This Project has been done to present the history of our hometown and its surroundings. We are going to show how our local places and historical events involve the history of Europe. We have worked in groups finding all information about our hometown and its surroundings. We have worked together with an historian whose has always told us : “See your hometown with someone else’s eyes.” By doing this project we have tried to show all natural and historical beauties the Pontine land possesses, such as Latina. We have learnt how cultural differences are meaningful in Eurpoe . We have learnt to share different opinions, Now we exactly know what this sentence means : “Different but united in Europe“ 3 Le premier document à la base des mouvements pour l’unification européenne est : Le Manifesto de Ventotene publié en août 1941 . The first document which can be considered the starting point of the European Union is : “ The Ventotene Manifesto ” published in 1941. Its main representative is ALTIERO SPINELLI. He drew it out after reading A. Haminlton’s essays. On September 19th 1946 Winston Churchill the British prime minister talked about the : “ United States of Europe for the first time”. All members in the parliament liked this proposal very much 4 because of the ideas of hope and peace which embodied, when Europe was still characterized by famine and hate. 5 The history of Latina • Latina is the first of the new towns built after the Pontine Marsh Reclaimation, which was founded on the 18th of december 1932. • The Pontine Marsh Reclaimation has been done in different times over the centuries, by popes, kings, such as Napoleon, finally the Fascist Government completed it by building a channel system for water draining. • The first inhabitants in the Pontine Marshes date back to eight thousand years ago and can be identified with the Neanderthal Man. Then the Lepini, Ciociari and Abruzzesi communities settled down in this woody and savage land to grow crops. • La ville de Latina a été projeté par l’architecte Oriolo Frezzotti et c’est l’un des exemples de l’architecture définie « Razionalista » The history of Littoria - Latina has been characterized by immigration, hard work and diseases such as the malaria. The town of Latina has been planned by the architect Oriolo Frezzotti. It is of the most remarkable examples of the rationalist architecture . 7 • The village of Littoria became a modern town with important infrastructures and monuments. • It became chief town in 1934. On the 29th of September 1944 it turned its first name Littoria into LATINA 8 • Le village de Littoria devient une moderne ville avec d’ importants monuments et d’infrastructures. 10 SATRICUM • Man has been living in the province of Latina for centuries and centuries. As it has been demonstrated by the” skull ”discovered in the ” Guattari cave “ in S. Felice Circeo. This place has been quoted in the famous epic poem the “ Odyssey “ written by Homer where the history of Pontine Marshes is connected with the war of Troy. • In the past one of the most important Pontine towns was Satricum, which was built on the Astura river. The town was destroyed different times in 377, 386 , 387 b.c. On the acropolis the “Mater Matuta” temple ( The goddess of life ) was built. Two important necropolis have been discovered in this ancient area. • Its first inhabitants the Volsci used to live in Satricum in huts used to live here, who then, were destroyed by the Romans. 11 The PARK The largest park (8.000 hectares) is the National Circeo Park, which straddles the municipalities of Latina, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Ponza Island (the Zannone islet). Monte Circeo with the Carsican Marine and internal grottoes (including the grottoes of the Enchantress Circe, the She-goats and the Guattari where the skull of the man who lived there 50.000 years ago was discovered in 1939), the coastal lakes of Fogliano, Monaci, Caprolace and Paola, the kilometers of coastal dunes, the 3.400 hectares of forests, the island of Zannone, the archeological remains and the botanical and wildlife environments are the main features of this area. 12 Fogliano is in the north of the Circeo National Park and it is a place where man and nature are in close communion. Fogliano is important not only for its natural beauties but also for its historical and architectural features, in fact in this area, a lot of prehistoric weapons and tools have been discovered. The Romans reclaimed it, turning it into a breeding and fishing area, building pools and canals to exploit the lake better. Thee most important historical monument is the “Villa“ bought by the Caetani in 1297, they managed: Sermoneta, Ninfa, the Fogliano and Caprolace coast lakes, ordered by Bonifacio VIII. FOGLIANO A botanical garden, which at the beginning was just an exotic garden, in the end of the XIX century . In the 20s, in the Fogliano botanical garden a spontaneous natural process started, with Mediterranean species, together with palms, eucalypts and araucarias. Besides some other important monuments are the ” English Villa “ and the “ Procoio “ a typical building in this area. In the past, fishermen, hunters and some guardians used to live here in Fogliano. Vegetation was typically Mediterranean and around the village there were a lot of owks . The Fogliano inhabitants were above all hunters which was their most important activity. La végétation est typique du “maquis” méditerranéen . 14 The history of this abbey is connected to a medieval legend according to which in this place the last Great Master Templar was sent to the stake in 1312 ( the architraves of the churches were falling apart…..) in recent times, on the western side of the cloister, have come to the light ancient graffiti written on the original plaster : the five famous words of the magic palindrome: SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS divided in 5 sectors, so as to to form one shape similar to a target. The church was built around 1240 in gothic-Cistercian style. Next to the church there is a beautiful cloister (restored in the 50s) where you can visit the Capitular’s Room. 17 Ninfa is a medieval town abandoned at the end of the XIV century. It contains the remains of churches, houses, the castle and the town hall, all set in a splendid English garden, through which the crystal-clear waters of the Ninfa river flow. 18 The archipelago of the pontine islands comprises two groups of islands, one about 22 miles distant from the other. The northwestern group comprises the island of Ponza and the islets of Palmarola, Gavi and Zannone. The south-easterner group comprises Ventotene and S.Stefano . Ventotene, half-way between Ponza and Ischia, is the smallest Pontine island. Extremely quiet, surrounded by crystal-clear waters, it offers a holiday during which you give yourself up completely to the pleasure of being there plunged in the beauties of nature , far from chaos and the city noises. Its extraordinary morphologies, the scents of the Mediterranean Bush, the intense colors joined to the warm hospitality of its inhabitants, make it an unforgettable stay for those who look for an island far from the stereotypes of seaside vacations. To the sea level the island is about 2900 metres long and 900 metres wide , it is tufaceous and has steep coasts. The circumnavigation is equal to 5 nautical miles. There are shallows in the northern coast between the rocks called “ Sconcigli and the southern coast between Cala Battaglia and Le Saliere. The Island of Ventotene is just about two kilometers long, it is "in the middle of the sea “ but it can boast a very ancient history dating from when Ulysses heard the sirens song near its reefs.. 19 L'archipel des îles pontines se compose de deux groupes d'îles éloignées 22 milles approximativement. A park and a museum unique in its kind all over Europe, a centre of culture in which the visitor is charmed, deeply involved and amused at the same time.
