The Demographic explosion of wild boar in Europe
The Demographic explosion of wild boar in Europe L’explosion demographique du sanglier en Europe Content of Presentation The Wild Boar, its increase in Europe and its nutrition Main causes of the demographic explosion of wild boar in Europe Artificial feeding Conclusions What can be done? Examples of Good Management Practices The Wild boar Le Sanglier Gregarious species, it lives within a social structure called "company“ but isolated individuals may still be observed. The activity of the wild boar is mainly nocturnal. Wild boar has great adaptability and high reproductive rate. From one year to another, the population may increase from 50 to 200%. His favorite food is acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts, then the corn kernels often eaten with artificial feeding. • Forest fruits such as acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts • Dry maize given as artificial feeding • Sunflower crops, roots, potatoes • Worms are an important part of his diet. Main causes of demographic explosion Causes principales de l’explosion démographique 1. Natural causes/ Des causes naturelles Climate change, and the increase of temperature have a direct impact on the wild boar over-population Le changement climatique et l’augmentation des températures moyennes ont un impact direct sur les populations de sangliers Main causes of demographic explosion Causes principales de l’explosion démographique 2. Human factors/ Facteurs humains • Modification of forestry habitat/ Modification de l’habitat forestier • • Development of new infrastructures and protected areas/ Apparition de nouvelles infrastructures et zones protégées Hunting practices/ Pratiques cynégétiques • Reduced hunting seasons/ Diminution des périodes de chasse • Changes in agricultural practices/ Evolution des pratiques agricoles • Intensive feeding/ Nourrissage intensif Development of agricultural practices The example of Wallonia Développement des pratiques agricoles L'exemple de la Wallonie Nombre de sanglier tué 10000 5000 16000 14000 12000 10000 8000 6000 4000 2000 0 70 Series1 Années 19 80 19 83 19 86 19 89 19 92 19 95 19 98 20 01 20 04 20 07 0 Années ha en milliers Series1 Superficie ( en Ha) 20000 19 96 19 98 20 00 20 02 20 04 20 06 20 08 20 10 Sangliers tués 25000 60 50 Series1 40 30 19 80 19 8 19 4 8 19 8 92 19 9 20 6 0 20 0 04 20 08 30000 15000 Emblavement maïs Wallonie Emblavement Colza années Correlation between the appearance of so-called high culture in the Walloon Region and the quantitative development of the boar. A refuge during the entire year Un refuge tout au long de l’année Wild boars find in the crops: safety, tranquility and availability of food during a long part of the year Les sangliers vont trouver du refuge et de la quiétude ainsi qu’une abondance de nourriture dans les cultures Maïs Colza Céréales de printemps Moutarde Jan Fev Mar Avr Mai Jui Juil Aou Sep Oct Nov Dec What is artificial feeding? Qu’est-ce que le nourrissage artificiel? The feeding deterrent is used on specific periods during the years, usually in the forest to avoid crop damages. Intensive feeding is another form that consists in the distribution of large quantities of maize throughout the whole year, (more than what is needed to cover the animals’ energy requirements). Le nourrissage dissuasif consiste à occuper pendant des périodes bien définies à chercher de la nourriture, en général en forêt, pour éviter les dégâts dans les cultures. Il existe également le nourrissage dit intensif qui consiste à distribuer du maïs pendant toute l’année et en grande quantité (plus que c’ est nécessaire pour couvrir les besoins énergétiques de l'animal). What kind of practices for feeding? Quelle pratique pour le nourrissage ? • • Artificial feeding, if well practiced becomes useful to prevent the dispersion of those populations on the agricultural crops. A good practice of artificial feeding can be helpful to count the number of wild boars present (especially in the forest) and to control their population. • Un nourrissage dissuasif efficace peut être un outil pour empêcher la dispersion des populations de sangliers dans les cultures agricoles. • Une bonne pratique du nourrissage peut se révéler utile pour pouvoir compter ainsi que pour pouvoir contrôler les populations (surtout dans la foret). The influence of artificial wild boar feeding on fertility L’influence du nourrissage artificiel sur la fécondité A high production of forest fruits has a major impact on the fertility rate of wild boar females 158% vs 121% with the artificial feeding only with maize. Une surproduction de fruits forestiers a un impact majeur sur le taux de reproduction des femelles (158%) contre les 121% que peut avoir le maïs en période de rareté de fruits forestiers. If the corn from the feeding or crops can satisfy the energy requirements of young females, it does not give them the necessary animal protein for them to grow. Si le maïs du nourrissage ou des cultures satisfait bien les besoins énergétiques des jeunes femelles, il ne leur apporte pas les protéines animales nécessaires à leur croissance. Prohibiting feeding : a solution ? L’interdiction du nourrissage: une solution? • • • • • • The Vosges case study shows us that stopping feeding doesn’t have a significant influence on the wild boar population, but actually increases the damages on crops Stopping feeding without extending the hunting period doesn’t reduce the increase in population The cost of the prohibition in some cases will be unsustainable for the farmers and hunters Le cas d’étude des Vosges nous montre qu’une interdiction du nourrissage n’a aucune influence sur la limitation des populations de sangliers, sauf celle d’augmenter les dégâts dans les cultures Un arrêt du nourrissage, sans une augmentation des périodes de chasse en battue ne réussira pas à diminuer le nombre de ces populations Le coût d’un arrêt total du nourrissage peut dans certains cas entraîner des pertes économiques importantes pour les agriculteurs et les chasseurs Prohibition of feeding in the EU Interdiction du nourrissage dans l’UE Feeding No No No Yes Yes Yes Yes Austria, Germany and Luxembourg have decided to prohibit wild boar feeding (more than 1kg of maize for hunting place); but they extented the hunting seasons. France, Italy, Spain and Wallonia (Belgium) are allowing this practice but only with the objective to preserve the crops . L’Allemagne, l’Autriche et le Luxembourg ont décidé d’interdire tout forme de nourrissage ( à part 1 kg de maïs autorisé pour la chasse à l’affut), mais il ont mis en œuvre une politique d’ouverture des périodes de chasse. France, Italie, Wallonie (Belgique) et Espagne autorisent cette pratique mais avec l’objectif d’empêcher les dégâts dans les cultures agricoles. The Economical impact of the wild boar explosion Le coût économique de l’explosion démographique du sanglier • • • • The damage caused by wild boar in the fields are estimated around 25 million euro only for France • There is a major sanitary issue (Brucellosis, swine flue etc.) The related Increment of road accidents, with an estimated cost of 20-30 millions only for • France Les dégâts causés par les sangliers dans les cultures sont estimés à 25 million € seulement en France. Une tentation d’évaluation, Faune sauvage février 2008 Conclusions • • • • • • It becomes more and more important to reduce wild boar population in the different European countries Wild boar feeding can be used to preserve the crops and also to permit an easier control of those populations Increase hunting periods is also needed Better space management = Guarantee areas of tranquility in the forest for those populations Support collaboration between hunters and farmers Encourage farmers to seed those crops like maize or rapeseed far away from the forest borders. What can be done? Qu est qu´on peut faire? Examples of Good Management Practices Bonnes pratiques de gestion The German example L’exemple de l’Allemagne • • • • Hunters and Farmers are working together with the objective to reduce the impact of wild boar population in the crops. They are doing different tests to find the best way to avoid the migration of wild boars from the forest to the crops. “Peace in the forest, fire on the fields”. En Allemagne les agriculteurs et chasseurs collaborent afin de trouver une solution pour réduire les populations de sangliers. Les représentants du milieu rural essaient différentes méthodes pour éviter que les sangliers se déplacent des forêts aux cultures. Ils ont mis en place une politique de paix en forêt et feu sur les cultures The European Example The Wildlife Estates LABEL Objectives • Reward best examples of land and biodiversity management • Create a database of useful information to communicate to policy makers • Show that land mangers can be solution providers and thus avoid unnecessary regulations • Improve the image of hunters and landowners • Encourage social and economic development of rural communities • Create a European wide network in order to establish synergies, share experiences and business opportunities Goal « Wildlife Estates » is awarding a label which identifies and rewards those estates which offer the best examples of land management, wildlife management, and biodiversity conservation. + « Wildlife Estates » provides land managers with a tool to gain support for what they do and recognition for sustainable land management. WE act for biodiversity What is the label Wildlife Estates? Practical : supporting good management techniques and promoting the development of synergies across Europe. Communication : promoting good land managers practices and especially sustainable hunting & fishing towards the public and political authorities. Political : giving land managers the possibility to influence and to adapt the implementation of national and EU policies through strong lobbying: - Natura 2000, - the EU biodiversity strategy for 2020, - the CAP post 2013. Why a LABEL? The Label is not a binding certification The Label is flexible and reproducible The label is supported by the EU DG ENVIRONMENT A Label is easy to identify for people and media, allowing to better voice your opinions directly at EU and national level To achieve the « WE Label »: The estate/territory must complete the following 2 levels of assessment: Level I: Agree to follow ‘The Charter’ with 10 Commitments Level II: Complete the ‘Questionnaire and Evaluation Grid’ and auditing The WE-Charter (Level 1) To To obtain obtain the the label, label, aa territory territory or or an an estate estate must must fulfill fulfill aa set set of of generic generic and and specific specific criteria. criteria. Labelling process 7. Each 5 years new audit to note the continuous improvement of the property 6. Official Labeling of the property E 1. Contact with Landowners and explanation of objectives D C 2. Applicant signing Charter WE Secretariat A B 5. Visiting the property and audit 4. Support the applicant for completing administrative and technical documents 3. Applicant Signing Contract and paying fee for labeling A: To send the signed charter B: To complete the web questionnaire on the territory To send charter, questionnaire, fee (or a part of fee) and evaluation grid to the European Secretariat. C: To receive boards and official label certificate. D: To communicate about the continuous improvement done on the territory and updating of the label. E: To increase the WE network with communication tools (boards, website, media communication…) A strong European Network A The network relies on National Liaison Offices in most EU countries. Example: for France, the ONCFS is in charge of receiving and evaluating candidates. Each country has its own organization or group of organizations For example: 400 000 labeled ha en Europe About 60% estimated to be Natura 2000 sites Metsähallitus: Finnish State body SRPBA : Scottish Association of Private Landowners A network of Knowledge and competence • 2 plenary sessions each year • Several working groups • A Scientific Committee – University of Madrid – University of Vienna • An International Steering Committee Communication www.wildlife-estates.eu Positive effect on wildlife management • The goal of the WE label a balanced population according to the specific on-site conditions; • The WE label helps identify best management practices favoring biodiversity; • Regular meetings and debates to encourage knowledgesharing (steering committees and plenary sessions); • Establishment of a Scientific Committee and working groups (i.e. on the ¨wild boar issue¨, Chambord, Sept. 2012).
