As young children, Lyna Hart and Glen Anaquod were taken
from their homes and placed in church-run boarding schools.
The trauma of this experience was made worse by years of
untold physical, sexual and emotional abuse, the effects of
which persist in their adult lives. In this emotional film, the
profound impact of the Canadian government’s residential
school system is conveyed unflinchingly through the eyes of
two children who were forced to face hardships beyond their
years. We Were Children gives voice to a national tragedy and
demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit.
Très jeunes, Lyna Hart et Glen Anaquod sont retirés de leur
foyer et placés dans des pensionnats dirigés par le clergé. Au
traumatisme de cette expérience s’ajoutent des années de
violence physique, sexuelle et psychologique vécue dans le
secret, et dont les conséquences marquent encore leur vie
d’adultes. Ce film émouvant lève le voile sur le douloureux
héritage du système des pensionnats du gouvernement
canadien, qu’évoquent avec courage deux enfants soumis
bien avant l’heure aux vicissitudes de la vie. Nous n’étions
que des enfants... se penche sur une tragédie nationale et
témoigne de l’incroyable résilience de l’esprit humain.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Timothy Wolochatiuk is an award-winning writer, director
and producer whose projects include Impact of Terror (2005),
produced for CBC Witness and CNN Presents and broadcast
in over 200 countries. In 2007, Wolochatiuk was at the helm
of the feature-length docudrama Jonestown: Paradise Lost,
which was nominated for Best Documentary in 2007 by the
Canadian Film and Television Production Association and
was also nominated for a Grierson Award at the 2007 British
Documentary Awards. In 2010, his company, in partnership
with Entertainment One, completed History Television’s
landmark docudrama Storming Juno. He was the executive
producer and director of this feature-length special.

Impact of Terror (2005), produit pour CBC Witness et CNN
Presents et diffusé dans plus de 200 pays. En 2007, Tim
Wolochatiuk est à la barre du docudrame Jonestown: Paradise
Lost, long métrage sélectionné dans la catégorie Meilleur
documentaire 2007 par l’Association canadienne de production
de films et de télévision, et retenu pour un prix Grierson aux
British Documentary Awards 2007. En 2010, son entreprise, en
partenariat avec Entertainment One, termine Storming Juno, un
docudrame phare de la chaîne télévisée réservée à l’histoire. Tim
Wolochatiuk assure d’ailleurs la production et la réalisation de
cette émission spéciale long métrage.
