SAINT PATRICK`S DAY
SAINT PATRICK’S DAY
Saint Patrick’s real name was Succat . He was born in Britain in
387AD, but his grandmother was French.
First, Irish pirates kidnapped him when he was 16 years old.
After, the Irish pirates sold Succat as a slave so he was a
prisoner and worked for pirates. He lived in a cage for years. In
411, Succat escaped from the pirates and decided to go to
France because he wanted to be a priest. In 432, Succat
decided to come back to Ireland and he started to evangelize
Ireland. Succat started to teach people and to build churches.
At Cashel, Succat explained the Holy Trinity (the 3 elements of
Christianity : Father-Son-Holy Spirit ) with a small green plant
because this plant has three leaves. It is called the shamrock
and it is the symbol of Ireland. Then, the legend says Saint Patrick destroyed all the snakes or reptiles in
Ireland. Finally, he died in Downpatrick, Ireland on March 17th in 461.
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland and in the United-States. Many American people have
ancestors in Ireland because their great-grand fathers immigrated to America a long time ago ! Ireland is
also called « The Emerald Isle » so on St Patrick’s Day everybody wears green.
