Daniel Caron is Legal Counsel for the Office of the Privacy

Daniel Caron is Legal Counsel for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada in Ottawa.
Daniel provides the Office with strategic and legal advice on a number of privacy related issues,
and offers guidance with respect to the interpretation and application of the various provisions of
Canada's two federal privacy statutes. Daniel regularly represents the Commissioner before
Courts at various levels, and regularly interacts with stakeholders, international counterparts,
organizations, students and members of the public on a host of privacy issues. Daniel has a
particular interest in international privacy issues and information technology. In 2009, Daniel
participated in a three month fellowship program working alongside attorneys from the Bureau
of Consumer Protection of the United States Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., in
order to get a unique sense of how consumer privacy is protected in the United States. Prior to
joining the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Daniel articled at a national law firm in Ottawa.
He studied the common law in French at the Université de Moncton, and holds a degree in
Political Sciences from the University of Calgary.

Ottawa. Daniel offre des conseils juridiques et stratégiques au Commissariat sur une gamme
d’enjeux liés à la protection des renseignements personnels au Canada et à l'échelon
international. Il guide le Commissariat sur les questions d’interprétation et d’application des
deux lois fédérales en matière de protection des renseignements personnels. Daniel représente
régulièrement le Commissariat devant divers tribunaux juridiques, et interagit auprès de
nombreux intervenants, de contreparties internationales, d’organisations, d’étudiants et du grand
public pour ce qui est de questions liées à la protection de la vie privée. Daniel a un intérêt
particulier pour les questions de vie privée d’envergure internationale et pour celles liées aux
technologies de l’information. En 2009, Daniel a travaillé à titre d’invité international à la
Federal Trade Commission des États-Unis, à Washington (D.C.). Ce fut pour Daniel une
occasion de travailler au sein d’une équipe d’avocats dévoués à assurer la protection de la vie
privée des consommateurs et d’être un témoin privilégié de l’approche américaine en matière de
protection de la vie privée des consommateurs. Avant de se joindre aux services juridiques du
Commissariat, Daniel a fait un stage auprès d’un cabinet de droit national à Ottawa. Daniel a
étudié la common law en français à l’Université de Moncton, et détient un baccalauréat en
sciences politiques de l’Université de Calgary.
