agencement - Merchanfeeling - The merchandising reference
Very precise for its merchandising, Victoria Secrets organises its offer per category of products and in each and every category classifies it according to a colour code (London store, July 2013) 28 © Merchanfeeling © Merchanfeeling Hanging items placed on shells... an efficient way to attract the eye while keeping a perspective on the rest of the offer (lingerie area of the Galeries Lafayette in Paris, July 2013) At Selfridges in London, the flip flop offer has been worked by colour code, for both an attractive and informative visual effect (July 2013) Créations Lingerie • Octobre - Novembre - Décembre 2013 © Merchanfeeling This Traffic people store, situated within the Spitafields London market, wanted to animate its store and to attract the customers there by placing a vintage car, nicely decorated, in which there is a model wearing clothes on offer in the store (July 2013) Shopfitting: trends and tracks to be followed Today when the consumer has plenty of choice as to what to buy, it is essential to think about the means to stress your offer in the stores to make it both clear and attractive. Créations Lingerie gives you advice and tips from the merchandising professionals. BY VALÉRIE CHARIER “T he first objective of merchandising is to place the customer at the heart of the process”, says Béatrice Querette, the founder and manageress of the Merchanfeeling consulting agency. So it is indeed while thinking of your customers, their needs and expectations that the fitting-up of your store must be thought of. More so than ever, when there are many distribution channels on offer, you have to choose and this choice must be translated in such a way as to attract the consumers who see it as adequate. “We are drifting away from those neutral stores which at the end of the day attract nobody”. APPEALING TO THE CUSTOMER’S 5 SENSES Originating from the luxury world, Béatrice Querette is in favour of a merchandising appeal- surface, from the biggest to the smallest. Feeling is less immediate: it may result from the presentation which is an invitation to get closer to the product to touch it. But it may also mean the softness of a carpet in the fitting room, for instance. Last tasting is no doubt the most difficult sense to arouse. It may be aroused by a package of colours, smells and visuals which go back to a tasting feeling. CLEAR AND ORGANISED SHOPFITTING: A WIN-WIN MODEL ing to our five senses: sight indeed, yet also hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. “The stores have a real card to play to stand out from the virtual. Whetting the five senses of the consumers is a means to stand out from the screens”. Indeed, but practically, what may be done? Sight is the most obvious sense to stir up with the fitting-up. Yet it is necessary to offer a clearly readable fitting-up (examples and counter-examples in this article). Sound also seems easy to translate, even if one must always remember that the type of music and the tonality have an impact. A loud sound may indeed create a dynamic, yet it is quickly exhausting and corresponds more to a young clientele. Advice, however: never use a radio as background sound since it is impersonal and it is impossible to avoid advertising time which is something the customers do not like. To stimulate smelling, fragrance diffuser may be included, which today offer a rather large range of solutions and smells adapted to any type of Octobre - Novembre - Décembre 2013 • Créations Lingerie To attract the consumer’s eye and make sure it is caught very soon by what may interest him/ her, there is nothing better than a well organised offer. This organisation may be done by category of product: a lingerie space, a sleepwear space, a swimwear space, etc. As long as each and everyone has its very own small space, i.e. which stands out from the others while obviously keeping a family look. Yet the offer may also be sorted out by colour codes for a definite visual effect. BEING ECCENTRIC, YET IN TOUCHES It is a well-known fact that the consumer is keen for brand new experiences. So he/she will appreciate an exceptional decoration or presentation which will stress and animate the offer. Be careful, however, not to wear him/her out in multiplying these cynosures in the store, which would create a cacophony. Q 29
