I BGS I eden-stell guitar duo per s® nare a due I Eden-Stell Duo "The Eden Stell Duo continue to render superlatives redundant. .. blinding virtuosity ... full of infectious vitality... one of the greatest duos of their generatiOn." CLASSICAL GUITAR MAGAZINE Mark and Christopher formed their duo whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music, where they were awarded several major prizes including the Principal's Prize for Achievement and the Julian Bream Prize. With the aid of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, they then continued their studies in Brussels with the Brazilian Guitar Duo, Sergio and Odair Assad. As winners of the Park Lane Group's Young Artists' Concert Series and the South East Musicians' Platform they have given recitals at the South Bank Centre and the Wigmore Hall, and have subsequently been invited to perform there by music organisations such as 'Live Music Nowl', the Kirckman Concert Society, and Classical Guitar Magazine. Other engagements include festivals and recitals in Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Romania, Canada and Australia, and numerous radio and 1V appearances on 11V, BBC and European networks. Mark and Chris have had works dedicated to them by Stephen Dodgson, Adam Garb, Dusan Bogdanovic and Gerald Garcia, and have performed double concerti by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Vivaldi, Santorsola and Dodgson. Their recording on the Docker Records label of baroque harpsichord transcriptions by Rameau, Couperin, and Scarlatti, was described by the Observer as an "unique release. [They are] blessed with an impossibly wonderful technique and an exceptionally delicate touch ." Shortly afterwards on the BGS label they released their CD, "Follow the Star", which was acclaimed by the Gramophone magazine as "a landmark recording" and is devoted to the works of Stephen Dodgson, featuring his 'Concertino for two guitars and strings', written for the duo. In March 2000, Mark and Chris were elected Associates of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of their performing achievements. The duo play Christopher Dean guitars and use D'Addario strings. "Their performance exuded such natural vitality and joy in their skills and rapport that I was hanging on almost every note ... a riveting experience." THE INDEPENDENT, LONDON Dusan Bogdanovic Dusan Bogdanovic (b.1955) completed his studies of composition, orchestration and guitar at the Conservatory of Geneva, Switzerland, and received the only first prize at the International Competition of Geneva in 1975. His career as a solo performer/composer has taken him to festivals and concert tours throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. His music is published by Berben in Italy, Doberman-Yppan in Canada, GSP in the United States, and his recording credits include 16 albums ranging from Bach to original contemporary works. Tombeau de Purcell "When Mark Eden and Christopher Stell asked me to write a piece for their ensemble, a strong model came to my mind: Picasso's variations on Velazquez's "Las Meninas". Composed in a similar vein, Tombeau de Purcell represents a set of variations written after one of his most beloved vocal works - Dido's Lament. Tombeau is built on both melodic motifs and the descending chromatic line which forms the harmonic backbone of the lament. Although my composition mirrors some of the Baroque formal models (such as the Overture and the Passacaglia), most of the variations are conceived very freely. Polymeter and Balkan oddmeter - my rhy1hmical tools of the trade - abound, as well as modal and polymodal languages. Passacaglia, in particular, features a wealth of rhy1hmically free-flowing phrases in conjunction with metrically expanding and contracting chromatic lines. Only at the end of the piece, the second guitar literally quotes the Purcell's theme. Contrary to the academic view, according to which past masterpieces remain immutably entrenched in their cultural niches, they appear as an endless inspiration to the creative mind. And fortunately, instead of being forever imprisoned in their place of static perfection, they become lively midwives to new syntheses." DB interchangeable and the three central movements can be played in any order the performers choose. Leo Brouwer Roland Dyens Leo Brouwer is the foremost guitarisVcomposer of our time. He stands in a long tradition of composing guitarists stretching from Gaspar Sanz and Francisco Corbetta via Mauro Guiliani, Fernando Sor, Napoleon Coste and Johann Kaspar Mertz to Francisco Tarrega and Miguel Llobet. As a composer he has gone through many changes, from Latin American folk music inspired works to experimentation, serial avant-garde and post minimalist accessibility. In the early part of his career he was also a very successful virtuoso on the international circuit; later he turned to conducting with equal success, his credits include rnusic director of the Cordoba Symphony Orchestra and many guest appearances with the world's great orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Roland Dyens has continued to pursue the dual calling of pedagogue and performer, and is widely recognised as a consummate interpreter, arranger, teacher, composer and improvisational artist who has a rare ability to share his musical insights and performance skills with students. Roland Dyens (b. 1955) began studying the guitar at the age of nine. At fourteen, he enrolled at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris to study with the Spanish master Alberto Ponce. He passed his Concert Degree with high honors in 1976. He then won several prizes, including the Villa-Lobos Special Prize at the Alessandria International Contest in Italy, and became a laureate of the Beracasa and Menuhin Foundations. In addition to his superb background in performance, Roland Dyens also studied composition and orchestration with the master Desire Dondeyne. He was awarded first prize in harmony, counterpoint and musical analysis. Among his published guitar compositions are works for solo, duo, quartet, guitar concertos and chamber works. Per Suonare a Due (1971) Per Suonare a Due represented a new departure for Brouwer. Whilst a lot of improvisatory and aleatoric techniques are used, a well-defined formal structure is always maintained. lt can either be performed by two players or by only one playing along with a recording of the other part. The piece is playful and humorous, both in its expressive content and formal structure: the prologue and epilogue are Cote Nord: Danish Time, Hillerod, Ga-Jol Dance (1992) Cote Nord was commissioned by the International 'Guitar Passion' Festival, Cannes, where it was first performed by the composer and his teacher, Alberto Ponce. it was composed in 1992 partly in Denmark, in the city of Hiller0d near Copenhagen, in the house of lnga Damm and Svend Wohlert, whom the composer considers to be his 'Danish parents'. This piece is a homage to Denmark, a country that he loves deeply. After several months studying this piece we asked the composer to fax details about the movements, which he describes as follows: "The first movement, Danish 1ime, is sometimes atonal, sometimes bitonal, and tries to show some of the possibilities of resonance and range of colour of two guitars, which play a kind of duelling garne. The beginning of the second movement, Hiller0d, is bitonal. Here is also a sort of game between the two guitars - each on different planets (bitonaO and then on the same planet, (monotonal). Ga-Jol is the name of the most famous bonbon in Denmark. it is a sort of symbol for Danish people because they all have some in their pockets! The GaJol Dance is a crazy dance, which must be played in a humoristic manner. This movement is very close to modern jazz with a lot of 'swing'. Towards the end, a popular song from Denmark is quoted in natural harmonics as if heard from a distance." RD Nikita Koshkin Nikita Koshkin (b. 1956 Moscow) recalls liking the music of Shostakovich and Stravinsky at age 4. His parents planned a diplomatic career for young Nikita, however, and until he was 14, rock was his only musical interest. That year, his grandfather gave him a guitar and a recording by Segovia, and his life was changed. Composing for and playing the guitar became his double passion, and he went on to study guitar with George Emanov at the Moscow College of Music, and with Alexander Frauchi at the Gnesin Institute (Russian Academy of Music), where he also studied composition with Victor Egorov. Koshkin's composing profile gained international stature in 1980, when Vladimir Mikulka premiered his suite for guitar, The Prince's Toys. Koshkin's music, which includes scores for guitar ensembles and works for guitar with other instruments and the voice, has since been performed by artists such as John Williarns, the Assad brothers, and the Zagreb and Amsterdam Guitar Trios. Koshkin is also an active concertizer, with tours of Russia, Central and Western Europe, Great Britain and the United States to his credit. His first CD was made in Arizona through Soundset Recordings while he was in the United States in 1997 as a featured artist of the Guitar Foundation of America International Convention in southern California. Concertino was written for the Assad Duo and consists of one movement with three distinct sections (fast-slow-fast). The opening motif of two stark chords is concisely developed, building to a point in the last section where the main theme resumes. Concerti no "Concertino was conceived as a one-movement work with three distinct sections: fast - slow - fast. The thematic material evolves creating two distinctive moods whose characters begin quite independently. As the work unfolds the themes intertwine and imitate one another, and are heard in augmentation and diminution, reappearing suddenly with menace in the slow middle section. A gradual accelerando allows the recapitulation to break free, building to a point where the original theme resumes ." Eden Stell wou ld like to thank D'Addario strings, Chris Dean, John Taylor, Helen, Sally, Michael Lewin, Colin Downs, Tom Kerstens and the IGF team, Mark Deller and Stour Music. Commission information Tombeau by Dusan Bogdanovic was commissioned for the Eden-Stell Guitar Duo by Stour Music. lt was premiered on 27 June 2003. PER SUONARE A DUE (1971) Per Suonare a Due stellt einen Richtungswechsel filr Brouwer dar.
