CanNASC Task Force Mission
• Our mission is to develop and implement a set of standardized
mannequin-based simulation scenarios that will be completed by
every trainee during residency.
» Rare, but important clinical situations that may not even be
seen, let alone experienced in a finite residency.
» Clinical scenarios that are critical to competency as an
anesthesiologist.
• All scenarios will have learning objectives grounded in the
National Curriculum for Canadian Anesthesia Residency.

CanNASC Work Plan
Needs assessment (2013)
We created, distributed nationally and analyzed a needs assessment
survey regarding simulation scenario content.
National simulation activity (2013)
We accounted for resources and current curriculum in each institution’s
simulation center.
Curriculum content (2013)
We achieved consensus on a set of scenarios regarding both important
and technically feasible scenario content to be included in the curriculum.

Standardized scenario template (2013)
We developed a standardized template for the delivery of simulation
based education activities.
Creation of scenarios (2014)
We created the first scenario using the standardized template document.
The entire Task Force will approve each final scenario (CanNASC
Simulation Milestone).
Assessment rubric (2014)
We agreed upon the Managing Emergencies in Pediatric Anesthesia
(MEPA) GRS as our primary assessment tool, to be informed by a
scenario-specific checklist & the Anesthesia Non-Technical Skills (ANTS)
GRS.

MEPA GRS
Please rate the overall performance in this simulation scenario from 1 to 6.
Scores of 1–3 are ‘unsatisfactory’ for an anesthesiologist in independent practice and would
constitute a failing performance in a high stakes examination such as the Royal College exam.
Scores of 4–6 are ‘satisfactory’ for an anesthesiologist in independent practice.

National Rollout (Academic year 2014-2015)
We will begin with one scenario at all 17 institutions. We established
scenario implementation guidelines and rater training videos, guide &
commentary.
Concurrent Scenario Development (2014)
We are now in the process of concurrently developing 4 additional
scenarios & scenario-specific checklists.
