Four dates with Kaija Saariaho
L'Amour de loin
The Théâtre du Châtelet proposes a concert version of this 5-act opera by the Finnish
composer, Kaija Saariaho. Written by the Lebanese author Amin Maalouf, the libretto takes its
inspiration from the life of the troubadour Jaufré Rude and transports us to the Mediterranean of
the 17th century, halfway between east and west, between fantasy and reality... With conductor
Kent Nagano.
Saturday, March 11 at 8pm, Théâtre du Châtelet
Près
With the idea that understanding a piece allows one to better hear it, this lunchtime repertory
workshop offers an educational exploration of Près, followed by the piece's performance by
Alexis Descharmes on cello. The title of this piece is taken from Saint-John Perse and is
dedicated to the cello player Anssi Karttunen.
Wednesday, March 22 from 12:30 to 1:30pm, Centre Pompidou
Amers, Je sens un deuxième coeur, Terrestre
On this evening's program, three pieces including Amers, those reference points that punctuate
the coastline and guide navigators, a second title also taken from a book by Saint-John Perse. Je sens un deuxième coeur is a
trio imagined just next to the opera Adriana Mater, as close to the world as the figures that reside in this opera whose premiere
is scheduled a few days later.
Monday, March 27 at 8:30pm, Opéra Bastille, amphitheater
Adriana Mater
World premier of an opera in seven scenes that, once more, brings together the work of Amin Maalouf
with that of Kaija Saariaho. Conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and produced by Peter Sellars, this
performance will be aired by France Musique.
March 30, April 3, 7, 10, 12, 15 et 18 at 8pm, Opéra Bastille
Nunes/Harvey
Does the prospect of an opera metamorphose a composer's writing? Emmanuel Nunes
harnesses the ideas of Goethe while Johathan Havey is fascinated by the link between Wagner
and Buddhism. Together, they bring to us elements of their opera in progress and their answer
to this question. The work created by Harvey with Jean-Claude Carrière will premiere in June
2007, directed by Pierre Audi. The premiere of the first theatrical piece by Nunes will take
shape on the stage of the Lisbon opera house in November 2006.
Saturday, March 25 at 8:30pm, Centre Pompidou
The Words of Alan Pauls Meet the Questions of Martin Matalon
Martin Matalon has just completed the composition of a radio piece for France Culture entitled Nocturnes. Texts written by Alan
Pauls were used for this creation. This Argentinean author, recently discovered in France, has written on the diaries of Kafka,
Barthes, Gombrowicz, and others. He brings about, with Nocturnes, a new step in the Traces cycle that Martin Matalon began in

2004. These pieces, written for a solo instrument and electronics, like a kind of "compositional" diary, fill up over the years.
La partion du ciel et de l'enfer by Philippe Manoury
The title of this piece, which constitutes the third piece of the Sonus ex machina series, makes
reference to an episode in Greco-Roman mythology during which Jupiter and his brother, Pluto,
divide the world between themselves. The former obtains the heavens, the latter, hell. Here, we
must also think of the word partition in the sense of the brothers' "territorial divide".
Wednesday, March 8, TNP, Biennale Musiques en scène, Villeurbanne
ON-IRON by Philippe Manoury
Three significant figures join forces to create a new form of "theatrical event": the composer
Philippe Manoury, the producer and stage designer Yannis Kokkos and Laurence Equilbey, the
director of the Accentus chorus. This composition immerses us in the exceptional sensory
dimension announced by the title - "onrion", which means daydream, close to a metaphysical
dream, in Greek.
Saturday, March 11, TNP, Biennale Musiques en scène, Villeurbanne
Tuesday, March 28, La Comédie, Clermont-Ferrand
En écho by Philippe Manoury
The musicians from the group Accroche Note bring us four pieces by Manoury including En écho, a piece that tests the
extraordinary polyphony of voices transformed in real time by a computer and using state of the art musical materials.
Monday, March 13, La Comédie, Clermont-Ferrand
Prologue by Gérard Grisey
Another date for Ircam with the Biennale Musiques en scène 2006, organized by Grame, this
concert begins with the piece Prologue by Gérard Grisey, one of today's top composers. The
viola is analyzed as a harmonic generator: "essentially melodic, Prologue pulls slowly away
from the gravity and the hypnosis of repetition". Also on the program, the works of Carlos
Grätzer and Pedro Amaral, former Ircam Cursus student.
Saturday, March 11, Chapelle de la Trinité, Lyon

IRCAM creates its Industrial Affiliate Program
Created in reaction to recent changes in French legislation in favor of patronage, the IRCAM
Industrial Affiliate Program has just welcomed its first member, Univers Son, a French company
that develops sound software and distributes hardware (audio and music, video and image,
sound and instruments) http://www.univers-sons.com. By becoming a member of the IRCAM
Industrial Affiliate Program, Univers Sons has access to the latest Ircam scientific developments
and innovations through encounters with the institute's researchers and composers. Numerous
advantages allow members to take advantage of the unique position of IRCAM within the
worlds of sound-technology and contemporary artistic creation.
IRCAM presents the hifi stereo system of tomorrow at
Musikmesse 2006
IRCAM coordinates the European project, SemanticHIFI, which centers on the creation of the
new generation of HIFI systems that will make it possible to navigate, listen, interact, play and
share music. Along with its partners, IRCAM will present a prototype of this software in
exclusivity during the international congress dedicated to musical instruments, computer
material and music software, musical publications and accessories. Musikmesse website:

Cycle of conferences on orchestration aids
A tool to assist orchestration (to better predict the result of a composition in order to discover
new possibilities) has long been a dream for numerous composers. Certain technology (search
engines, learning systems, descriptors, sound databases, etc.) has reached a stage where this
project is conceivable. During these sessions, the public will discover the development of this
exciting topic. Free entry.

Formalismes et modèles musicaux, in 2 volumes by André Riotte and Marcel Mesnage
The first issue of the Musique/Science collection in which 35 years of publications retracing the
approach of the composer and engineer André Riotte who investigated the foundations of
musical writing can be found. Once computer scientist and music lover, now musicologist,
Marcel Mesnage, also considers the work carried out since the end of the 1980's. The mutual
attraction of contemporary music for scientific ideas, these texts show the steps followed by the
authors in the creation of their methods for reconstructing musical scores through formal
models.
