Je voudrais louer un vélo
Hiring sporting equipment is more common than ever in France as many visitors opt for
activity holidays. Cheap flights have also given a boost to the car hire market. In Stage
4 of French Steps, Hakim’s conversation refers to the hiring of a mountain bike but the
activity outlined below, set in a water sports and leisure park, offers the chance to ask
about boats, bikes and mobile homes. The key expressions remain the same and the
information gap activity requires learners to check prices and thus gives welcome
revision of numbers.
Getting ready
Write up for all to see, Location de bateaux and invite suggestions as to what it
means. The word location is a common false-friend to speakers of English and often
needs explaining. Ask for suggestions of items that visitors might wish to hire.
Check that everyone has worked on the relevant French Steps dialogue and elicit the
expressions needed to ask about the period of hire: par heure, pour la demi-journée,
etc. Make sure that everyone is aware of the concept of une caution.
The activity on pages 2/3 requires learners to ask a partner various questions about hire
charges for different items in order to fill in the gaps on their tariff sheet. Half of the
group will need a copy of Version A. and half Version B.
Getting them talking
Learners work in pairs, explaining the item of interest and asking the price, where
necessary, to complete their pricelist. For example: Je voudrais louer un VTT s’il
vous plaît. C’est combien par heure? Their partner, who has that information, will
give the price, C’est 5€ par heure, Monsieur/Madame.
Likewise, Je voudrais louer un pédalo, c’est combien la caution s’il vous plaît?
C’est 50€ Monsieur/Madame.
Variation
If you have a larger group of students and a little more time, you could offer the same
activity in groups of 4. Give the sports information to 2 people and the campsite
information to 2 others in the same group. Each member of the group has to speak to
the other 3 to glean all the necessary prices.
