In listening, I would agree that Magda has a very interesting voice.
The Blues Travelling album has attractive, spare production quality
with lots of space in it. I like her simple but effective guitar playing,
and the fiddle is very good. I also like she plays with the melodies, like
in "Wild Women".

This Polish female singer and guitarist caused quite a stir with her well-received live
recording released in 2008. This CD is the predecessor of that set, and it is equally
satisfying. There is a jazzy edge to Magda’s singing and arrangements here; the Polish-born,
long-time American resident jazz violinist Michal Urbaniak makes a hefty and individual
contribution to this set, and saxophonist Arkadiusz Osenkowski also supplies some meaty
playing to the refreshingly different and thoughtful line-ups. The material ranges from the
classic vaudeville blues, Delta blues (Tommy Johnson’s ‘Canned Heat’) and traditional guitar
evangelist numbers to compositions by Quincy Jones, Doc Pomus (‘Lonely Avenue’, one of
Ray Charles’ hits), Eric Bibb and Sonny Boy Williamson - but Magda has the kind of voice
and musical imagination that makes this CD coherent and very listenable.

Some songs have only two musicians: Piskorczyk on acoustic guitar, often playing more
single notes than chords, with either an electric fiddle or sax noodling over the top.
Sometimes, light percussion is added.
On Sonny Boy Williamson’s ‘Help Me’, Piskorczyk opens with a standard blues progression,
single notes on the bass string. The fiddle joins in, at first pizzicato - plucked rather than
bowed - before soaring over the bass like a bird over a valley. It’s new yet deeply traditional.
‘Darkness On The Delta’, is sparse, old-timey acoustic blues, relaxed and melodic. During a
break, whistling over the thump of the double bass creates a delightful mix of textures.

Jeune Polonaise venue a la musique par l’apprentissage du chant, Magda Piskorczyk fera
de brillantes études universitaires avant de devenir définitivement artiste … Passée du
blues-rock de ses débuts a un registre plus rhythm’n’blues, soul et meme gospel, la
longiligne guitariste sortira un premier album en 2002 et commencera a écumer
systématiquement les salles et les festivals polonais avant d’etre remarquée au-dela de ses
frontieres et notamment aux Etats Unis ou elle participera a l’International Blues Challenge
de Memphis en 2006. Accompagnée de quelques musiciens parmi lesquels on retrouve
régulierement Arkadiusz Osenkowski au saxophone ténor, Adam Wojdak aux percussions et
Michal Urbaniak au violon, Magda Piskorczyk livrait il y a un an un second album fait de
superbes reprises mettant au mieux en valeur une voix particulierement intéressante !
Véritable voyage a travers le Sud des Etats Unis, « Blues Travelling » part de Memphis pour
se rendre a Vicksburg et longe le Mississippi avec quelques splendides étapes dans les
répertoires de Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Bill Broonzy, Tom Waits ou Eric Bibb mais aussi
dans nombre de morceaux élevés au rang de standards au fil des ans. Charmant l’auditeur
de bout en bout avec un timbre rocailleux et sensuel a la fois qui évoque plus souvent qu’a
son tour les meilleures chanteuses noires, Magda la blanche nous présente une heure de
bonne musique particulierement méticuleuse au niveau des arrangements et nous fait
succomber avec des pieces d’orfevrerie comme « Lonely Avenue », « I’d Rather Go Blind »,
« I Want Jesus To Talk With Me » ou encore cette adaptation aussi simpliste qu’attachante
du « Work Song » jadis magnifié par le regretté Claude Nougaro en un tout aussi formidable
« Sing Sing Song » ! Capable de conjuguer une incroyable énergie et une maîtrise parfaite
des émotions qu’elle souhaite faire passer a son public, Magda Piskorczyk s’avere etre une
véritable artiste polyvalente capable de s’adapter a toutes les situations et de poser son pas
dans celui de ses illustres prédécesseurs, ajustant généralement l’empreinte de ces derniers
pour la remodeler et la faire devenir sienne. C’est simple comme un bon vieux blues du delta
et pourtant ça vient d’ailleurs, du Sud Ouest de la Pologne plus précisément …

Magda Piskorczyk - Blues Travelling
Schon zwei Mal hat Magda Piskorczyk Polen bei der International Blues Challenge in
Memphis vertreten und dort die Kritiker positiv überrascht. 2007 erschien ihr erstes
Studioalbum Blues Travelling mit Songs zwischen dem Mississippi-Delta und Doc Pomus.
Man sollte sich niemals sicher sein, die Magie dieses Albums erfasst zu haben. Natürlich ist
da in jedem Song diese tiefe und zutiefst warme Stimme. Wenn es nicht so ein übles
Klischee wäre, könnte man die Kollegen zitieren, die natürlich von einer schwarzen Stimme
in einer weißen Frau schreiben. Nein: das ist nicht nötig. Wir hören einfach die Stimme einer
Frau, die den Blues wirklich im Herzen verstanden hat und nicht nur die Lehrbücher
nachbetet. Klar - auch die Gitarre von Magda Piskorczyk trägt jedes Lied. Doch wie sich die
Sängerin den klassischen Blues- und Popthemen neu annähert, das ist immer wieder
überraschend. Da gibt es zum klassischen Bluessound plötzlich die Jazzgeige von Michal
Urbaniak. Oder aus Cannonball Adderleys "Work Song" wird fast rituell beschwörend mit
Saxophon und sparsamer Percussion zurück auf die Baustellen der Südstaaten zurück
geschickt und klingt letztlich wie eine Klage des ganzen afrikanischen Kontinents. Und Etta
James' "I'd rather go blind" wird so ganz ohne für den Song unnötigen Schmalz serviert und
erscheint fast minimalistisch mit seinen hypnotischen Gitarrenphrasen und dem klagenden
Saxophoneinwürfen.
"Blues Travelling" ist ein Album, das natürllich nicht mehr den aktuellen Entwicklungsstand
der Künstlerin widerspiegelt. Heute setzt sie ihre Blues-Ausflüge auch schon in
weltmusikalische Regionen fort und lässt durchaus auch elektrische Gitarren die Sounds
erweitern. Das kann man auf zwei Live-Alben aus den letzten Jahren nachvollziehen.

Astonishing voice, immaculate song selection, great arrangements

I was attracted to the CD as it featured Michal Urbaniak (I'm a fan) and the fact that it was all
blues and jazz standards. The arrangements are wonderful, highlights particularly being the
stripped down Work Song, Lonely Avenue and the chilling Nothing Like You Used To Do. But
the whole album is of real quality - and of course - what a voice.
