Artist
Thierry Cohen
Born in 1963, Thierry Cohen has been working as photographer since 1985
and was one of the first in France to focus on digital technologies applied to
photography. As a portraitist, he worked for major record companies and for
the press, photographing personalities from the arts and entertainment. Since
2006, he chose to devote himself primarily to his personal work. Official
Selection for the Month of Photography in Paris in 2012, his Darkened
Cities series offers the contemplation of modern urban landscapes, under an
impossible starry sky. Thierry Cohen traveled in the deserts of Asia, South
America or Africa to photograph the sky matching the coordinates of these
capitals. In his photographs, he creates the aspect that megacities could have
if these did not generate light pollution which forbids to see the stars. Beyond
the spectacular magic of his pictures, Thierry Cohen uses the possibilities of
digital photography to question the future of cities, energy consumption of
Western societies and the place of man in his environment.
