The primary research interest of
Stefan Reichmuth is on the modern
period starting in the 16th century,
in a comparative and transregional
perspective which includes the
Middle East and North Africa,
Subsaharan Africa, and South Asia.
His research has covered different
regions of the Muslim world and
includes the following areas: Islamic
Learning and Arabic Literature in
Africa; The Islamic world of the Early
Modern Period in transregional
perspective; Mysticism, Science and
Medicine in Muslim societies; Unani
Medicine in South Asia.
He published Islamische Bildung und
soziale Integration in Ilorin (Nigeria)
seit ca. 1800 (1998), The World of
Murtada al-Zabidi (1732-91). Life,
Networks, and Writings (2009), and
co-edited Islamic Education in the
Soviet Union and its Successor States
(2010).
Since 2002, he has been chief editor
of the journal Die Welt des Islams.
