Annual
Report
Message from the directors
The grassroot movement that Équiterre has been building for 20 years
has become indispensable in 2015. Tens of thousands of citizens took
to the streets of Ottawa and Quebec City in record-breaking numbers
to march for the climate. A growing number of businesses from all
sectors joined in promoting the benefits of a low-carbon economy.
Farmers, agronomists, doctors and researchers came together to call
for stricter regulations on the use of synthetic pesticides.
The result: Canada resumed its rightful place at the negotiating table,
and 195 countries signed a historic climate agreement in Paris. The
premiers of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia,
accounting for 90% of the Canadian population, put or pledged to put
a price on carbon. This was unthinkable just a year ago. The Quebec and
Ontario environment ministers also announced stricter regulations on
the use of bee-killing pesticides.
And this is just the beginning!
In 2016, Équiterre will continue to build this movement and transform
this incredible people power into concrete results in an effort to protect
the environment for future generations.

Our annual member meetups were held in Quebec City on April 27
and in Montreal on April 29.

Équiterre family
farmer network
Over 13,000 baskets from 105 farms delivered
via 550 drop-off points supplied nearly 40,000
people, with organic vegetables.
Our family farmer network was even represented at the People’s
Expo forum in Milan and the 6th International Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) Conference in Peking.
To commemorate the creation of the family farmer network and
organic basket program in Quebec 20 years ago, Équiterre started an
annual awards program, which includes the Pioneer Award to recognize
farmers who helped create the network (awarded to the CadetRoussel farm) and the Golden Carrot Award for farmers whose topquality baskets, summer and winter, and outstanding management and
commitment set them apart (awarded to the Vallon des Sources farm).

Healthy eating in institutions
Some 450 participants attended the first-ever
pan-Canadian school food conference organized
by Équiterre and its partners.

menu for
418,000
children.
Over 150 themed meals featuring 32 different fruits and
vegetables were put on the menu in four nursing homes as part of
a project to increase the amount of local food served to residents
and employees.

Transportation electrification
Some 1,200 people attended 5 Rendez-vous
branchés held in Magog, Lévis, Victoriaville, Montreal and St-Jérôme to promote electric vehicles.
With the help of a short video, Web content, media placement
and a contest, we informed some 300,000 people about electric
transportation.
After years of work on this initiative, Équiterre welcomed Quebec’s
tabling of a policy on transportation electrification.

Transportation cocktail
Thousands of young people learned how to break
their solo driving habits by using a cocktail of simple
solutions that combines active transportation, car
sharing and public transit.
Thanks to a TV ad, booths in universities, a short video, an online contest
and content on social media—all delivered with a touch of humour—
over 100,000 people learned about transportation alternatives.

Fight against climate change
The Polar Bear on thin Ice exhibition raises
awareness about global warming. Starting in
late November 2015, it took just 18 days for the
polar bear to melt!
During the federal election campaign, Équiterre
took action to encourage people to vote for
the environment!
Équiterre also upheld the demands of environmentally
conscious citizens and its members and supporters
in the fight against climate change at
the United Nations Climate Conference
(COP21) in Paris.

Fight against pesticides
Équiterre has been fighting the use of harmful
pesticides for years, and the hard work is starting
to pay off—Quebec has announced plans to develop
a new pesticide use reduction strategy.

Chantal Lacasse, a master’s
student in environmental
management at the Université
de Sherbrooke, was awarded
the 7th Annual Laure Waridel
Bursary worth $10,000.
This helped to fund her comparative analysis of four methods of
farming wheat in Quebec, which examines the environmental, social
and economic impacts.

Équiterre urged 500 guests (from over 200
businesses) to make climate commitments in the
run-up to COP21.

Citizen mobilization
Our 4 action groups (Lanaudière, Montreal,
Outaouais and Quebec City), comprising nearly
50 volunteers, showed great imagination in
promoting Équiterre’s mission and raising public
awareness about environmental issues:
• Talk on simple living
• Pipeline project information evenings
• Tour à la Terre bike ride and visit to an organic vegetable
farm in Donnacona
• Board game evening to raise funds for Équiterre
• Staffing Équiterre booths and providing logistical sup-
port to projects (transportation cocktail, 100% Possible
Climate March and Act on Climate March)

Some 48,000 people signed a petition to save
Quebec’s Route Verte.
Groups of concerned citizens banded together to inform the residents
of Ahuntsic-Cartierville (Montreal) and Beauport-Limoilou (near Quebec City) about the importance of climate issues in the federal election.
Success! Thanks to pressure from environmentalists and engaged
citizens, TransCanada’s plans to build an oil port in Cacouna as part of
the Energy East project were dropped.
Benefit auction
Équiterre’s 2nd online auction raised $11,354 to
help fund various education projects. Over 11,000
visits resulted in more than 200 bids.
