This fort of the type «Séré de Rivières», occupied by the Germans in 1914 and liberated by the British in October 1918, is the

The Provincial domain is the green lung
of the city and region and also the largest
recreational area in the region of the Lys.
The circumference of the pond of 64 ha
invites hikers, cyclists and horseriders. On
the water, you can enjoy sailing, surfing and
kayaking.
In the ‘Maison du Parc”, the “forest station”
reveals all the secrets of the surrounding
forest through and an amazingly entertaining show trail. Continue by a subsequent
discovery of the woods along one of the
marked trails or along the walkway in the

One of the most touching cemeteries in the
Lys Region is without a doubt the Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof situated between
Menin and Wevelgem. Almost 48000 German soldiers are buried here which makes
it the largest German military cemetery in
Western Europe. The cemetery with the octagonal commemorative chapel is a haven
of peace and contemplation.
Located in the remains of a 19th century
military fort used as an execution place by
the Nazis in 1943 and 1944. By means of
reconstructed scenes, objects, documents
and four thematic areas, The Resistance
Museum shows individual journeys of people who dared to oppose the Nazi occupiers.

the “trail of the strange”, a family hiking tour

Eurometropole has a dense railway network with frequent connections
between major cities. Direct connections between the centers of Lille, Tournai and Kortrijk take no more than 20 minutes! From these hubs the whole
Eurometropolis can reached by train or by bus.
The subway and tram of Lille serve the entire urban agglomeration on the
French side and enable many excursions: Combine a visit to Lille with that
to other cultural centers such as «La Piscine» in Roubaix or the LaM in
Villeneuve d’Ascq.
The Provincial domain ‘De Baliekouter’ is 44
hectares large with about 16 ha of woods
and vast plains to wonder about. You can
find grasslands with pollard willows, flowery
meadows, the Valley of the Mandel river and
an open farming landscape.

Along the Dorpsstraat in Machelen, you can
find one of the two French national military
cemeteries in Flanders. The municipality of
Zulte was hit hard during both world wars.
In Machelen alone, about 600 French soldiers were killed. This cemetery is the final
resting-place of 1325 soldiers.

Tourcoing
The cities of Lille and Roubaix united
around a common goal: developing textile
design. They do so by offering services
and places to young talent, thus hoping to
stimulate the revival of both textile activity
and the two neighborhoods.
The cemetery is the smallest American
cemetery in Europe and in Belgium that
dates back to the First World War. In a park
of 2 ha, there are 368 tombstones in Carrara marble. Each year, on Memorial Day,
a commemorative ceremony celebrates
the memory of US victims of war.
The nearly 10 acre open air museum immerses you in the richness and diversity of
rural architecture of the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries. Between the forge, the houses,
the “café” and the bakery, you will discover
the vegetable garden, the herb garden, the
orchard, some pets, ...

The hospitable Eurometropolis is the region of the “ducasses”, traditional festivals of the towns and villages. The “ducasse” of Ath, known for its giants
parade, was added to the oral and immaterial world heritage of UNESCO: It
takes place around the fourth Sunday of August each year, since more than
five centuries.

The Saint Elisabeth beguinage (13th century) reflects the particular social
organization of autonomous religious women, beguines. The remarkably preserved site has 41 houses.

The 1st Tourist Map of the Eurometropolis Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai is an invitation to discover a transnational area around the French agglomeration
of Lille, the region of Wallonie picarde and the Southern part of the West
Flanders Province. This map brings together the tourist topics of three
regions: the French agglomeration of Lille, the Walloon region of Tournai
and the Flemish region of Kortrijk. Each one of these regions has valuable tourist sites to offer. The real added value and particularity of this
map lies in the transnational aspect: the area covers three regions, two
countries, two languages, three cultures. In addition, it has the merit to
summon up the strength of every part and to give an overview of the
tourist sites not to be missed.

Kortrijk is an active center in the Lys valley, with important cultural, historical, and commercial assets. Kortrijk is not only the precious medieval
town of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, but also a city where innovation,
creativity and design are at the forefront. The cultural-historical heart of
the city is the living witness of a rich past, which can still be experienced
at the Museum Kortrijk 1302, the Broel Museum and Flax Museum. The
city has undergone a real transformation. The river Lys got a contemporary look with seven new bridges. The new “K” shopping centre and the
shopping streets make shopping in the heart of the pleasant town fun.

From Lille's rich history as an industrial and commercial
city, an exceptional heritage remained. Proud of its history,
the city looks towards the future with equal determination.
While Euralille is an example of bold architecture, the south
of Lille became the "Fashion District", since stylists have
established their shops in the neigbourhood. Stimulated by
lille3000, an event that focuses on contemporary creativity
and innovation, the city undergoes a metamorphosis. As
cultural capital of Europe in 2004, Lille became the benchmark in these domains. Culture and festivals are part of
everyday life, from museums to theater, from fair to festival.
DOORNIK
This beautiful city of Picardy, the cradle of French kings, in its history has
seen passing by big names: Clovis, Charles, Louis XIV ... Today the historic
heart of the city reflects this intense chronology. Follow the discovery trail,
from the Grand Place to the Scheldt quays, from the Museum of Fine Arts to
the Folklore Museum. The Notre-Dame cathedral in Tournai (Unesco world
heritage) shows a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic style. The
church is now being restored and that significant work is certainly worth a
visit. Don’t miss the fascinating guided tour of the edifice and its works !
At the Tourist Office you can follow a historical multimedia spectacle. Dare
you to climb the 257 steps of the belfry and enjoy an extraordinary panorama
of the city. And as the inhabitants do: enjoy a glass or a delicious waffle in the
shadow of the five bell towers of the cathedral!
