrae
Farms and also at their annual Achievement Day at Terrace Bank Farms
Howick 4-H member Rachel MacFarlane was named fourth overall
judge for 2012 at the Quebec 4-H Annual General Meeting this past
November. Rachel is from Marbrae Farms and is 21 years old. Also
deserving merit once again is Carrie Simpson who placed 10th. Placings
are determined based on results from competitions at our Provincial
Rally and at the Macdonald Campus Intercollegiate Judging
Competition. Both girls hold positions on the Quebec 4-H board of
directors and are active in their perspective clubs.
At the November AGM, Quebec 4-H was honored to have much
acclaimed alumni Robert E Ness receive the Queen Elizabeth II
Diamond Jubilee Medal for his dedication to 4-H for over 30 years.
Upon acceptance of this prestigious award, Mr. Ness encouraged all
members to carry on with enthusiasm knowing the tremendous benefit
4-H can play in their lives and subsequently in their communities and
nation.
Ben Nichols of Crystal Brook Farm serves on the board of directors of
Quebec 4-H and the Quebec Farmers Association. He is working along
with fellow Sawyerville 4-H members Matthew and Cameron Burns of
Island Brook Aryshires to plan Provincial Rally 2013 to be held July 1821 at the Cookshire Fairgrounds. This is Quebec 4-H`s largest event and
composes an entire weekend of showmanship, judging and other
demonstrations of skills. Showing at our Rally in 2012 were 16 Aryshires
and another good show is anticipated this coming year.
The public is invited to attend Rally and other activities during 2013 as
Quebec 4-H joins in 100th Anniversary Celebrations of 4-H in Canada.
Meanwhile the centennial of rural youth movements in Quebec is also
being recognized by 4-H, the Association des Jeunes Ruraux du Quebec
and the Fédération Relève Agriculture du Quebec.
L’association Québec 4-H travaille sans relâche à la préparation d’événements, à la planification d’activités et à la réalisation de projets. Grâce à des
leaders dévoués, aux membres des familles et aux employés, 4-H aide les
jeunes à exceller tant au niveau de l’élevage et des pratiques agricoles que
du leadership et des compétences personnelles. Les membres issus de fermes Ayrshire furent très occupés au cours de l’année 2012.
À la Classique laitière 4-H du Canada tenue à Toronto en novembre dernier,
Carrie Simpson du club Ormstown 4-H s’est mérité une Mention Honorable
dans les races colorées avec Lashburn Kellybuck Britney de la ferme
Deerbrae Farm de Huntingdon. Lashburn Kellybuck Britney fut aussi nominée Génisse Toute-Canadienne 4-H pour sa récente saison d’exposition.
Suite à sa graduation de l’école secondaire, Carrie a obtenu, entre autres,
deux bourses d’étude pour des programmes d’agriculture ou de foresterie,
soit la bourse CO-OP des Frontiers et la bourse Monsanto Canada
Opportunity. Carrie étudie présentement au sein du programme de gestion
et exploitation d’entreprise agricole au Collège Macdonald.
À travers leur club, les membres sont initiés à l’expertise de jugement lors
d’événements locaux, tel qu’à Howick où une journée de jugement fut tenue
au printemps aux fermes Marbrae Farms et aussi lors de la journée annuelle
Achievement Day aux fermes Terrace Bank Farms.
La membre du club Howick 4-H, Rachel MacFarlane, a terminé 4e au classement final des juges pour 2012 lors de l’Assemblée Générale Annuelle de
Québec 4-H en novembre dernier. Des fermes Marbrae Farms, Rachel est
agée de 21 ans. Carrie Simpson s’est une fois de plus distinguée en finissant
quant à elle 10e. Le classement est déterminé selon les résultats obtenus lors
des concours du rallye provincial et du concours d’expertise intercollégial
du campus Macdonald. Ces deux jeunes femmes siègent sur le comité d’administration de Québec 4-H et sont aussi impliquées dans leur clubs respectifs.
Lors de l’AGA en novembre, Québec 4-H eut le privilège de remettre la
médaille du jubilé de diamant de la reine Élizabeth II au très apprécié ancien
membre Robert E Ness pour son dévouement à 4-H au cours des 30
dernières années. Suite à la réception de cette récompense prestigieuse, M.
Ness a encouragé tous les membres à poursuivre avec enthousiasme leur
implication, attestant des bénéfices immenses que peut entraîner 4-H dans
leurs vies et, par la suite, dans leurs communautés et la nation toute entière.

exposées et on s’attend à une autre exposition d’envergure cette année.
On invite le public à assister au rallye et aux autres activités de 2013 alors
que Québec 4-H participera aux célébrations des 100 ans de 4-H au Canada.
De même, le 100e de la jeunesse rurale au Québec est aussi célébré par
Québec 4-H, l’Association des Jeunes Ruraux du Québec et la Fédération de
la relève agricole du Québec.

BEREAVEMENT / DÉCÈS
On November 28th, 2012 Mr. Marius Fournier died accidently. He was
the founder of the Troupeau Mont Comi herd which he ran with his
wife Marie-Ange Ruest and his son Denis for several years. Mr.
Fournier had received a Master Breeder Award and had been
involved with the Bas St. Laurent Ayrshire Club and in the organisation of various events. He is survived by his wife, his son Martin (Julie
Bachand) from the Clinique Vétérinaire de l’Estuaire, and his son
Gilles who now runs the Mont Comi herd with his partner Martine
Trudel. The family thanks the Ayrshire Family and their friends from
the breeding world for their support during this difficult time.
Le 28 Novembre 2012 est décédé accidentellement M. Marius Fournier.
Il avait fondé le Troupeau Mont Comi, qu'il a exploité avec son épouse
Marie-Ange Ruest et son fils Denis pendant plusieurs années. Monsieur
Fournier avait reçu un prix de Maitre Éleveur et a été impliqué avec le
club Ayrshire Bas St Laurent ainsi que dans l'organisation de divers
évènements. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse ainsi que son fils Martin
(Julie Bachand) de la Clinique Vétérinaire de l'Estuaire et son fils Gilles
qui exploite maintenant le troupeau Mont Comi avec sa conjointe
Martine Trudel. La famille remercie la famille Ayrshire et leurs amis du
monde de l'élevage pour leur support dans ces durs moments.
