The calorimeter’s cover consists of the following elements: • 1 guided non-removable plastic stirrer, with a rectangular crosssection • 1 ∅ 11 mm port for a thermometer or a probe • 1 ∅ 6 mm guide for an expansion thermometer or a temperature probe • 1 central circular opening that can be plugged by a cover to insert resistances • Two 2 and 4 Ω resistances connected in series on sheathed aluminium rods, connected to an insulating cover with ∅ 4mm safety plugs. *Noted: if the introduction of the thermometer is difficult, to use a little Vaseline to facilitate the passage and avoid the risks of accidental breakage. To make temperature measurements, the calorimeter can be used with : • • A fairly long glass expansion thermometer* A temperature probe with a diameter less than 7 mm, such as the ® ® Initio Thermometer part no. 251 040 or the Initio SA Thermometer with analog output part no. 251 045 (a retaining clip for the temperature probe is provided for these 2 devices). 2 Technical characteristics • Effective volume: 950 ml • Internal dimensions of the vessel: ∅ = 85 mm x 180 mm • External dimensions: ∅ = 130 mm x 270 mm • Heat capacity: negligible, < 30 J/C° (with protective vessel) • Power supply: 12 V max DC Caution!! The resistances must always be submerged when they are powered on. ENGLISH 6 Material properties Dewar flask calorimeter Ref : 253 081 3 Adiabatic properties 3.1 Thermal inertia The melting of an ice cube in 250 ml of water lowers the temperature in the enclosure. Ambient temperature: 20°C Temperature in the calorimeter after fusion: 13.3°C The initial temperature difference between the surroundings and the calorimetric enclosure is 6.7°C. time T (°C) ∆T(°C) 0 13.3 0 1h 14.2 0.9 2h 14.9 1.6 3h 15.5 2.2 4h 16 2.7 5h 16.3 3.0 7h 17 3.7 10 h 17.5 4.2 As calorimetric experiments last only a few minutes, we can consider that the calorimeter is perfectly adiabatic (insulated) for a temperature difference of ± 5°C between the ambient and internal temperatures. 3.2 Heat loss We have established the heat loss curve of the calorimeter with 200 g of water, the ambient temperature being 25°C . ENGLISH 7 Material properties Dewar flask calorimeter Ref : 253 081 Temperature (°C) Decrease in temperature over 50 minutes 90 85 80 75 70 65 60 55 50 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 Time (minutes) Between 85 and 72 °C, the decrease in temperature i s 1.8 °C per minute, on an average. Below 70°C, the decrease remains almost constant at 0.27 °C per minute over the entire measuring range. The loss of heat therefore remains low considering the experimental parameters: • We are located more than 20 °C above the ambient t emperature • The volume of water represents only 1/5 of the calorimeter’s effective volume. th 4 Experiments 4.1 Heat capacity of the calorimeter We pour 250 ml of water (cold) at 20.7°C in the cal orimeter We then pour 250 ml of hot water at 55.2°C in the c alorimeter. The final temperature is 37.7°C. According to the following formula, it is possible to determine the heat capacity of the calorimeter knowing that Cwater = 4187 J/Kg/°C. We show that the heat capacity of the calorimeter with the plastic protective jacket is 32.05 J/°C. ENGLISH 8 Material properties Dewar flask calorimeter Ref : 253 081 4.2 Variation of the quantity of heat with the intensity Place a mass m (about 300 g) of water in the vessel of the calorimeter. Immerse the resistance and the accessories of the calorimeter and record the temperature of the assembly on the thermometer. Prepare a circuit that includes a current source, an ammeter, a rheostat and the resistance in series. Switch on the power and start marking time. Note down the current on the ammeter. Let the current flow for a time t. Repeat the experiment several times by changing the current. The quantity of heat is expressed by: with : Q = m.C.(θ2 - θ1) m the mass of water C the specific heat of water θ1 the initial temperature θ2 the final temperature If I1, I2, and I3 are the different intensities measured, we can verify that the ratios Q1, Q2, etc. of the quantities of heat released are proportional to the squares of the measured currents. 4.3 Variation of the quantity of heat with time Take several temperature readings θ1 at regular intervals. Calculate the quantities of heat released: Q = m. C. (θ2 - θ1). We observe that the quantities of heat released are proportional to the time intervals separating the start of the experiment from each of the readings. 4.4 Variation of resistance the quantity of heat with Repeat the experiment under the same current and time conditions by successively using the 3 resistance values R1, R2, R3. 4.5 Determining the ratio W Let the current flow for a time of t seconds. The quantity of energy released is W = RI² x T, in Joules. By calculating the ratio W/Q, you will find a number that is close to 4 (J = 4.18). 4.6 Measuring the specific heat of liquids An interesting application of Joule’s law is to measure the specific heat of various liquids. We obtain an increase in temperature θ1. ENGLISH 9 Material properties Dewar flask calorimeter Ref : 253 081 Replace water with another liquid and repeat the experiment with the same resistance, the same current and for the same duration. The rise in temperature is θ1. The specific heat of the liquid M may be calculated using the formula : C / m: = θ1 / θ2. 5 After-Sales Service This material is under a two year warranty and should be returned to our stores in the event of any defects.
