Once in a while, a vintage comes along that totally blows us away… and 2010 is looking a likely candidate! Our summer optimism was confirmed at the very start of September. The 2010 vintage is once again showing remarkable potential, nonetheless achieved in somewhat different conditions to 2009. A challenging spring, with some difficulties experienced during flowering, particularly in the older Merlot vines, ideal summer weather conditions with regular sunshine in just the right amounts, good day and night temperature variation and slow ripening, all played an important part in promoting freshness, aromatic complexity and phenolic richness. We waited until the end of September to get the harvest underway; patience was once more a significant advantage in optimising the potential quality of the harvest. There is no doubt that once again we have an absolute gem of a vintage in our cellars. I have total confidence in Guillaume Pouthier, Frédéric Bonnaffous and their teams to nurture and guide this magnificent vintage right through to bottling. My only regret, without question, is that the difficult conditions at the beginning of June deprived us of volumes of wine of such incredible quality. The very cool winter temperatures lasting through to the beginning of spring led to delayed growth in the vegetation during the first fortnight in April. Budburst is both promising and very consistent. the cool night temperatures allowed the vine to recuperate. Pronounced day and night temperature variation promoted steady ripening, while preserving the natural acidity in the grapes. May and June, cool and humid, dictated evenly spread flowering, which depending on the region, was quite inconsistent. Significant coulure affecting the mature Merlot vines in certain vineyards slightly reduced the potential of the harvest. Thankfully, there was no significant incidence of hail, with the exception of certain areas in Saint-Estèphe. A dry, cool and sunny September with rainfall just when it mattered. Ripening continued, slowly and consistently, while the day and night temperature variations promoted aromatic concentration and remarkable acidity. The excellent balance of phenolic concentration, high acidity and high sugars signal a vintage with remarkable ageing potential. July and August were particularly favourable. Superb sunshine, yet avoiding excessive temperatures, made it possible to make up some of the delay incurred in June. Despite it being the driest summer on record of the decade, adapted methods in the vineyards kept evapotranspiration to a minimum and More haste less speed, and once again, patience was a major virtue. Fine weather conditions at the end of September and October made it possible to wait for the optimum harvesting time for each grape variety. This vintage, where conditions were perfect across the board, is looking to be one of the truly great vintages! “ Throughout the year we adapted our techniques to best manage the water shortage faced during this vintage, which was the driest of the decade. We adopted a totally different approach to working the soil and the leaf canopy and vegetation, to allow the vine to cope during this very dry period. Volumes of Merlot grapes have unfortunately remained quite low, largely due to significant coulure and smaller sized berries than usual. From July to September, the sunshine and cool night temperatures were valuable allies, permitting slow ripening and causing exceptional concentration of aromas and phenolic compounds. » We have never before enjoyed tasting the grapes on the vine so much, and then again during vinification. The quality of this vintage is undeniable.” » Guillaume Pouthier “Mother nature and the climate were very good to us in 2010. Recorded precipitation levels, that can be compared with 2005 or even 2009, resulted in the production of small berries from the very outset. The result is a natural concentration of tannins, anthocyanins, sugars and acidity. Fine weather and generous sunshine in summer limited the breakdown of natural acids in the grapes, and ensured excellent alcohol, concentration and acidity ratios, which is indispensable in achieving perfect balance in fine wine. The older Merlots display a magnificent colour. The Cabernet and Petit Verdot grapes, which benefited from a fabulous late autumn, are simply glorious! It was evident that potential levels of tannin would be high this year, and we were extremely vigilant controlling the extractions and maintaining the aromatic complexity, richness and elegance promised by these beautiful grapes. If we were to sum up the vintage, I would say that 2010 combines the finesse and classic style of 2001 with the concentration of 2009 – without doubt THE vintage for keeping from the beginning of this century.” » “After frosts in 2008 and hail in 2009, La Garde can once again resume activity with a year devoid of climatic incidents. This is a VERY good vintage for the white wines, similar to 2001 and 2007. We decided not to use pellicular maceration and to reduce the proportion of new oak, to retain the purity and elegance of the wines, and essentially the acidity in the superb Sauvignon Blanc. With the reds, we have taken our approach to a new level, selective “a la carte” harvesting, avoiding pressing and pumping, vinifying whole berries or even whole bunches (a first for La Garde) for optimised fruit concentration, and gentle extraction by regular punching. The perfect ripeness of the skins allowed the constituent elements to naturally diffuse through to the juices. The barrels were also chosen with extreme care, to achieve an integrated oak character in keeping with the delectable finesse achieved in the superb La Garde vintage.” » “Given the significant water shortage this vintage, we adopted a different approach working the soil and the canopy. We are also fortunate to have very mature vines, which react well to lack of rainfall. Thankfully, the summer was very hot, without being a heatwave, with pronounced day and night temperature variations, which is extremely favourable to slow ripening. The vineyard did not suffer any adverse effects and the very fine weather in September lulled the grapes to reach new quality standards never witnessed to date! Extremely favourable weather up until October allowed the luxury of selective harvesting on a micro-parcel basis, spread out over a 4-week period. » “The weather this year, which was temperamental at Le Boscq, presented some cause for concern, notably a serious bout of hail in June, which significantly reduced harvest volumes, followed by an extremely dry, sunny and temperate summer, resulting in disparities in ripeness between the different vineyard parcels. We had to work even harder to adapt our work in the vineyard to these unusual conditions, with each parcel treated individually according to its specific requirements. We harvested late, with an “à la carte”, selective approach, waiting calmly and patiently for the very best possible time to pick, largely facilitated by good weather in October. The grapes were small, yet concentrated and very aromatic, and were carefully vinified at low temperature, with controlled extraction. Transferred to barrel mid-January, the wines are already appearing delicate and elegant, very well-balanced and not dissimilar to the great 2001 vintage produced here at Le Boscq.” Toute l’élégance d’un grand Saint-Estèphe All the elegance of a great Saint-Estèphe Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac CHÂTEAU Grand Cru, saint-émilion Superficie / Surface area : 13,5 Ha Nature des sols / Type of soils Silico-graveleux avec argiles bleues en sous-sol Flinty-gravel with blue clay subsoil.
