www.bbc.co.uk/languages/french
After getting your bearings in town,
discover how to ask for help when you
get lost out in the country.
French Steps Stage 4: Getting your bearings
Talk French is repeated regularly on BBC
Learning Zone (BBC Two). Check out the
details on www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone
and video the programmes to watch at
your leisure.
Watch Hakim asking the owner of a gîte about the
local area, to find out about shops and good walks.
Go to Build sentences to learn how to do it for
yourself, and do the activities.
Talk French: Directions
Focus on selected clips from the TV programme and
have a go at the activities, designed to help you
gain confidence with directions. Then check your
progress.
Learning hint
Remembering French words and phrases gets easier if you incorporate them
into your everyday life. So, when you’re out walking or driving by yourself,
talk through your journey in French as you go, using à droite, à gauche
and tout droit and naming some landmarks. Ideally this should be out loud
– although it may not always be possible! Then you could practise directing
someone in French to six different destinations in your home town.
