Tourism in St Lucia
St Lucia's new Minister of Tourism, Mr. Pierre, arrived in London last week to try to
persuade charter airlines and British Airways to raise the frequency of their flights to
the Caribbean island. There was a 10 per cent increase in visitors to St Lucia from
the UK in the first six months of this year compared with 1996, and we think there is
room for more growth, but we need more flights. Of the 128,760 visitors to St Lucia
last year, 27,237 were from the UK, making this the island's second largest market
after the United States.' Mr Pierre says.
Faced with a potential collapse of its agriculture-based economy, St Lucia is
determined to replace its threatened banana industry with tourism. The island wants
tourism to replace agriculture as its largest industry by 2002 because in 2002 all
Caribbean islands will have to sell their agricultural produce on the open market.
Mr Pierre thinks that St Lucia, a small island, won't be able to compete with countries
such as Costa Rica. Instead of bananas, St Lucia now wants to sell holidays.
Of St Lucia's 150,000 inhabitants, 20,000 are employed in banana-growing, // while
just 11,000 are employed in tourism.
Mr Pierre wants the population of St Lucia to
understand the benefits of tourism
and he tries to persuade those working in
agriculture to grow produce for the tourism industry.//
The number of hotel rooms in St Lucia will increase over the next five years from
3,000 to 7,000. // Projects already announced include the opening in 1998 of a new
seaside resort and two new hotels // which are going to be built in the north of the
island.
